I was a bad girl. A very bad girl…read more Okay, so I was only a somewhat bad girl who just happened to cut a lot of classes. You can read about that in my account of Edward R. Murrow High School. Anyway, so my badness sent me all the way to ~CATHOLIC~ school in Florida. I stayed with my grandparents and attended this school for much of the day. It was WEIRD. The school was in Little Haiti and I did not fit in. I couldn't speak spanish or creole, I didn't drive, and I didn't have a boyfriend who could. I was stuck at this school, retaking chemistry (suddenly easy!) and history (boooooring. i felt like i was in 5th grade) and wanting to shoot myself on the concrete, palm bordered courtyard. It all changed when my chemistry teacher became my friend, and some Haitian girls took me under their wings. I'd go from making ice cream and speeding my way through chem assignments, to playing Scrabble and Risk with my teacher, to lunching in my friend's boyfriends gigantic Escalade with the windows down and the music pounding. Then I'd sit through history, open my mouth a few times and go home. It became a sort of joke for me. How fast can I finish this assignment?! How many times can I murder my teacher at Scrabble before lunchtime? I'm sure Archbishop Curley provides a wonderful learning experience during the regular school year, but the lack of challenge that I experienced in the summer was something that I had never felt before. Making ice cream was not something that would ever have happened at my high school in Brooklyn. I did, however, get a 5 star peek into the lives of Catholic School students in Miami. And 2 98s added to my report card. Huzzah!

They are not as "family oriented" as they like to present to visitors or when they do the scripted school tours. They only cater to activities or sports that are popular or favored. Hypocrisy is rampant among most of the staff and especially the administration.

They tell you to deal with it and find parking somewhere else completley disrigarding the risk of getting towed if you park somewhere near by leaving your car unatended for hours. Ever since Amanda Delgado became principal, the environment has totally changed. People walk on eggshells. Parents are scared to speak up because they've seen what happens when they do. What used to be a caring, family like community has turned cold and tense. So many amazing teachers are gone, and what's left doesn't inspire much confidence. Communication with parents is basically nonexistent we're left in the dark about everything unless it's a last-minute demand or payment. It's really sad what the school has become under this administration. We stayed as long as we could, but it's not worth the stress or fear anymore. We're done.

The new administration operates through fear, and many of the experienced teachers have departed, replaced by those who lack certification and teaching experience. While there is much discussion of religious values, the administration seems to lack fundamental Christian compassion. Again there is plenty of talk about education but if the principal's ability to send communication email to parents free of typos, grammar and spelling errors is any indication of the education offered in the school, then run.

I want to express my gratitude to Ingrid and all her teachers for the huge role they have played in our lives. For me as a mom, the school has been an immense support. Ingrid has been an angel in my life. I've felt understood and her guidance has been invaluable. During our five years here, we have worked together as a team. Nothing had stopped her. She is always thinking about what else to do to help the kids. Her wisdom, integrity, love and knowledge has helped both my son and myself! The program here is so much more interesting for the kids and there is more freedom in finding a pace and style that truly works for their unique needs.
