This place should be closed down and condemned. I have a painful full body rash from the pesticides they use which don't work. My skin feels like it's on fire. My rashes are pinkish red with welts, blisters and bumps. This place is infested and contaminated with huge roaches and bed bugs. I have thrown away everything I entered the hostel with and now I must go to the emergency room because my rashes are causing me severe pain. I paid $25 a night and that was $25 too much. Bed bugs, gigantic mosquitoes, old men drinking beer, stray cats, rusted bunk beds, mold and mildew, peeling paint, nonfunctional air conditioners, the hugest roaches I have ever seen in my life were breeding in the kitchen (some people call them water bugs I call them roaches). Don't stay here!

If you know what you're getting into with hostel stays, an incredible option!…read more The randomness of travel is amplified many fold if you're opting to get into hostel options, so if you're alright with all the potential downsides along with the good, I would always give Auberge a chance. It feels very homey, as if you were staying with a friend of a friend, and all the associated risk that come with that. The location itself is great if you want to be out of the touristy bustle by the French Quarter, but very accessible to everything. The 12 line up and down St Charles is incredibly convenient to explore all of the Garden District and its assorted shops and restaurants, or you can go further to magazine street, then back to those touristy parts once more (with other options if you don't mind a normal city bus). The building itself shows some age, with some creaky boards or stairs, but is otherwise very comfortable. This is very much a case where you should feel as little need to be in bed as possible but also feel safe and secure in sleeping there when ready. I can only speak to the people who helped me while I was there but they were immensely friendly and welcoming. The hostel itself has a messaging group set up for guests their entire stay so you find suggestions and help whenever you need during your stay, including other people looking to explore if you're in a similar mood. Every night there are group get togethers and discussion so can feel as connected as you'd like while you are in town. The kitchen is basically well equipped, so you can have options if it gets to where you get back after everything is closed. All in all a fun experience, and I'd recommend it to anyone for whom solitude and being pampered is not the priority.

The building is gorgeous on its own, but the art, decorations, and pictures of fellow travelers on the walls endeared me to the place. The kitchen is small, but serviceable. Staff provide some free food and snacks if you're down a buck, or just feel like having a PB&J on the house. There's a small living room area with a record player, a chess board, and a dinky mini-guitar that I strummed on a few times. The best part of the experience, besides it being a very clean place, was definitely the staff. They're volunteers that manage the property in exchange for their stay and some private amenities, so they truly didn't need to do more than the bars minimum. However, the bare minimum was far from what they provided. They were attentive to the guests, fun to chat with, and always kept the place in good shape. A few of us offered to help with minor chores just to give them a break from how hard they're always working, but they'd simply ask us to have the best time possible and continue about their work. I highly recommend staying at this hostel. If you're a queer person like myself that gets worried about safety or acceptance, be it of your sexuality, gender, pronouns, or presentation, you can relax in this place. Respect your fellow human, respect the space, and they'll take the best care of you.

I stayed for a couple of weeknights in November, so that might shade my experience. I only saw the owner/manager when I checked in, but she was nice and full of knowledge of the area. I did come with a car, and although I was able to easily find parking and my car didn't get broken into, I would highly suggest just not driving to New Orleans. That's whether you stay here or elsewhere. Parking prices and driving habits are very Chicago-esque. And there is a large homeless population all around town, so it's hard to tell where is safe and where is not. The owner actually suggested the streetcar which was only 6 blocks away, and that or an Uber is probably your best bet. Especially if you'll be stumbling back. If you plan to come in when it's particularly hot or cold (well as cold as it gets there), I would look to other reviews as far as how cold or hot the house gets, as there didn't seem to be a lot of temperature control. Just a fan that I saw in my room. I was fine, but I had great weather while I was there. I can't vouch for temperature extremes. Other than that, the noise was... I'm sure much quieter than if you stayed closer to the tourist traps, but you're still very much in an urban setting. Road noise, random alarms, conversations from the street... if that bugs you, you'll probably have to stay in the suburbs or in one of the overpriced hotel towers. Past that, it's a hostel. It's safe and clean, but it's not going to be for everyone.

The name is French Quarter New Orleans Hôtel but when you search that it's impossible to find their site because that just sounds like a general search. I originally found them on Expedia and booked there but then at some point I think I had found their site somehow to check and see if this was a legit place because the price was too good to be true. I found them and called to make sure our booking went through and at first Steve, the owner, was like no I think we are all booked for Mardi Gras (when we went) and there's no way you just booked a spot in January (when I reserved the room). So I panicked and he checked and was like oh no I'm wrong, I do have hall down for a room. So I was like oh yay, and he asked why didn't we just book on their website and I was like uhh I found y'all on Expedia and it was so hard to even find your website after, but I would've never been able to find it otherwise. I also had like 20% off on Expedia for signing up on the app or something random like that so it helped bring the cost down a little. We wanted to go for Mardi Gras weekend but we didn't book until January and even before then, hotels in downtown Nola are extremely expensive for that weekend. Like literally 500$+ a night before fees and everything. We were certainly not trying to pay hundreds of dollars each for two nights. We ended up going in two groups and some people chose an Airbnb 1 hour away for 30$ a night each person.. but for me that is soooo not worth staying an hour away and having to choose a DD and even if the person doesn't drink while out, they'll still be tired to drive back. So my group of 4 found this place for 80$ each person each night, right down town within walking distance from everything. Literally 10-15 min walk everywhere and the area was safe and it was really perfect! we never had to take any Ubers, just walked so well well worth the price! And it was considerably cheaper than anywhere else. The best part was that it was a room with 2 bunk beds so 4 individual beds like a hostel, but we had the room to ourselves. Liked that the beds were that way since we were 3 girl friends and 1 guy friend, for our own group it was better that everyone have their own bed since we didn't really come in pairs. Then we had a big bathroom for our room as well. So kind of like a hostel or bnb type of place but everything was private. Even the room was like through the courtyard of the main living area and up some stairs so we had a balcony and there was one room next to us but we enter from outside so it was like a mini apartment. Really good privacy and also meant entering the main building, then going through courtyard up to our room so lots of security! THE BEST PART. First the owner was so nice! Very accommodating and was able to meet us later for checkin since we had to make a stop on the way at the hospital because I ripped out my cornea haha so we were very late getting there compared to the time we said we'd arrive and he was very understanding and flexible. We got there and he showed us around and breakfast was said to be Included but we really didn't plan to eat there. We were going to get beignets anyways and he apologized and said he hasn't been doing breakfast since his wife passed recently it has been harder for him to manage it all alone. So ofc we were understanding and that is totally normal BUT he had stocked the mini fridge for us for free!! He was so nice and it was so nice to have a few drinks in the fridge for in the room while getting ready. He even supplied glasses and bottle opener, for anyone that would need them! The wifi was good and the place was impeccably clean! The sheets felt cleaner than any hotel I have ever stayed at. We were just blown away by the cleanliness and kindness of the owner and all for an insanely good price in a prime location! Again the only negative is that idk how you can find this place. There is the owners phone number in the photo you can call to book but I searched and couldn't find their website. Idk how I found it the first time. You may be able to find them on Expedia like I did but highly recommend booking for your trip and I'm sure in the off season it is even cheaper. Prime location and price! There was no parking though and we came by car so we found a random free spot on some street and left our car there for the weekend since we didn't drive at all and didn't need it. I was hesitant but it was a legal spot with no limit so that worked out but there's no parking at this hotel. We will definitely always stay here if we go to New Orleans!

I was VERY hesitant about booking my stay here, given its majority of negative reviews on Yelp. Though, in all fairness, nobody's added a review on here since 2011 and the reviews for it on hostels.com are not only more up to date, but are a lot better. I took it as a sign that the owner(s) were receptive to the feedback they were getting, and spruced it up a tad. Keep in mind, folks: This is a not a hotel, it's a HOSTEL. An old, rickety house located in a somewhat sketchy area of New Orleans surrounded by decaying homes and feral cats running around. If you decide to stay here, no diva demands allowed. The good: + Close walk to the French Quarter/Bourbon Street. (At least by our standards...took us less than 20 mins. on foot.) + You get assigned a special numeric code that you type in to enter the front door and your room. Smart way to keep those shady characters out. + Free things: Wifi, towels, coffee, and pancake mix in the kitchen. + Wasn't crowded when we stayed. I saw probably 3 people the whole time and never had to wait to use the bathroom. + Access to a washer and dryer. + The girl working there (forgot her name, my bad) was nice and helpful. Gave us a map, some tips, and made recommendations on places to check out. The bad: - No soap in the bathroom, other than liquid hand soap. - There were no curtains on the single window in our room, other than this flimsy, frilly sheer linen. Sure, it was only facing the side of the house next door, but given the neighborhood it was in, I felt paranoid I'd see a crackhead staring right at me from outside of it! - Did I mention it was in a sketchy area? If you're going to walk anywhere, take Esplanade Ave. It's pretty much the only busy and well-lit street nearby. - A/C issues. Humidity in NOLA is insane, and heat + old house with no insulation = gross times. On our second night staying there, our room was hotter than Chewbacca in a flannel sleeping bag, even with the ceiling fan on. Barely slept and we had 8 hours of driving followed by a 5 hour flight the next day. The ugly: * A lot of toiletries are left behind by previous travelers (shampoo, mouth wash, etc.). Be careful what you use -- some are old and naaaaasty! * Huge spider on the toilet flusher and a moth flying around in the shower, 'cause we all love good company in the bathroom, right? Overall, if you want to save a few bucks and you're not above sleeping in a squishy bed with stiff sheets and bathing in a shower that belongs in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, come stay at Joe & Flo's.
