Went without the password, but bought tickets to the show. Definitely worth the price. Drinks are a little pricey and I do agree with the other review talking about the bar tenders lack of knowledge. Ordered drinks off the menu, the bartender looked at me like she had never heard of the drink (old Cuban) and said "I'll look it up". If it's on the menu, the bartender should probably know how to make it, at least she should have heard of it. The burlesque show was fun and the atmosphere was definitely 20's inspired. Just one big, fat nope. I got on the guest list which felt like having a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory. But, upon entering, the whimsical day dream died. The place is run down and in need of a good deep cleaning. Bathrooms were atrocious. The drinks were poor in quality, but cheap in price. You get what you pay for. A very cool concept, but poor execution. Mata Hari's is supposed to be a prohibition era speak easy. When the doors first opened the other night there was a crowd large enough to fill the entire place waiting to get in. We had a key, but apparently they are no longer using that as a requirement for entry as they let forty or fifty people right in, none of which had a key. There was a girl singing when they first opened but she only performed one song and then it was just a DJ. The drinks were too expensive, which I could understand somewhat if they hadn't been deplorable; literally undrinkable. They didn't know what a Sazerac was... in Georgia in a bar they didn't know what a Sazerac was... wow. No food. No bartenders who knew how to make or had even heard the names of common libations. I also wish they would enforce some sort of a dress code it would compliment the atmosphere much better. If they only served one thing for food I think that shrimp cocktail would be fitting given the 20's swank theme going on. Go for the ambience on a weekday. Its a cool place, just not nearly as cool as it could be with just a little more effort. read more

This was the one place my girlfriend had to hit on our trip to Savannah. Everyone had told us, or we had seen posted, that this was so difficult to find and to get into. I must admit we walked around a bit trying to find it but finally came upon it. We asked the doorman what we needed to do to gain entry. My girlfriend was dressed to kill so I'm sure that was a big plus. Once he confirmed, he buzzed the door and we entered the exclusive Mati Hari's (oh, and I did tip the door guy and so should you if you get in). When walking through the door you are immediately transported back to a bygone era. The interior was decorated in exactly what you would think when hearing speakeasy. The art on the walls, the mismatched furniture and dark room was the perfect blend with the smooth jazz and Sinatra playing over the speakers. This isn't a beer and shot kind of place. There are plenty of those around the corner. The cocktail menu is not too large but very tasty along with some beer and wines. I had read a few blogs about the Mati Hari Martini so I knew I had to try it. Must admit that I got a bit scared when the mixologist warned me about the strength of the cocktail. It's the trifecta blend of Absynthe, Bombay Sapphire and Grand Marnier and WOW was it strong. My girlfriend and I shared along with another sweeter blend of something. Can't recall the name. We finished with a mojito before moving on to the next bar. Very refreshing with a great amount of mint. They did have a burlesque show that we could have bought tickets for but declined since there were other spots we wanted to hit that evening. The theater is very small and is just off the "dance floor" behind a large curtain. It sounded like it was pretty good. High marks for everything they had to offer. Loved the vibe, the drinks, the staff and the throwback music. Remember to dress to impress, if you're not a key holder,(and dress to impress anyway) and tip well. Honestly a great spot, it is intimate and a cool adventure to find. The drinks are good and a reasonable price. Servers were good and took care of us. All that said, the music is way too loud for the size of the space. We asked if it could be turned down since it was just piped in standards over over sized speakers but were completely dismissed. We moved to a more remote part of the bar but it's so small that there's only so much you can escape the speakers. Would have been a 5 star if the guy at the piano would have just turned it down a couple notches for the 25 of us in the bar. read more

If I could give it a "0" I would. Dingy, carpet was gross, chairs stained, crowded, 60's music not of the era of a speakeasy. I got my foot stomped by a drunk dancing idiot while i was trying to get a drink. No show times until August, so they have nothing to offer that another bar doesn't have as well. I will start with the positives: great ambiance & excellent entertainment (although sporadic). The whole idea is genius. But you cannot pull the idea off with sub par drinks, unknowledgeable AND unfriendly bartenders. Let me be specific: the drink list is mainly old-school cocktails, but without descriptions. When asked what was in one, the bartender had to look in his Rolodex! I then asked for a simple Manhattan with a smokey scotch, whiskey, or bourbon, but he couldn't name one, or they didn't have any. The other part of the cocktail list was sweet martinis made with juice. In addition, the thumping from downstairs took away from the ambiance. So utterly disappointed. I thought this place would be the highlight of our trip to Savannah. Not worth the effort to acquire the key. read more

I used to love this bar. Recently it has been so crowded it's been very unpleasant. You needed a key but now it seems mass groups from out of town are coming in. I went outside to get my friends who were smoking and was not allowed in and it's been a line to get in for the past three times I have come here. My girlfriends took me here as a surprise for my bachelorette party and I LOVED it! It's like a hidden spot downtown, that I recommend it! The atmosphere was like stepping back in time and we were able to relax a bit from the hustle and bustle of the other clubs. I agree with the other reviewers that since you require a key (membership) to enter, it attracts a better clientele and crowd. The girl below's pessimistic review is quite wrong from my experience. Sounds as if she expected amusement park excitement from a bar, not going to happen. Here's my two cents on Savannah's speak-easy Mata Hari. Yes, it's private, but the $50 membership fee is well worth it. The place is decorated unlike any other bar in Savannah. A very comfortable "like home" atmosphere, that is put together quite nicely regardless of the "era" whether it be 20s or 70s type decor, when you enter mata hari's, you've stepped right into the past. Their bartenders have all been very friendly the few times that I have been, and definitely know how to make a drink. The prices are on the steeper side, but like I said, they know how to make a drink the correct way. The entertainment (singers) sing hits from the 30s all the way through the motown era. Expect to be moved as the singers dress in old, rag-time dresses and all sing beautifully. This is a great place to bring friends, family, and co-workers. I definitely recommend it. read more

The layout of the club was really nice but the entertainment was a bit lacking. I expected some live music instead of two guys sitting at a faux-piano playing songs off their computer. The songs also lacked any consistency, the dj's often asked for requests for any songs from the 20's and the 70's, which is really broad and not really what I would imagine for a speakeasy. The drinks were decent, but on the pricey end of town (which isn't a big surprise). I'd come back if I knew they had some live music or something. read more

We were able to visit this hidden 0earl on my recent visit to savannah. It was one of the best evenings of all. The atmosphere is wonderful and the drinks delicious. Is this a joke? Calling Mata Hari a speakeasy is like saying McDonald's is a great sushi joint. It's just not. First off, the space is in a dungeon at the bottom of a stairway that leads you into a gross alley. Supposedly, you need to get a "key" to get inside. Once again, that's a joke. The "key" is just a phone number you call to make a reservation. I would give it to you but I'm doing you a huge favor by not telling you. Just don't go. We showed our IDs to the doorman and walked in. The first thing I saw when we were inside was a guy in gym shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops. Does that scream classy speakyeasy to you? Me neither. The second thing we noticed was the terrible music blaring on full blast. I couldn't even hear myself think. With much trepidation, we walked to the end of the bar and sat at a table. I took one look at the cocktail menu and that was the final blow. We walked right out. There was not a single craft cocktail on the menu. If you consider a gin and tonic to be a unique cocktail then by all means check out Mata Hari and have a ball. If not, please go elsewhere. I'm sure Savannah can do better than this. If not, head to NYC and you'll learn what a real speakeasy is. read more

I have been to Mata Hari before with a friend and it was a fun time. Yes, basic cocktails,loud music and a cool throwback atmosphere as everyone has been saying. Live singing is a plus. Dressed casual and they let us in. Well, this past time was the total opposite and because of it I won't be returning again. We were down at Chucks and decided to come up to Mata Hari to show some friends how much fun it was. The group consisted of my partner and I and three of our friends. When we get to the door, we presented the key and the door man looks at us and says that there is a dress code now. How was I supposed to know because we had been dressed this way before and were allowed to enter. So we asked. And he said "more classy". So of course he was insinuating we weren't classy enough to give them our business. We had decided never mind and to go back to the bar where we were welcomed. In the meantime of walking off, we noticed a group of guys outside smoking, and the door man (colonel sanders looking guy) proceeds to let someone in with shorts, flip flops, and a polo t shirt, which is EXACTLY what we had on. So we walked back to the door and asked what was the difference in what that guy was wearing from us. The door man pointed out two members of our group, one being my partner and the other a friend and said that their clothes looked "old" compared to the other guy. We were in shock of what was said because these clothes were basically new. Therefore we felt that when he was confronted he didn't know what to say, so that was the comeback. Which leads us to believe that the door man was discriminating based on race, weight, gender or sexual orientation. He had no room to judge anyone based on his unkempt appearance (including his unruly, Ungroomed mustache) and lack of professionalism. WHATS THE USE IN PAYING A MEMBERSHIP FEE TO GET A KEY, WHEN I GET REJECTED AT THE DOOR FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON THAT COULD ONLY BE DISCRIMINATION. We hope that the owner see this concern and contacts us so we do not have to report to the Better Business Bureau and Savannah Chamber of Commerce for discriminatory practices. read more

We had heard rumors of this exclusive speakeasy, and how difficult it was to get in without a key or being in the company of a key holder. My group of four ladies, found the location of the club but saw the bouncer turning away people without keys. Without going into a long story, we met someone with a key who offered to get us in and we were so glad that happened. We walked into a lounge that was dark and had a cool old school atmosphere. A lounge singer in a beautiful gown was singing and there was a crowd at the bar but the club wasn't overly crowded. We found seats, ordered some some very well poured drinks and were thoroughly entertained for the evening. Groups came and went, some dressed casually some dressed a little dressy like we were. The singer made at least 4 outfit changes each gown more stunning than the last, and the DJ who only plays music made before 1978 kept us dancing until we were too tired to go on. When I return to Savannah, this is a place we have to visit again. read more

But the snotty pretentious door guy gave my bf a prob because he didn't have a dorky sweater vest & khakis like every other guy there, he wore a long sleeve express shirt and held him at the door until he felt like it while our group of 10 went in. I had an absolute blast with my husband!!! I had absinthe and he had a sidecar. I would go back to Savannah just for this Speakeasy. People that are complaining about it didn't embrace the culture and let loose. The music was fantastic- Joshua Thomas I believe was the singer. The girls were all dressed up and serving drinks at the bar. I could have sat there allllll night. I'm pretty sure I was supposed to be born in that era instead of this one! I had a cute outfit to wear but couldn't walk all the way back to our bed and breakfast and walk back. Its not too hard to find it, pretty sure we put it in the gps on the phone and found the address. I love that it's not overly crowded...that's special for a place like this. There's a club next door to it that you can hear the music through the walls but whatever no biggie. When I return to Savannah I will definitely return here- so much fun! read more

I reallllllllly wanted to like it, but sadly I just cant. Lets start with the good. I do agree with most here that the overall style and theme are great. Walking down the dark alley and needing a key is a great nod to the bars of the speakeasy era. The décor and the entertainment was also on point, but let me tell you what wasn't.......the staff and even more importantly....THE DRINKS. When I arrived there were maybe 8 other people in the bar and 4 bartenders. After standing at the bar waiting for service for 12 minutes while 3 of the bartenders talked about what they were doing later in the weekend I was handed a "menu" of drinks. It was 3 pages of sweet, syrupy, over done, fruity vodka drinks made with premade mixers. You spent so much time designing this beautiful spot and went out of your way to make it a prohibition style bar, but you hire basic run of the mill hipster bartenders with zero knowledge of craft cocktails and/or the era from which they come. You use premade mixers instead of crafting your own like you are suppose to. You serve fruity vodka drinks which didn't exist during prohibition. Prohibition speakeasys served rum, gin, and whiskey, they served super strong non fruity craft cocktails. If you are going to hire crappy bartenders to serve grenadine laced vodka you should have opened a college bar up the street. read more
