Had a terrible experience with the customer service and was shocked to find out that the old man behind the bar is the owner of this shop. He represents the cute atmosphere and mediocre ice cream very poorly. Might be worth the price for the experience but he ruins anything nice about the shop. read more

This is one of the best local ice cream spots in town. Not only that, it holds a lot of historical value to Akron, OH. Come here for generously sized sundaes and THE BEST peanut butter pie ever. I ordered a dish of strawberry ice cream and got a serving that would be a large anywhere else! The serving sizes are so generous; I don't understand how this place makes $$! There's a wider variety of flavors and toppings to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters! I'm not sure why but the pizza here reminds me of my childhood. It just takes me back to when I didn't eat pizza that much and didn't know about all the different types available. It was hot, fresh and the tomato sauce was tart but balanced the softness of the crust well. This is an ideal place to take a date. There's some outdoor seating available, perfect for people watching!! Whatever you do, please order the peanut butter pie. It's decadent, fluffy, and so delicious. RUDE. The experience we had at Mary Coyle was quite unpleasant. While traveling, we stopped by a place where the owner, I presume, inquired if we had read the menu displayed on the door. We were simply looking to order a cone. However, as soon as we entered, the man began to rant and raised his voice at us for not having made a decision prior to coming inside. I have never encountered such behavior from anyone, particularly an owner. Needless to say we turned around and left. read more

My wife, daughter and I had and excellent meal at Lock 15 Brewing where the waitress recommended we go here for a chocolate malt. As we entered the establishment we were greeted by a miserable, ignorant, and unhappy employee behind the ice cream bar. I now know that this person was the owner. I travel weekly to all parts of the country and eat out daily at many restaurants and cafes but after the 60 second unprofessional greeting we received from the owner we immediately left the establishment after his completely rude introduction. After reading several previous reviews and seeing a consistent pattern of behavior and service I only wonder how in the world does this establishment still keep its doors open when there are so many other more accommodating restaurants and owners that are desperately struggling to keep their doors open during these extremely difficult times. P.S. disregard the 1 star, you must select a star to post this review. A 0 star is certainly worthy of this one and only trip my family and I hope other families will be making here in the future. read more

Home made ice cream! I'm in! This review is just for the ice cream. Just finished my two scoop ice cream! I ordered coconut and vanilla almond- both were amazing but coconut was slightly better! The place was located in heart of highland square- close to Akron's downtown. The menu was slightly confusing but clerk lady explained me all. They also serve Italian food, but I haven't tried yet. I loved my ice cream and already thinking who I'm going to bring here at the next time. Small minus is that place is slightly outworn- I believe they need some interior update :) Nevertheless, come here and get some good and cold ice cream! I will be back lol read more

Will NEVER return. I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant in my life. My wife and I went here for ice cream following her birthday dinner. We had dropped our 5 month old son and 3 year old daughter with her parents for one of our first nights away in quite some time. We were enjoying ice-cream, playing a game of cards on the patio as we frequently did before kids, and having some rare, precious, and light hearted one-on-one conversation for the first time in a few months. Out of nowhere, a man came out of the store and yelled at us. Stating that we must leave as "there is no playing cards within or outside the restaurant." We apologized but quickly asked if this was posted. He just pointed to his mouth and yelled "right here!" I implore you to support small businesses, but please support businesses that support the people and families of our Akron community. I encourage you to encourage others to avoid this hostile environment. read more

I have eaten here many times and I feel it's a real blessing to have something so special as this place Located in the heart of Highland square. I love the shakes here! My favorite of all time is the raspberry coconut ! Most Everytime I come here I get one of those too. I wish they had dine in service but as in most restaurants , help is really hard to find. I feel that if you are ever in the neighborhood you definitely need to check out this place. Everyone deserves a delicious meal or sweet treat. First time visiting this place last night and we will definitely be going back. The choices of ice cream and sundaes was huge. I had the peanut butter and jelly, my husband had the original banana split. The flavors were amazing. My husband and I always thought it was just ice cream, but found out Monday through Saturday they serve food. Hubby can't wait to try the spaghetti sauce because what the waitress explained is right up his alley. I was so excited for this food because it's rare to find homemade gnocchi pasta anywhere, but it was a HUGE disappointment! I ordered their food from DoorDash and THIS is the entire dish they gave me. I paid $10 for a SIDE of pasta that was undercooked. The garlic bread was over cooked, soggy, and cold. The side of bread they give you with pasta dinners doesn't come with butter or anything to spread on. There weren't even utensils in the bag. My driver even said the staff was extremely rude when she double checked to make sure my order was right. Will not be coming back. read more

Ice cream is good. However- they lack people skills. No one in the parking lot BUT one staff member yelled at me because I apparently parked incorrectly in a place you are not supposed to park. However there are no signs indicating where to and where NOT to park. Plus the people inside except the one younger guy are pretty short with people. Idk. The servers there are NEVER friendly. There is no ala carte menu, so if you don't want a GIANT ice cream sundae, you're gonna have to fight with the unfriendly servers and then pay full price for less ice cream. Also, why do those poor kids have to wear uniforms that should've been left in the 50s? They look like indentured servants, which might explain why everyone is so unfriendly...or maybe it's because they owner is a total jerk, he'd make me give unfriendly service too. This is a perfect example of why buy local when local is subpar? I can go to big chains where they have a flexible menu, friendly servers, reasonable prices, and management that cares about pleasing their customers. FLAVOR! That's the word that comes to mind when I think about my experience this weekend at Mary Coyle Ice Cream. A few friends of mine wanted to go here and get ice cream after having dinner in the valley so we stopped in for a quick dessert. It's totally a 50's style diner inside which is kind of fun! I think kids would really enjoy this place. There are a ton of ice cream flavors to choose from not to mention sundaes and such. They also serve hot food so I'll have to come back and try that too. I got the vanilla almond ice cream which was very good. I think it's best to judge an ice cream place on its vanilla. That tells you what kind of effort they put into their ice cream and Mary Coyle is the real deal! One of my friends got some kind of butter rum or butter pecan or something and asked if I wanted to try it so I did and was immediately jealous that I hadn't ordered it myself.
