I've heard about this Birmingham institution for years, and finally got around to trying it out the other night after doing some brewery hopping with a friend. We were looking for somewhere to grab a bite to eat and wind down, and Marty's fit the bill! The bar is very dark, in both the indoor and the outdoor seating areas. There was some 90s pop and rap playing, and we thoroughly enjoyed that. I had the cheeseburger, which was pretty standard and came with a bag of chips. The place is pretty small and divey, and has a tiny pool table inside. There is a small membership fee, which allows the bar to stay open at all hours. Definitely somewhere great to go and relax after a night out. Go check them out!

It's 11 pm on a Saturday night. The place is empty. There's a $5 cover charge. We had to answer questions about our occupations and give a phone number to even get in. Invasive -its only a bar. Piped in music. The food is the only saving grace.

What do you do when you finish up an awesome concert with Weezer on the UAB Green for the 50th Anniversary? Follow the crowd to Marty's... Food- we went for food. We were hungry and had already been advised, don't stop at the Mediterranean place up the street(*since I didn't try it, I am not going to judge) we ended up at Marty's. We both ordered grilled cheese and I had the tomato bisque with mine. The burgers, sammies, and food that came out quick, hot, and delicious won lots of praise around us. (Disclosure: in my 40s so my iron stomach of my 20s no longer can handle late bar food y'all) Our grilled cheese was basic but so delicious. 2 kinds of cheese- most likely an American and Cheddar on nice grilled and hot bread. The grilled cheese is served with a pickle spear and a bag of chips. Mine was the Tomato Bisque appetizer with grilled cheese. Same sandwich but with a nice cup/small bowl of a thick chunky bisque. Good flavor and perfect for a chillier night. Amosphere/Service - after paying the $5 cover and checking id's, we stepped inside to order at the bar drinks and food. The one bartender was taking orders, pouring drinks, and serving food inside and on the patio. She won my vote for best customer service in the 'Ham bc to balance all that was impressive by any waitstaff success. Seriously she had it down and exceeded. She kept track or orders and was very nice, while remaining efficient. After ordering, we took our drinks to the patio. One the inside was pretty tiny. And since the live music would start in about an hour (or was around 10ish) we didn't want to be in the party, so opted to be outdoors. The tables filled pretty quickly despite the "early hour" and we had our drinks and caught up. Food was out within the first 15 minutes and we were wrapping up pretty quickly. It wasn't meant to be fine cuisine and it solved our need for a late night bite. Food is reasonable as $5.50(sandwich only), and $10 for the bisque and sandwich. Drinks and tax rounded out our other $14.50. Overall we liked it and would drop in again to this friendly and likeable dive.

Marty's may have changed my life, and by that I mean their alcoholic concoctions have shortened my projected life span by, at least, two years. And yes, it's true. This college dive bar institution is really open until 6AM since, because technically it's a "club." Pay a measly two-dollar membership fee at the door, and you're in. Oh, and you'll also receive a nifty, paper membership card that you can bury into the depths of your wallet. Things to know: ***** I. LOCATION & PARKING This "club" resides on a one-way, and there's absolutely plenty of free parking everywhere. No worries. II. FOOD & DRINK Sure, they have a late night grill that will satisfy anyone from hungry stoners to wasted sorority chicks to that gargantuan man who can put down, like, four quarter-pound burgers in one sitting. Want greasy, stomach-clinging eats? They have them. And then the drinks... I had a Good People IPA, a shot of tequila, and then probably the worst/ best concoction to ever grace my lips: The Bushwacker. A new cherry got popped that night... I hazily remember, this malty, chocolate milk-shake lookin' elixir which is, supposedly, the redneck version of a White Russian. And the last time I drank a White Russian was my sophomore year of college where I puked out of my bathroom window all night with about two hundred people in our 1200 square-foot apartment raging. (Like people sleeping in the bathroom raging.) So I decided to have two of these bloody... things. About the drink itself, it's Mai Tai like frosty, the liquor is maybe vodka based, and it will give you gut rot and chest hair at the same time. I swear by the end of the night I went temporarily cross-eyed, for a good minute or two. It also gave me a post-prom like hangover, which felt like Ip-Man punched me fifty times to the cranium, or like someone ran over me with a John Deer tractor. I also sent a few texts to my friends that read "xjkjdklj;qpqhejruqjhla," and they might as well have been hieroglyphics. I also should be expecting a cleaning bill from my hotel. III. SERVICE No qualms here. They were very nice, especially to this out-of-towner, and they provided fantastic recommendations on where to go around town for brunch. IV. AMBIENCE & DÉCOR They have two main spaces: a small patio and very air-conditioned inside. A good number of small tables exist and a robust bar is at the back. Bumper pool, and other bar games exist. No corn hole, unfortunately. V. PRICES I'm not sure, but, like most places in Birmingham, it won't break the bank. But what do I know? I was in another stratosphere last night. VI. OVERALL The next time I get a physical, the doctor will look perplexed after listening to my lungs on my back with his stethoscope. But then he'll have an "a-ha" moment and say, "Oh, you sound like you just had two years of your life shaved off. Did you drink a Bushwacker in Birmingham?" And I'll reply, "Yes, I did, doctor. Yes. I. Did." Love Marty's.

Soup changes daily and this day was chickpea and chorizo. Nothing life changing about it but it wasn't bad. We walked into a small, dark, crowded dive bar and ordered amongst several other people after waiting in line shoulder to shoulder with other customers. I say this not to complain (because with a crowd like this on a random weekday, they're obviously doing something right) but to take your kids in car seats (‍) with caution. Crowds in small spaces stress me out and it would have been even worse if we'd had the boys with us. I'd also highly suggest going on a day when you can sit outside. There's very minimal seating inside. They do have a lovely, spacious patio that also feels like a garden with plenty of trees for shade. However, they make it clear they don't want dogs there. Parking was horrific. A narrow street with cars on each side. We barely fit through it. If there wouldn't have been an open spot on it, I'm not sure what the next option is because I didn't see anywhere else and this street only held so many. I would dine here again because the sandwiches were fresh and delicious and they obviously know what they're doing! I was pleasantly surprised that they had prosecco as well. Just heed my few warnings and you'll enjoy as well!

The Nick is definitely not for everyone -- but it's absolutely an experience you'll never forget…read more After my friend (who was hosting us) passed out, my other friend and I decided to see more of Birmingham's nightlife. A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

But we'd spent the day at McWane Center and we were starving so we were there to EAT! The food looked gorgeous but it tasted very meh. The onion rings had too much breading on them, which I didn't think was possible, but here we are. The part of the breading next to the onion was mushy so that threw off the texture of the whole thing too. The burger was very much like a Whataburger. Even the lettuce smelled the same. I got The Standard and the bun of the burger was a little mushy (similar to Whataburger) and there was not much meat. For an $11 burger, I'm expecting more than a Whataburger. My middle kid likes everything on her burger and isn't picky at all and the loaded kid burger looked impressive but it was about the same as mine. Not awful, but not very good either. Very close to the same amount of meat. She's the queen of the Clean Plate Club and she only ate half. The fries were good but a somewhat too salty, the dip that came with the onion rings was excellent and we ended up using it for the fries. We had 2 adults and 3 kids and our meal was $63 before tip for 5 waters, 2 adult burgers, 2 kid burgers, a kid grilled cheese, and a basket of fries and onion rings (I thought I was ordering a "side" of fries, not realizing I actually ordered a basket and it was a lot of fries and onion rings). We don't mind spending money on good food, but the prices here don't align with what you get. No one was more disappointed than me, I've been wanting to eat here for FOREVER!!!
