I have worked in many specialist bookshops over the years and am an avid book collector. When travelling i always set aside a day to visit the local bookshops wherever i may be.This week i travelled to Berlin, one of my favourite cities for finding interesting books.Armed with a map of all the Antiquarian bookshops and a list of titles which was specifically looking for for a project i set on on route.. On the advice of a bookshop owner I was told to visit Mattias Drummer as he may be able to help with my list as it was one of the areas his bookshop specialised in.I went to the counter, said hello and politely asked if i could show my list of books, to which the manbehind the counter quite aggressively said no. Slightly taken aback by this, i decided to look around the shop to see if i could find some titles myself, only to be followed around the shop. Eventually, spotting two books of interest in the cabinet beside the counter i decided to try again, hoping that things might go better the second time around. naming the titles of the books, i asked, again politely how much they cost? To which the owner replied aggressively in broken English, if i couldn't speak to him in German then he wouldn't give me the prices for the books. Completely shocked, I left but not before telling him that I thought he was incredibly rude. Yes it's true i don't speak German, but he did have enough of an understanding of English to understand what i was asking, and even if not, surely we could have struggled our way through with a pen, piece of paper and some awkward pointing.but he was having none of it. All a bit longwinded but to get to the point, on personal experience I would most definitely not recommend this bookshop, especially if you don't speak German no matter how basic your request may be.
There are plenty of other great bookshops worth visiting, Cassell & Lampe and Antiquariat Am Adenauerplatz which are close by to name a few. There is also a great free Antiquarian bookshop guide which you can pick up free in many bookshops. read more
