They have very good teachers and offer courses in many languages such as Dutch, English, Italian, Chinese, etc. They also provide a certificate at the end of the course (which may be handy in case you need to take inburgerencursus). I took the Beginners I/II Intensive and Intermediate I Intensive, and I learned a lot. The teacher was amazing and really paid attention to pronunciation and grammar. Everything was explained clearly with plenty of in-class exercises. After the first 2 weeks, I was able to understand basic Dutch conversations and most signage. Now after both courses, I understand more and can have a basic conversation with Dutch people. The courses aren't cheap, but I think what makes UvA Talen stand out among all the language schools is the quality of their instructors. Gwynn was my "docent" and she was amazing! Just remember that the more you practice, the better you get! So the classes will give you a good foundation to build upon, and you should practice outside of class, watch Dutch TV, etc.

Your book is for someone who knows Dutch to learn ENGLISH. I do not understand for a language school that you just expect to teach in Dutch and have new students understand. It's an expensive course, I would like any focus to help students learn the language they are paying for. Also give students more than a week to get the book. It's so last minute, half our class was missing their books. When I asked the course materials early to avoid this, I was told the course materials were only a book. I later find out that it should be the book PLUS and online subscription. Just make your course and its requirements easier for the students to succeed. For something so expensive, there are 0 refunds the second class starts when you find the course recommended for beginners and have 0 clue what is happening in class because it's in basically in full Dutch. The course is marketed for absolute beginners.

Regina Coeli Where…read moredo I start? This is the language school of language schools! This is an intense course designed for usable language and is assessed on the CEF language scale. This place is locally known as "de nonnen van Vught" but there is only one left and at 87, she wasn't teaching (me at least). The teachers give you a Skype interview to check your level and understand your needs before enrolling you and everything is structured and well done including homework/prework if needed. All my colleagues and recruiters told me "you must go to the nuns to learn Dutch, it's the best!" My small company doesn't have access to these group lessons either but this place isn't cheap and I feel privileged to have been sent from work. It was necessary though as most of my work and meetings are in Dutch. I was learning Dutch and stayed for 1 week. They recommend 2 weeks to get you to A2 level. I was staying at de Ruwenburg (1 of 2 recommended hotels) where a taxi bus picked us up at 7:55am and picked us up most days at 9pm to return to the hotel. It's a long day! Lessons start at 8:20 and finish mostly at 6:30pm but you have dinner at the school which is a chance to practise your language also with at least two checked language "taaltafel" sessions where you are encouraged and checked on conversation. The day includes private tuition (3 multimedia, 3 lessons) and the mentor setting the theme for the day, grammar, communication then a group themed/structured conversation. For example I asked to be spoken to only in Dutch unless really struggling and for extra work. I made good friends with people as exhausted as me but my results were also good. People were mostly learning Dutch, English for business and a few French, Spanish or Italian. We were all exhausted by the Wednesday (most also not sleeping so well) and joking about the fact they have a restkamer and massage chairs on site and that the restaurant staff said all students find Wednesday a hard day that's why it's shorter! Some feedback from students that were there more than one week said they felt the first week was the biggest improvement week but that is to be expected. Saying that, first day back at work, I am speaking a little Dutch and my colleagues seem impressed. I find Dutch not an easy language to speak (no rolled r's here and please don't ask me to say "Beterschap") but this school and the consistent teaching; rather than dialect from colleagues telling me to say the same way 4 different ways, has given me the confidence and tools to speak Dutch quickly and correctly to ABN standard. As a manager of a completely Dutch team, this was very important for me and I was shy to speak Dutch in a "vergadering" before this. My result is in the post... Veel succes met de TaalCursus!

Basically you are doing self study with a tape recorder in a classroom with others while they learn other languages. There are several teachers who help you if you have questions, take your tests and listen in while you practice to offer pointers and assistance. This makes it so that you are learning at your own speed, whenever you want to! In my schedule it is impossible to go to a class every week at the same time, so I could never follow any courses. And private lessens are very expensive. This is a perfect solution! All the staff are very nice and the location is ideal, right on Koningsplein in the middle of amsterdam. I am currently learning French and just racing through the course. I only wish they were open more often! Highly recommended.

A very entertaining and productive course. I took the intensive four hour a day, two week course…read more- we had two teachers, one in the morning and one in the evening, two teachers with different styles but both a lot of fun and very responsive to the specific pupils in the class. I took their second level class. By the end of the first week, I had gained enough confidence and sentence patterns to be able to actually function for the first time in Dutch for simple things like buying in stores - I was impressed. Highly recommended!
