Always love the speakeasy idea and this one "requires" a password, but did not go password searching...we were staying out of downtown. Luckily the door guy let us in as I was only there for the night. Really cool place...dark and not too loud. Cocktails were delicious. The one we liked the most was not on the menu so make sure to ask about some off menu items if they aren't slammed. The bartenders are all dressed to fit the theme as were the singer and MC(?). They did a good job of giving it the feel of what I think a speakeasy or even just a regular bar like that would have been back then. They had a singer on Saturday night who was good but the MC made you feel a bit like you were at a strip club. A little tough to find, if you walk down Williamson St past the Quality Inn, you'll see very, Very VERY steep stairs. Carefully take those down to Lower Factors Walk (just take the first flight of stairs) and go left. You'll see the speakeasy on your right, a wooden door. I would not go unless you have a key or know the password, as I saw some people being turned away or walking away confused. I have read that most of the B&Bs in town will have one or the other. Some hotel concierge can also get the password (that's how we found out that night's password). Once you're in, you'll notice the whole place is 1920s art deco. The bartenders are wearing tuxedo leotards and there's a great drink menu. We listened to a live jazz singer on stage, she only performed a few songs but she was fantastic! Great little spot! I was there last weekend. The drinks are craft cocktails that you won't find really anywhere else in Savannah! They are a little pricier, but it makes sense because of the type of drinks they are making, throw in the live singing by a girl and the atmosphere, worth it. Finally! I found myself inside the famous, Mata Hari's. I am a huge lover of jazz and blues, and any excuses I get to wear my faux fur, I'm in. First, as you may have read from the other reviews, it's a hard spot to get into. Not everyone knows where it's located, and, how to actually get in. I'lll give a strong hint: if you're looking for the entrance, stop driving around. you need to walk toward the very end of River Street and start poking your head in the lanes. Once you do find the entry way, either you have a key, or you're dressed very nicely. If you look the part, the door man might let you in. Judging the crowd, not everyone inside has purchased the $100 key. When you step in, it's like a blast from the eclectic past. The lighting is low, and the music is high. We walked in to the sound of Ella Fitzgerald. It's a great mixture of old and new school. I won't give too much away about the scene, but I'll say this, don't come here looking for your typical night out in Savannah. Come here to swing, to be cool, and maybe to try a little absinthe. I love the concept. A private club that is a step back into a time where speak-easies were the only game in town---the only place to take a date and dance to a sultry satin gowned crooner while having a real cocktail. A Prohibition like vibe was clearly their goal. Well, the concept is great. To gain access you have to be with someone who has a "key" and for 50 bucks you can have a key, too. Only the concept was somehow mucked up. They need a decorator and some friendly bartenders! The Mixture of interior decor moves from Victorian to turn of the century to Adventure Island young explorers' club. Or some other nonsense. The young female bartenders wear black fedoras with a tux like top. It was weird. Like the dark dusty dank place was trying so hard to be cool it missed cool by a long shot. The singer was doing songs from the 40's. When she was not singing they played music straight from the 50's and the whole crowd was from the generation next. No real music lovers. The old-fashioned my friend ordered was made with club soda and was not presented with a smile or even a nod. There was a pool table and a backgammon board and some other wooden game that was set up in the front of the room. And a small bar with living room like furniture all arranged in a dark attempt to be exotic. What was the most interesting was that our group of 6 had very mixed reactions. Two of our group loved it. This club is one of savannahs hidden jewels. I've never heard of this establishment and neither did a lot of people in Savannah. I had to ask for directions several times. The club is on River Street and even people who worked on River Street had no idea what I was talking about! Lol I got a little frustrated but I'm glad that I stuck with it and found the spot because I was really impressed with what I saw when I entered. Apparently there is a concept of having a key which will gain you access to the club, kind of putting you in the mind of the Prohibition period. I wasn't aware of the key thing so I can't speak about that. However, this club has a roaring twenties/thirties and perhaps even forties theme. I have walked into places that have tried to make this happen and I think to myself, oh okay I see what they're doing here. But when I walked into the house of Mata Hari it was a MAJOR blast into the past as soon as I hit the door! It made my eyes widen and I really enjoyed that! Lol Perhaps that was because I didn't know anything about the club before entering so the change in scenery was delightfully jarring. It's very dark inside like you would expect . There weren't really any tables just a lot of easy chairs, sofas and coffee tables. We were welcomed with a song sung live on stage. Now, I had come to this club because I saw an advertisement for a performance of He Loves Me, He Loves Me Hot, a burlesque performance on the DOSavannah app on my phone. I remember thinking, how is an entire burlesque performance going to fit on this tiny stage? But I ordered my drink and had a seat. Then the DJ started calling names for ticket holders. They opened a door behind the stage and had us enter to be seated. How sneaky! I loved it! Ther, we were treated to the burlesque show as promised. Unfortunately, I could not snap any photos during the show but I really did enjoy it. The dancers performed about 7 or 8 songs and it was very steamy. The ladies and gentleman were HOTT! So glad that I decided to give this performance a chance as a last minute outing on a single girl's Valentine's Day. Not bad for $20! During the performance we were really taken care of. the two hosts were quirky and funny and really kept things rolling. The waitresses were prompt with ordering drinks and bringing them to us. My wife and I stumbled across this hidden gem and we were lucky enough that another couple had the golden key to get in. Once you cross the threshold, you are transported in time, taking you back to the Roaring 20's. Live entertainment and craft cocktails are just two of the many amazing experiences you will encounter. It is not overly expensive. The place is not that big, and it fills up fast. Try to get there right when they open to grab a seat. You can either sit at the bar, at one of the tables, or on the antique sofas and chairs. Once you are in, you can purchase a golden key. $50 dollars for six months, or $100 for an entire year. If you don't have a key, either try dressing up a bit, or staying at a local bead and breakfast which allows you to borrow a key. There were quite a few people who got in without a key, so it is possible. I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

Major potential, however, the service is terrible and it's just too loud. Let's start with the bar- awesome ladies busting their butts! They are moving non-stop. If this is going to be a real speakeasy, either limit the number of customers or add more bartenders. Otherwise, what separates this place from the others? Then there is the dress code or not....Any dude with cargo shorts and Sperrys or any chick in shorts and a tank could get in. No standards. Lastly, the music dude. I'm not too sure what his job is/was... Playing background music so the kick ass singer, Brandon Thomas (highlight of the place, by the way) could really take it away...I'll admit (and I did at the time) I was wrong but I jumped on the stage during a break to grab a quick pic in front of the mic, totally sober and not interrupting a set at all, thought it would be fun to send to my mom and boyfriend... His response was "no, down." Like I was a dog or something x2 Aggressive, rude, and condescending. Know your audience dude... We're all adults and a simple, "please step down" would have been sufficient. Then- about ten minutes later when I went to explain that he could've approached the situation a little differently... I know plenty of people who would throw punches or worse if they were spoken to that way and that's not me, so I was trying to offer a fair heads up on his lack on people skills. He was extremely aggressive and offered no apologies. I've got to give him credit for sticking to his guns but he's still a huge jerk and his attitude, on top of everything else, left a total sour taste about this place for me. Had the key, got in! Pretty cool concept, but I do have to say, I didn't feel as "special" going in...they kind of just opened the door, saw I had the key and let me and 5 other friends in. Was hoping it would've been a little cooler entry. The lounge singer, who was singing all of Christina Aguilera's songs was subpar. No passion, which was kind of a bummer when you want to feel pulled back into the older days. The one thing I liked was the piano guy, he played some cool tunes and we were able to dance for quite awhile swing-style :) The drinks were ok, nothing special as I believe someone else mentioned. Like I said, the concept is great, but the execution, pretty poor. If people are paying or even PAYING for the key or got a key from someone else and the whole idea is "covert"....treat people special. For some reason the locals seem to snub the place but I think they're just butthurt it's not ultra exclusive anymore. Here's the thing to know. The crowds come in waves. If you sit long enough, you get a place where you can have a conversation without having to scream and comfortable seating. When the waves come in, you can enjoy live soulful music and dancing. The staff (from the door man to The bartenders) are all super nice and chatty. There is a dress code but as long as you look like you're out for a night on the town, you'll be okay. I was dressed California work casual (jeans and a dress top) and had no problems. Came to Savannah for my bachelorette party this weekend. Heard about an amazing speakeasy and instantly became obsessed with getting our hands on a key to get it. Well we still never found the amazing speakeasy. Instead we found a dirty bar with poor drinks and a very rude doorman who argued and insulted my sister saying she wasn't a true firefighter since there's no fires in South Florida. Definitely did not live up to the hype everyone gave it. With a good cleaning crew and a face lift this place has great potential. But before all that, I suggest they get a new doorman since that's what patrons first experience before even stepping foot inside. And you only get one first impression. read more

Tried this place last night. It's okay, definitely had a speakeasy feel. It's a hodgepodge of decor though. I had an old fashioned which was watery and really just tasted of water with a hint of bourbon ( which I paid more for a better bourbon) However a friend had a glass of wine which was more like full goblet (so a healthy pour). I think the secrecy of the place is what makes it so interesting. The music was ok, they had a live singer who would sing about three songs then take half hour break then sing three more songs. There was a DJ, the music was not really the roaring 20's style I expected but more 50's - 70's. The music was very loud so it was hard to carry on a conversation in the place. I figured out why it was so loud when there was a break music- the club next door was so loud you felt and heard the dance music coming through the walls. Neat concept, not sure I would revisit though. If you call the number listed or text they will allow you to try the place without a key. I think this place may be nicer during the week than a Friday or Saturday night. Staff was ok, not overly friendly. read more

Love everything about this place! Love the speakeasy door in the back alley that you have to flip a switch before they open a window to see who it is. When you become a member that is the only way to get into this bar. They give you a key that you flash when they open the door. Everything about this bar screams 1920s. From the old hits, flapper singer, pool table, furniture, and glassware. The female bartender was a bit slow but the male bartender was on top if everything. It's relaxing if you want to sit and talk amongst friends or meet new ones. You can also get up and dance to any songs you feel like requesting. I wanted to hear some Elvis so he played me 3 songs. Drinks are a bit pricey but I would gladly pay more just to be away from the crowds, DJs, amatures, and lushes. All Zeros! Best kept secret somebody should have forgot. Went tonight place was extremely hard to find. Had to have a secret password to get in. Place was dark, loud, small, dated, looked like a graveyard for unsellable yard sale furniture. The drinks were small, overpriced and nasty, one with a gnat for garnish. I ordered an XYZ and a Mojito. They did not have the correct liquor as described for the XYZ and were out of mint for the Mojito. One bartender even joked with the other it's just a jito then...lol...not funny. Neither drink was drinkable. When my girl found the gnat she took it back and the inexperienced bartender asked if she wanted another jito..uh no! This was one of their signature drinks and the bartender had to Google the ingredients. We won't go back again. Don't waste your time with this one. First off, I absolutely LOVE Mata Hari's. I didn't even know it was there until I saw a few people walk out of an unmarked door in a cobblestone alleyway. I tried to go in then, but the white collar black tie doorman stopped me and informed me that this establishment was "Members-Only". Proof of membership is an old-fashioned-looking silver key. I managed to solicit an invitation from one of the members walking out and I stepped through the dimly lit door into a whole different world. The interior brings you right back to the 1920s, Prohibition is a big theme in this establishment as evident by their tall, crimson, velvet chairs, and couches for lounging. After the glamour of the interior settled in, I noticed a small stage and saw a woman wearing a flapper dress step into the spotlight to give a sultry rendition of "Sea of Love". I had picked the perfect time to walk in. Looking over at the bar, all the lady bartenders were gorgeously dressed in a tuxedo bodysuit, fishnets, and a long tail tux jacket. I thought that I had just walked onto the set of "Boardwalk Empire". Then it hit me. The House of Mata Hari is a Speak Easy! It was quite the experience, the only thing that bugged me was that as nice it was, there wasn't much of a dress code. Most people at least wore a button up shirt, but T-shirts and V-necks? Getting into this infamous bar was by far the highlight of Savannah! I had heard of the secret speakeasy through an online blog about the area and figured that we'd never get lucky enough to get in. You have to walk up to the door (it's in the alley behind 309 west and saddlebags) and you have to flip the light switch on the left side of the door. To my knowledge there was no sign to indicate exactly where you were you just kind of had to know. Also the bouncer wasn't standing outside like a normal bar, he was inside and dressed in a white button down and suit pants with a bow tie. When you walk in, it's perfect! Carpeted floors and bartenders dressed in fishnets and little tux-look-a-like leotards and an actual piano man/singers. The chairs are actual chaise lounges and big recliner like chairs just not actually reclining. We ended up randomly asking the right question to the right guy at the exact right time because he took us to the front door and into the bar like it was nothing! But usually you have to buy a key (membership). TIP: We ate at Vic's for dinner and turns out the woman who owns Vic's and the woman who owns 309 West and Mata Hari's, are really good gal pals. Try your luck with asking someone like a bartender at 309 for the password to Mata Hari's, apparently they know they passwords. That's where we were headed when I randomly asked this guy how to find 309. Overall, great experience. YES they do have absinthe, and the singer was amazing. Best night ever! read more

I've never seen a worse bartender in my entire life. Came in with out of town THIRSTY guests and she was so slow that the business lost a lot of money, since she could only make one drink at a time. I used to like this place a lot. They would not let us in because someone in our party had cut off jean shorts. As we were standing there talking a girl walked out wearing cut off jean shorts. One person in our party walked in to ask someone and there were multiple other people with cut off jean shorts. We went in to ask, and when we told the bouncer about the multiple people with cut off jean shorts (and even pointed one out to him) he got extremely angry and yelled for us to get the F out. This place does not treat everyone equally. At least the bouncer that was working. I guess only slutty girls with their boobs hanging out get in regardless of what they are wearing. We spent our day walking around Savannah anxiously awaiting for nighttime, so we could come to Mata Hari's. The mystery behind this password only speakeasy intrigued us, and we had high hopes and expectations. We secured what we thought was a super secret password from our bed and breakfast, but as it turns out, a password is the last thing you need to gain entrance. At first glance, we were delighted by the ambiance and quickly made our way to the bar to order a hand crafted cocktail. And this is where everything falls apart. Any self-respecting establishment that claims to be a speakeasy, serves drinks that are crafted by hand with fresh ingredients made in-house daily. I ordered a whiskey sour and was asked immediately if I wanted it made with egg whites. In true 1920s fashion, my immediate answer was absolutely! To my dismay, I watched the bartender pour Jack Daniels into a glass followed by sour mix you would expect to find at a bar catering to college kids on Spring Break. To add insult to injury, she then opened a box of egg whites and poured some into the glass. This was literally an attempt to add egg whites into a drink to check the box rather than adding it with purpose. In a nutshell, I was served a weak whiskey sour that awkwardly had egg in it. And lastly, the bumping of the bass through the walls from the attached clubs quickly ended any chance on maintaining an authentic vibe or atmosphere. You could easily get the same effect if you made yourself a drink at home, watched The Great Gatsby on your TV, and blast Lil Jon from another room in the house. This establishment has great potential but all charm was lost by putting in only enough effort to make it a gimmick rather than a gem. The entertainment was exceptional but for a true experience, I suggest you try Congress Street Up. They will serve you 100% authentic cocktails made by true professionals. read more

This bar was so much fun!!! Our server at dinner was able to get us a password - I had been asking around all day!! It's hidden and seems secretive. I love that you have to have a password to get in. We got there early (a little after 9) and got a seat at the bar. We ordered the absinthe after reading reviews about that. All of the drinks were strong! The decor of this place was so cool. The bartenders had on outfits to match the era. The lounge singer had an incredible voice. The whole experience was so much fun and I'm glad we got to check it out.
