One of the most exciting sports teams to follow in Vienna are the Fivers from Margareten - Vienna's…read more5th District (and that's how the team got its name.) The 5th District is crazy about their professional handball team and well they should be. The Fivers are one of the best handball teams in Central Europe. The teams from Vorarlberg have dominated Austrian professional handball of late with the sole exception of the team from Margareten. The fan base in the 5th District is extremely strong and vocal. The Fivers sponsor lots of kids and women's sports programs and their Fivers Magazine is delivered to every residence and pub in Margareten. No team looks forward to playing the Fivers on their home court - Sporthalle Margareten on the Hollgasse. Last night in the opening match of the Austrian Championship pandemonium was in the air. The Fivers have already won both Austrian Cups this year and are going for the Dream Three titles by now winning the league championship as well. Standing in their way is one of the teams from West Austria - perennial powerhouse Bregenz. In a thrilling match, the Fivers won in overtime 31-29. They need one more win to say for the third time this season "We are the Champions." Let's Go Fivers!! https://www.youtube.com/v/kj8nFoAfSWY Tip - If you're visiting Vienna, seeing the Fivers play in person is a great intro into the Vienna sports scene and a fun evening out. Hey it's Vienna - one night go to the opera, the next evening watch professional handball!

Congratulations! One of the most famous Austrian soccer teams, Rapid got better and better by…read morerevitalising and applying some of the simpliest rules that have been already standard 30 years ago and they struggled hard to come that far. One of the main problems nowadays is very often that when players win, they become nosy and as a result lose again. Arrogance is one of the reasons why today many games are lost. Today money is dominating all types of sports and somehow the quality of sports decreases. As a further consequence behaviour and common sense suffer. Rapid is only a typical example. What is the difference between Spain and Austria? If you compare the players, the Austrians show lot of overstrain signs, don't look helathy even when they are playing, the Spanish are, physically spoken, in a much better condition. - and - the most important thing - you can see that the Spanish enjoy the game, enjoy playing soccer, the Austrians give the impression that they hate being there, it is obvious that they do it ONLY for money. The Spanish also let their children participate at the end of their EM game. They plaid soccer in front of the whole stadium with their children and everyone enjoyed it. The Austrians never did something like that. Although they took part in more activities with children. But it was not like in the olden days, when the Austrians also had the same mentality like the Spanish and won many games. The main problem is really thinking that money could solve all problems. The moment Rapid lost the next game, the Austrians blamed the system of sponsorship, not themselves! Money destroys the character of people. The stupid actions of youngsters, people between 20 and 30 show! The character makes a champion, not the age and not money!!! What is the difference between America and Austria? Simply the fact that in America when an amateur player is good at his league and seen by a talent scout, he can change to the professional league and keeps the position he is good at and has been choosen for. And it works!!! Of course there are also problems, but not like here. Hooligans, no way! First of all you should intensify the body search at the entrances. - but watch out! Today the typical hooligan is not a huge guy with lots of tatoos, its a the little shy office type of guy. Place security and police in civil clothing amongst the spectators. As soon as there is a wrong movement, they can act quicklier. In Austria, the general idea is, as soon as you "bought" a new fantastic player the world is perfect. But somehow, after a while the players perform worse. Why? Wrong position, greed, jealousy and playing with not completely cured injuries or maybe also getting all the time injuries caused by too much pressure on the body caused by the wrong type of training. In former days we got much more medals without less money and less suportive personnel. The reason? Simply said, those few people that were there, were human, respectful and competent. In the olden days, there were almost no injuries at this sport. If, today, more than half of the team is sitting on the bench because of ligament ruptures, fatigue breaks - well there must be something wrong... All sports have been national sports, meaning that you trained your youth and when they were good enough they took part in international competitions to represent their country. Austria always looks at other athlets and complains instead of motivating, strengthening and backing up their own athelets. Of course, you could also take foreigners into the team, but then you have to make sure that all of the players form a team - soccer is a team sport!!! And - there is no back up from the management any more for the trainer and the players. Why can it be that one of the best trainers ever, after even a row of victories, is sacked??? If the players lose one game after the other, it can't be only the fault of the players, it is the responsibility of the entire club. But also with other Austrian sports, the back up for good behaviour, achievement and hard work is not there anymore - no wonder that sportsmen behave like little misbehaving children!!! But the worst thing I think is that an official calls Dinko Jukic (ex-Jugoslave and now Austrian), a swimmer that achieved lots and won medals in the name of Austria the worst name you can call a foreigner in Austria adding that the swimmer should better swim at home in his own country!!! THIS IS NOT THE ATTITUDE OF ALL AUSTRIANS!!! LOTS OF PEOPLE SUPPORT JUKIC! But it should make people start thinking about their actions, in the past there was almost no scandel, no misbehaving, insulting, humiliation, but a little bit more fairness and therefore much more achievements - !!! The basic idea of sports is completely gone! Go to a soccer field where little kids are playing and see the fun and enthusiasm on their faces - this is what sports is all about! Not to forget the Olympic though

Tonight was a crisp Friday evening in Vienna and there's no better way to enjoy it than heading up…read moreto Döbling to take in a First Vienna football match at the legendary Hohe Warte Stadium. Let's start with First Vienna or just Vienna as everyone calls it. This is the oldest football club in Austria and one of the oldest on the European continent. They have proudly worn their blue & yellow colors since their founding in 1894. They play in the First League of Austria which is one level down in competitiveness from the top league but it is equally enjoyable as the top league. Even though my main football team is Austria Wien .... because they play in different leagues, I can also root enthusiastically for First Vienna. When I was younger, I lived in Döbling and all around me everyone was a huge Vienna fan. Though the city of Vienna football fandom for the most part is divided between Austria Wien and Rapid fans, Döbling remains loyal to their First Vienna club. And even if the working class Vienna fans don't march in the tremendous numbers that they used to in the 1930's from the nearby Karl-Marx-Hof up to Hohe Warte Stadion, First Vienna still rules the 19th district. And now for Hohe Warte Stadium. It's awesome. When it was built in 1921 it was considered the best football stadium in Europe. The Austrian national team used to play there and once they had 80,000 people for a match against Italy. The stadium is built into a hill with stands on one side and three grass embankments on the other sides. From the hills you can see all over Vienna. And a tip - attached to the stadium is the Vienna Stüberl which is an awesome place to enjoy an Austrian beer and some hearty food before a match. And actually the Stüberl is open everyday - even when there aren't matches... so you can enjoy it throughout the year. Anyway, First Vienna won tonight 3-1. Their fans at Hohe Warte Stadion loved it and so did I.
