While traveling the coastline in Nova Scotia i found this cafe off the main highway. Walking in you…read moreare greeted with a smile and a plethora of food options on their menu boards. Baked goods permeate the ocean air that flows from the open windows. This is an order your meal at the counter then find a table format, which if you're not a local it's hard to figure out which i observed while waiting to order. I had a generous portion of a seafood chowder that was thick creamed based, overflowing with substantial seafood and not just potato fillers. Then came the obligatory lobster roll which was one of the best rolls I've had! I finished with a homemade coconut cream tartlet that was good but had a tad too much gelatin for my palate. I'm all about texture and taste. Overall, my meal was very good and satisfying. The location is off the highway so pay attention youmight miss it. Cafe area was clean and well kept. Bathrooms were super clean ( bonus for this road warrior ), plenty of parking and outdoor dog friendly tables that each have water bowls and treats. That always impresses me as i travel with my chocolate lab all the time and to be abe to eat with her is a big deal. After you eat you are surrounded by a bunch of anti-rooms filled with local touristic nick-knacks. Café's such as this one are far and few on this island so if you're passing through stop in for a great meal!!

A friend highly recommended the turkey dinner (all the fixings like Thanksgiving) and it was an excellent choice. Cute gift shop and delicious bakery! Try the ginger snaps!!!

Only the locals know about this little market that's also a homestyle diner…read more When I am visiting family in New Glasgow, this is my FAVOURITE spot to go for breakie or brunch, because the quality of this greasy spoon plate of breakfast cannot be matched. The last time I was there, my jaw actually dropped at the size of the two over easy eggs on my plate! I'm sure they come from a local supplier - these wouldn't fit into the normal grocery store egg categories. Hashbrowns are also phenomenal. And, I don't know another local diner in the area that gives you a breakfast plate with homemade, thick cut toast, dripping in butter along with breakfast meat that will go above and beyond any other diner's attempt to satisfy. Trust me, this plate of awesomeness is not for the faint of heart, but it's bar none the best breakfast in all of Pictou County. Opt for the sausages - you won't be disappointed. And then make sure who ever is with you gets the bacon. Cause you'll obviously want to try a strip of that, too. Service is laid back. Coffee is fine - it's diner quality, and that's fine by me. The floors creak and the locals pretty much have assigned seating. Tables are small and the ceilings are low, but it's all part of the atmosphere, folks! Don't forget to pick up a few baked goods from the general store. Pies, rolls, breads and other yummy items are always fresh baked and are completely drool-worthy. Enjoy!

I was happy to see that a place serving hot food opened within walking distance of my place, and…read moreone day I popped down to pickup lunch for my wife and I. They post their soup schedule on their Facebook every week, and we lucked out because my wife has a nostalgic soft-spot for their soup of the day that day, corn chowder. Soups come with a biscuit or roll, and I doubled down on biscuits. The corn chowder was still piping hot after taking everything home and getting set up to eat. The soup was was creamy and smooth, with pops of sweetness and texture from the corn. The biscuits were buttery and lightly flaky, and while the exterior was a bit more firm and roll-like than a typical biscuit, it didn't detract from it. I had also picked up a loaf of whole wheat bread, which was light, airy and moist - great for sandwiches or on its own! On a return visit, it was another batch of soups - the daily special of clam chowder and the alway available, tomato cheddar. The clam chowder was thick and chock full of bits of clam and perfectly bite-size chunks of potato. I went for the roll this time, and it was light, smooth and great for dipping. My wife's tomato cheddar was a great, simple soup. The namesake flavours were front and centre and it had a silky mouthfeel from the added fat of the cheese, but the sauce didn't break and have actual pools of grease. For dessert, I bought a couple of their iced cinnamon rolls. They were light and airy - definitely head and shoulders above the grocery store ones - and a quick run through the microwave softened that butter/cinnamon/sugar mix wonderfully, without completely liquifying the icing. A Slice of Home is a fantastic addition to both the neighbourhood and the town as a whole, bringing thoughtfully made goods at affordable prices.

Came here two dinners in a row (because the second night nowhere else was really open) so tried quite a few items on the menu. Really enjoyed the seafood chowder. It was full of seafood and tasted so good. Little shrimps, scallops, pieces of fish. Consistency of the soup was more watery than creamy but I enjoyed it like that. Also tried the battered fried fish and the fish tasted good. For me, the batter was a bit oily though. Still very tasty. The fish cakes were nice and fluffy, and garnished with some sweet marmalade type stuff (not sure what it was). At first I thought there was bacon mixed in but I think it was actually the smoked fish i was tasting. The caesar salad was ok. I felt that it had too much dressing. Tried a sip of the blueberry blonde and it was also just alright. All in all, I found the food to be a little bit of a gamble in terms of whether it would be really tasty or not. It was also odd that the first night we were offered complimentary biscuits with some maple butter of sorts, whereas the second night we weren't offered it. Also on the second night, we were asked where we would like to sit. When I said we would like to sit in the dining area, the waitress told us that the tables weren't set up. I wasn't sure what she was implying by this cause it didn't come with a follow up - did it mean we couldn't sit there or just had to wait? Turns out we just had to wait and after a quick minute it was set up for us and ready to go and the rest of the evening was very nice.
