My kids loved the art and music program. They came to Hillside School not able to read. They returned to public school with top grades and studying skills. They are all going to attend college. Hillside looses a credit rating because of the way that food is made. The food comes from Sysco, the company that makes window washer, and that's exactly what the food tastes like. On the other hand, Hillside's sports program is just a bit off. The Hillside motto, is that they will teach you anything you want to learn, but that's untrue. I had to sit out, because no one though I was good enough to Junior Varsity basketball. So, I had to sit on a couch for the whole winter, with no sport, doing my homework. It was honestly the most obnoxious lie I've ever heard from a school, loss of two approval stars.

I moved to Burlington 2 years ago and heard about this place from time to time. My first experience with this fantastic facility was sending my 4 year old daughter to Science class there. Since that first time, she has taken more enrichment classes, had her birthday party there, attended summer camp along with my 2 special needs foster kids. My prior foster daughter attended the Saturday "night out" social (and loved it) and my 15 year old daughter has volunteered there for the past 2 summers. Maryanne (the owner and teacher) is fantastic with all the kids. She is always happy, calm and affectionate with the kids, offering them a fun unique learning experience with the comforts of home. Carlos, Maryanne's husband also works at Echo - he is a very warming and gentle man that all the kids love. He does more of the books and the meet and greet of parents but is always around offering a helping hand. Over the past year, I have noticed many parents pulling their kids out of public preschool and sending them to Echo. I've contemplated posting this because I still somewhat think of it as my kids special place that I can always take them to in a pinch with excitment.....without feeling bad. This is my 4 kids favorite place to go. My now 5 year old goes the most and generally jumps up and down, screaming in excitement when I tell her she is going. Echo has had a tremendous influence on her happiness and development.

My daughter who is your typical "cookie cutter student" and somewhat a quiet student did well, had a good experience and enjoyed the school because it was all about the social hour for her and making friends in a fun environment. The teacher did meet up with me one evening to tell me a concern regarding my daughter which by far was not a concern yet an opinion nor any of her business regarding my daughters love for dressing up for school. In the 2.5 years she was there however she only learned to somewhat write her name. My son was a completely different story. He attended the center for 2 years and does not know his alphabet nor can write his name. He has now been "let go" from the school due to the teacher stating he's be better off in a "smaller class size" as well as several other discussions of her opinions and observations regarding his behavior in which we've brought to the attention of his pediatrician, a kindergarten teacher, and a behavioral specialist all of which had agreed none of the described behavior had been concerning or unusual for that of a 4 year old BOY. Also coincidently, at the beginning of the year my email address somehow was not receiving the classes emails and I missed out on important dates such as "pajama day" and other fun days for the kids which lead me to drop off my son and run home to get his pajamas and run back to school so he wouldn't feel left out. We also had an issue in which my sons spot was taken on his scheduled day forcing me rearrange my work schedule to be able to accommodate my sons preschool schedule. (If you call this a preschool) Overall my most recent experience of this school is sadly negative. I'm still not sure if they are a daycare or a preschool because they'll claim to be both depending upon the situation the title is pertaining to. They play favoritism which I upsettingly have experienced and witnessed first hand. If you have a child that's is full of life, love and energy, then maybe this center is not for you!

At one point the…read moreschool changed name from Wayland Academy, when the faculty took over and became co-administrators. To summarize: in 6 to 7 years, our kids never said they did not want to go to school. The teachers are superb, it is a very multi-cultural community, the class sizes are small, allowing students to work at their own pace. Either they are super bright in math or need a little more time on reading, there is plenty of resources there to make learning a great experience. They do plenty of field trips and activities, get a great foundation in being good citizens. My kids now in middle school are kind leaders who can build efficient teams and rally good people around. Not only they learnt their curriculum at an advance level, but they mostly learnt to read people and make informative decisions about whom they want to be friends with and whom they do not. If you ask me, it is the most valuable skill ever. Thumbs up for the Brighton School in Framingham!

What I like best is its strong emphasis on social justice and engagement with society. Excellent academics with teachers readily available to help. They also address the social and emotional needs of the child. After-school clubs and sports, with students staying as late as 6 pm with no extra charge. My daughter is extremely happy there because of the small, family feeling ("everyone knows me!") and there are so many opportunities for such a small school: drama, art, music, sports, model UN, etc. As long as we get good financial aid and can make ends meet, she'll stay there. I'm sorry for the previous reviewer. I obviously don't know the details, but they do have rigorous academic standards. I haven't found them to be harsh, just serious.

The majority of the teachers have master degrees from Boston College and are excellent teachers. The staff and other educators are meticulously chosen and contribute to the school at the highest level. St. John School is only Catholic elementary school (Age 2 - 6th grade) in the heart of Boston proper and is conveniently located in the North End - and close to all major employers for parents to consider. Many families attend from East Boston, Medford, Revere, Saugus and many Boston neighborhoods. The students are out-performing BPS schools on MAP testing and exceptionally prepared for junior high. The 6th grade students interested in exam schools opt in to tutoring and prep for the fall exams and outperform their peers in many instances. The school community is bar none the best. Families have left SJS and returned because the community of teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, and extended family are exceptional. You cannot find this level of care and community anywhere else! This is also the most affordable private school option for many families who want to instill a Catholic education. All the students participate in what's called the Tower Garden. Ms. Shay created a hydroponic garden that is tended by each class over the course of the year. After the greens and veggies are harvested, they are hand delivered by students to different local non profit organizations like St. Anthony's Shrine and ABCD. Having the option of afterschool from 2:30 pm - 6pm plus a variety of enrichment classes and music lessons, makes this school even more attractive and special. Tours are provided by appointment all year round. And parents are always willing to share their experiences. I should note that a 2 year old program begins in September. That's in addition to the 2.9 yo program. Definitely check out the social media pages too. Facebook and instagram @stjohnschoolnorthend

The lack of safety, accountability, and proper supervision is alarming. The behavior in this school is out of control--there are constant fights, bullying, and students getting hurt, yet nothing is ever done. Incidents are repeatedly brushed under the rug. My son has been harmed multiple times since the beginning of the school year, and despite being a strong advocate, nothing has been done to protect him. The school claims to investigate, but there is never any follow-up or real action. A 7th grader was bullied so badly that students took a picture of him in the bathroom and spread it around--and still, nothing happened. Another student was body slammed outside, in front of two staff members, and was out of school for a week due to his injuries. Yet, no action was taken. Kids have to prepare themselves mentally, emotionally and physically to step foot in that school, which should not be the case. There is no sense of safety or respect in this school. The administration seems indifferent, and the well-being of students is clearly not a priority. Parents, be aware--this is not the safe, supportive environment they claim it to be. My son will not return to that school next year, and I have spoke to a good amount of parents that will be doing the same as well.
