Begin in Millville, NJ to find Captain Dave
Jeff H.

The Maurice River in Down Jersey outside Philadelphia en route to the Jersey Cape is a true treasure.  Fortunately the US Department of the Interior also recognizes this and has granted parts of it scenic and wild protection status.  It is also full of nature and relatively devoid of human beings - except those present to enjoy its allures.  One way to get closer to this free flowing river into the vast Delaware Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean is to go on a boat ride with the legendary Captain Dave Scherer who has been guiding people down the river in his tour boat for decades.  The cruises are based out of Millville NJ - the principal city on the Maurice. It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon (or even an evening cruise.)  You are guaranteed to see Bald Eagles because you will.  Everyone is friendly on these trips and it is like you have entered a more peaceful and harmonious world.  Highly recommended!

Better-than-average diner food. Good coffee. Clean and comfortable. Few options in the area so all the more pleasant. Recommended.

So I realize that Yelp doesn't have a whole lot of reviews on fishing boats, but I though I'd share…read moremy experience anyway. Went fishing with my father, brother and girlfriend and had a great time. The only downside was getting up at 4:30 AM to get to the boat before it left port. From when we got there the captain and mates were incredibly helpful. Whether it was helping with fish, bait or just stopping by to make sure everything is going well. The fishing was pretty good too. We sat next to a really nice old man that was really the comic relief of the boat. You could tell that he had lived quite an interesting life. And besides, he was at the age where he just didn't give a crap. Really made the trip more fun. Would definitely use this boat again.

Even though it was 7:30am when the boat launched, my competitive self still heard that there was a…read morecompetition to see who could catch the biggest fish. I've only been fishing one other time (from the side of a stocked pond), but I was going to win that bounty. Captain Joe Sr. even confirmed it before we left to fish in the Delaware Bay. Well, I ended up with a 14" flounder and threw it back because it was out of flounder season and you need to catch those suckers when they are larger than 18" or something ridiculous like that. Needless to say, I didn't even have anything to compete with. Other than that, I just enjoyed watching the bf catch 3 good ones (which were amazingly delicious for dinner), his brother catch one that looked like it had wings (Super Mario Bros. was closer to reality than I ever realized), people watching the other fishermen on the boat, and the awesome crew that moved the boat when we weren't catching stuff, ran over to help get the big fish on the boat and fileted a beautiful piece.
