Maven Center's philosophy is simple yet profound. Rehab meets fitness. The goal is not to rehabilitate you to your prior status quo. Rather, the goal is to rehabilitate you (through the physical therapy arm) and then encourage you to reach your fitness potential (through the fitness arm). Most physical therapists understand the theory, but I'm not sure most also understand (or, least, physically look like thy understand) the fitness part. Taylor and his team do, as evidenced by (among other things) Maven Center's renowned Maven Project program, a 1-month program focused on breaking bad habits/addictions and providing tools to recalibrate one's cognitive, physical and "spiritual" settings.
I initially stopped by Maven Center to receive treatment on my right forearm for tendinitis-like symptoms. (I was having trouble doing bicep curls.) The treatment was perfect. But then Taylor suggested I try the Maven Project program. I knew a few people who had gone through the program, which involves attending weekly group workouts, involving high-intensity exercises - utilizing both bodyweight and weights. Since I had been lifting for 10+ years at the time, I thought it would be a breeze. So I agreed and participated in the January 2016 program.
I was wrong. Everything I knew about training was turned on its head. The workouts focus on compound, functional movements, similar to CrossFit, but not with the heavy lifts or competitive environment. Because I had focused on the "vanity" parts of my body, I had neglected other crucial areas (e.g., core, shoulders, cardio, range of motion, flexibility). I may not be able to bench 315 anymore, but I can confidently say today (at 39 years of age), I am the fittest I've ever been and can at least keep up with, if not outrun, 25-year olds.
Here's the thing. You will see a lot of the reviews here reference the previous doctors (Jerry and Dave) who have moved on and are no longer there. But what you need to understand is that Maven Center (which encompasses both the clinical and fitness) is the brainchild of Taylor Lee, whose clinical and practical knowledge is second to none. He coached me during the Maven Project program and I learned a tremendous amount, but not only about fitness and science. I also learned how to be intentional, how to exercise grit, consistency and discipline.
In short, Maven Center is the preeminent clinic because the physical therapy practice is not only top-notch, but also real in substance. On the other side of the coin, Maven Center's fitness program is highly effective, as evidenced by the cult-like following the morning group workouts have attracted. Taylor and his team are not focused on billing your insurance companies. Rather, they are genuinely focused on helping people realize their true fitness potential.
This is not a perfect analogy, but being treated at and training at the Maven Center is like learning martial arts from Bruce Lee, who was a trailblazer/pioneer. If I had an opportunity to train with and learn from Bruce Lee or one of his students, I would choose Bruce. Wouldn't you?
Here's the website: www.mavencenter.com. If you're struggling with pain or interested in getting back into or raising your fitness game, I recommend you check it out. =).
