My coworker suggested this place because she absolutely loves the food. So we've visited a few times and had a great time. The restaurant was very cozy, clean and inviting. We've always had IMPECCABLE service any time we've dined at Matchbox. Servers are attentive, friendly and engaging. Shrimp and grits were were a bit lukewarm but despite that they were pretty flavorful. It was the only temperature issue for our entire meal. Crab and Guacamole dish was great with my favorite being the wood-fired bread. My only complaint with this dish is that it looked like they seasoned the bread with a dash of salt and pepper maybe but the guacamole desperately needed a pinch of salt as it was incredibly bland. Maryland Crab Dip is a happy hour special so it's not on the original menu. I wasn't a fan though as It had a more whipped, fluffy cheese consistency and it was a tad saltier than I'd like. The NY Strip steak was good but it wasn't particularly memorable. I did, however, get regular "smashed" potatoes as opposed to the sweet potato side that comes with it. The mashed potatoes had to have been my favorite item on the dish. It was light, creamy, and buttery. I was not disappointed with my choice. Bistro burger was absolutely delicious. I'm a big bread fanatic and they brushed a butter-like sauce on the inside and outside that just set it over the top for me. The burger was juicy and delicious. Mustard Glazed Salmon was cooked perfectly with each ingredient complementing the salmon. But for me, it was the crispy layer that really made the dish. The chicken pesto pizza had a nice buttery, garlic flavor which was enjoyable to eat. Matchbox Meat Pizza was good but didn't feel it was very different from ordering another Meatlovers-ish pizza from another restaurant. Q Special Pizza had to be our least favorite. It came with cremini mushrooms, red peppers, chicken and mozzarella but wes incredibly bland and didn't come out very warm unfortunately. The cornbread by itself is amazing but we decided to get some extra honey butter on the side and indulged a bit. I would definitely go back to try other dishes and maybe convince them to put the cornbread in an 8x8 pan instead! read more

Ordered a half veggie half cheese pizza for $23! The crust was too thin. There were so many vegetables on one side, the crust was soggy. It seemed like a 14 inch pizza which really wasn't sufficient for two people who hadn't eaten in seven hours. Get a Caesar's Pizza for $8 and save yourself some money. read more

I came on a quiet Sunday night and was put upstairs in a small 2 person booth where it felt isolated with not much to look at even though the general decor is modern and pretty. The farmer's soup was overtart, heavy on the tomatoes and lighter on the potatoes corn and carrot. The pesto sauce added did not impart much flavour behind the overall tartness of the soup. The roasted veggie pizza was delicious with some surprising heat in the form of fresno chiles. I was surprised to find out that the fresno chile was a New Mexico chile after looking it up on Wikipedia. I would come back for the pizza and skip the soup. read more

I don't know why I keep coming back. The service is abysmal and it's over priced (I know it's Pentagon City, but still!). Doesn't matter where you sit. The servers look at you and keep on walking or, if they're standing around, hide to avoid eye contact. The bussers seem pleasant though, oddly enough. Food is....typical for the area. It's ok. Sitting on the deck is really cool though. Lots of activity and most people won't sit out there because you get worse service! Not the best experience I'd say.... We walked in at 8:47 on a Tuesday night. We're not from here we're visiting from Texas so we didn't know they close at 8:30. Door was open we walk-in and from the way the front desk lady (what looked to be the manager) didn't even acknowledge us she just started speaking in a low voice to a waitress , again completely not even looking us in the eye. Which prompted us to ask is everything ok? Are you closed? She then says "we close at 8:30 but that's ok" We should've left right then and there... Food was great but that was pretty much it, service more than lacked. Probably because we came in late but still I mean if you're going to let us stay at least be attentive. Waiter only came 2 times, to take our order and to bring the food and when we were done he only asked if we needed anything, by then it was too late my kids had finished their sodas and didn't get refills as they were eating. My daughter needed an extra plate but he was never close so we could call him. My husband wanted another beer but he noticed they were cleaning the draft beer dispenser and waitwe basically just didn't seem thrilled to have us there. We saw him at the bar laughing and chatting with other employees so it's not that he was busy he just didn't care. We won't be back that is for sure. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! First... Anywhere that I can get a cauliflower-crust pizza is a staple for me. As a keto & low-carb enthusiast, its sooo important to me for restaurants to provide these options. The cauliflower crust is absolutely amazing, it doesn't taste like cardboard like most places, its actually pretty doughy. Also, the cream of crab soup is almost to die for. The pizza was so good! The service was fast too, this was really convenient because I was on my Washington trip and had a tight schedule.

I hate to do this but I have to give a one star review based on this visit. We went for my wife's birthday dinner (we'd both been sick with the plague that's going around DC too and were looking forward to finally getting out of the house) and as we were eating our Simple Salads she encountered a most unexpected and unwanted bonus in her salad, a dead bug. I know this happens and to be fair they were very apologetic and reasonably accommodating in that they didn't charge for the buggy salad, offered her a replacement one, and also didn't charge for our arancini risotto appetizer. The problem is after the bug incident I really didn't want to finish eating the rest of my salad and kinda lost my appetite. If this had happened in my salad I think I would've just called it a night, gotten my check, and eaten elsewhere. Other than the bug incident, the food was fine. The arancini risotto appetizer is really enjoyable but it's a bit expensive for three balls. I wasn't especially impressed with the spicy meatball pizza, It was okay but nothing really special although to be fair I'm not a big fan of meatballs, the white mushroom pizza is better. We got the cheesecake to go and that's worth trying as well. Service was very friendly and other than the bug my food was fine but since I kinda lost my appetite that's a little bit like well other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? I'll come back here and give them another try and hopefully be able to write a better review, especially since I live within walking distance. Matchbox at Pentagon City gets 5 stars from me for service alone. I came for a birthday brunch with 8 adults and 4 kids- any server's nightmare! The staff, however, was kind to us from the very start. They were so polite and professional and welcoming. There wasn't even a HINT of annoyance, even when one child spilled an entire glass of water, food all over the floor, and were generally loud. They also offered to split the check for us without even being asked which is so unusual and very considerate. They were generally upbeat and kind. They even provided plates and utensils for a cake rhat the birthday girl brought. This place is definitely kid friendly! I saw lots of children when we were there. There are two floors, so plenty of seating. Thank you to Matchbox for having the best servers in town! Side note- food was also delicious. Reasonably priced and super tasty. Came here for happy hour, and it was great food for great prices. My friend and I started with the short rib sliders...we almost cancelled our entrees and got the sliders two more times. You have to get them. They have the onion strings inside that are just amazing. I got the crispy chicken sandwich, Nashville hot, with fries for my entree. I wasn't super crazy about it. It wasn't that crispy/spicy, but my friend whose never had a Nashville style chicken sandwich really enjoyed it. So, overall as a chicken sandwich...good, but if we're talking Nashville hot...average. My friend got the half roast chicken with asparagus and really liked the dish. Came here at the tail end of happy hour yesterday. The place was packed but we were served fairly fast. Our server was attentive and looked out for us, keeping us abreast of how much time we had left to take advantage of the happy hour specials. The hot spinach dip is superb, very creamy and rich, with ample artichoke and cheese. I was skeptical about the bread, but it was buttery and light, making the perfect companion. This appetizer dish is also very filling! I'd had the shrimp and grits appetizer right before that (meh, too thin and too watery). I would have been satiated with just the dip. The real winner here is the jalapeño cucumber margarita. I've had jalapeño margaritas before, and this one ranks right up there with the best of 'em. The patio seating and people watching on a gorgeous day made for a great visit. 4 stars only for the pricing. Drinks were $8 and appetizers were $10 under the happy hour special.
