We were on the waitlist during Covid to move our aging girls, one dog (15), one cat (17), to Mariposa. After a nightmare scenario at sprint hill vet where they vet didn't give two cents about our girls and their health issues that showed up later in life. I did my own research and we ended up here. We love our vet! It helps that I do my own research and we keep a strict schedule for the girls and know any changes in their health. They offer a more holistic approach and also revert to conventional if you think that helps your pets, but if you understand health for humans, real health, you'll find there is similarities for animals and this place helps guide you through it. We are on three more years with our dog who was in the ICU 3 years ago due to negligence of the vet at Spring Hill. They truly care about the animals at Mariposa, they take the time and give details when you ask. They are not authoritative and will listen to concerns. I also love that the animals are not put on a table, the vet goes to their level to ensure they are more comfortable. We are so happy we found this place and appreciate they care about our babies. When a vet's office takes a member of your family into the back--whether for a small procedure or a major one--you have to trust that the team will treat your pet with care, compassion, and respect. One of the best indicators of how they treat animals is how they treat the humans standing right in front of them. If the staff is rude, condescending, or aggressive, how can anyone feel confident that they'll be gentle and patient with an animal who can't speak up for themselves? I would strongly discourage anyone from bringing their pet to Mariposa. After several visits, we've decided that this clinic is not a good place for our pets. The vet does not inspire confidence in the care they provide, and the front desk staff is consistently unfriendly. Each time we walked in to pick up medications or purchase prescription food, we genuinely felt like a nuisance rather than valued clients. The overall environment is unwelcoming, which is the last thing you want when trusting someone with your furry family members. The quality of care is below average. Appointments rarely run on time, and we've often been asked to wait in the car for extended periods before being brought inside. Once in an exam room, the vet and technicians often appear uncomfortable and unsure, even with basic steps of the exam and treatment process. Unfortunately, our repeated experiences have made it clear that Mariposa is not the right clinic for us--or for our pets. read more

I was shocked and disappointed they would not schedule an appointment for a checkup on my 3 dogs and said I would be a "new" client due to not bringing them in which was because my parent was very very ill and I was busy caring for my parent. read more

So many positive reviews here are about when things go right, but I want to share a story about when things go wrong. My Gus, a Virginia opossum, developed a mass in her mouth about a month ago and I had a lot of questions as I searched for solutions - what is this thing, how can I get her medicated, who can competently treat her species? After a long and frustrating search, a friend tipped me off that Mariposa might be willing to help so I gave them a call. I was really worried as I booked the appointment (pretty sure there were tears involved) and a very empathetic staffer got me in. Thanks to Robin for her kindness! Very impressed with their onboarding and arrival process. Managing a stressed out animal while trying to fill out forms isn't fun so I appreciated the convenience of a digital intake form, completed in advance. The quiet check in was also really great - I imagine not having to walk your fur baby through a lobby filled with strange creatures and smells and sounds is probably beneficial for dogs, cats, and opossums alike. They're already stressed enough at the vet. I speak from experience when I say that if an opossum doesn't want you getting in her mouth, you're not getting in her mouth but Dr. Carrier examined her as well as he could. It looked bad but we talked about options - debulking, different antibiotics, etc. and he explained everything patiently and clearly. He and his team were so gentle, calm, and mindful with her. And Gus wasn't a great patient - squirmy meets stubborn meets scared - so that was a tall order. But then he got Gus on the table and sedated and he could look deeper and found that the problem was worse than we even thought. As soon as we all saw it, we just knew. It was no longer possible to help her without hurting her more than she already was and the impossible decision was made. Opossums are very stoic about pain and this particular mass was just too aggressive. I didn't know for sure until that moment though I imagined it was a likelihood - and still, I was devastated. Full on sobs in the office and I'd bet I disrupted operations for a minute or two. Here's the thing. We did everything we could, and I say we because I felt so included in the process. Though we didn't have the outcome we wanted, I'm so grateful to the whole Mariposa team for how compassionate they were with my Gus. During and after, they gave me plenty of time with her, made arrangements so simple, and really treated the whole process with honor and care. They also get mad props for how they handle traumatized fur mamas. They were willing to work with me, they listened extraordinarily well, explained everything clearly, and they gave a crappy situation their best shot. No one blinked at the tears, either, and Kleenex was freely offered up. As a result, I trusted them fully through the whole thing and I would recommend them to anyone! It's clear that the whole team loves animals and wants to do what is best for them at every step in the journey, even when what's best isn't what's easiest. I think it's important to tell the happy stories for sure, but it took seeing what Mariposa is capable of when the story isn't so sunny that really blew my mind. You often see the strength of a person or an organization's character more clearly when everything is on fire and I experienced that here. I don't review much any more but to paraphrase the great Sir Elton John - my review is my song and this one's for you, Mariposa. I'm so grateful for your help through a tough moment in time for me. I'm so hurt and disappointed with the lack of care we have received from this clinic. We have been loyal clients for 8 years and have taken our dogs, cats, birds, and bunnies here but the past year we have felt extremely dismissed and uncared for. I'm going to list just two examples for space; In January I called about our bunny who had just had a amputation surgery here and was struggling with eating and they got her in that morning, but she sat in a cage all day as I found out she didn't get forced fed until end of day when I picked her up by the technician. I get my bunny home and she dies within thirty minutes of being home!!! Why on earth would a vet send a bunny in this state home?! It was so traumatizing and heartbreaking. Yesterday, I call to get my elderly dog in to be seen who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and I let them know she had some vomiting. They refused to see her and told me I needed to go to an emergency vet. They know that we had her at an emergency vet the end of January for $5,000 for pancreatitis and we also lost our other dog to cancer at that time. They, as our long time vets, know all the grief and loss we've been through and it is ridiculous to expect us to take her to emergency vet for something they could help with. I called around town and Southside Animal Hospital in Olathe agreed to see her. They have never seen her before but wanted to help. They gave her fluids and did bloodwork and discovered she is in renal failure caused from the Lasix heart medication she has been on. Not once was I told of the side effects of this med or told we should be doing bloodwork to check on her kidneys. I had to be told by a total stranger that my dog had a week or less to live and euthanasia was her best option. Mariposa has dropped the ball in so many ways and I feel deeply disappointed, angered, and betrayed. I feel that both my sweet Luna bunny and now, my sweet Lulu dog lost their lives because of this place. I would avoid this place like a plague if you love your animals. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review! I saw four vets before Mariposa was able to solve my cat's severe food allergies. Every other vet told me to go on Science Diet, which is a horrible company with shady practices and nutritional gaps. I feed a raw diet and they were the first vet to work with me on that and not tell me to quit doing it. We did a non-invasive method and no injections to test for allergies. I was nervous because I didn't quite understand it but WOW they nailed it all! I have been able to feed my cat raw, and stay away from certain proteins for almost 4 years no with no flare-ups at all. My animals have been patients here for a few years now. We recently had to say good bye to our dog. They were kind, considerate,patient and respectful. We were sweetly surprised a week later when we received in the mail a paw print and a lock of her hair. Being a middle class income fami!y, cost was important,and they were the most reasonable. We've seen all the docs there and like them all. The staff has been there for a long tome, and that says something about their team. Highly reccomend them. read more

I'm sad to give this place only two stars. For years, my dog went to Dr. Runnels, and we thought she was great - very friendly, gave the appearance of being knowledgeable. But year after year, after year, we would ask about a growth on our dog's leg and if it could be cancer, and every single time she'd say that it wasn't and that it was just a normal skin thing small dogs would get. I asked why it was getting larger, why it seemed to be bothering my dog, and whether we should have it removed *every single time our dog went in*, and she said that it didn't matter if it got bigger and that she was confident it wasn't cancer. I was skeptical, and I even inquired several times about whether she thought they needed to do any tests on it, but ultimately I trusted her. Fast forward four (or five?) years, my dog started defecating massive amounts of blood so we took her into an emergency vet (different office), and as soon as they saw her growth they said that it needed a biopsy and that it was likely cancerous. They were right. It was a mast cell tumor, which they said is one of the most common forms of cancer in dogs, and they seemed surprised that our vet wouldn't have known this. Now the growth is nearly the size of a golf ball (on our 14-pound dog), and my dog is going to needlessly die because for several years she didn't get treatment. I like Dr. Runnels as a person, but what a heartbreaking, crushing experience. If she's not familiar with cancer in dogs, I feel like the least she could have done was refer us to a colleague. read more

I've taken my dogs here off and on for the last few years. The first dog I took here was my senior Rat Terrier named Jackie. She was very overweight due to prednisone use for allergies. Dr. Dodson recommended a grain-free, potato-free canned diet. It helped her allergies diminish and she lost a significant amount of weight, around eight pounds to be exact. They placed her on Four Marvels Powder as well which also helped decrease her allergies and helped her arthritis symptoms. Dr. Runnell's performed a dental on Jackie when she was about 15-years old, and it was the first dental done on one of my pets where she wasn't groggy for the rest of the day. When I picked her up, she was bright-eyed and bushy tailed. The dentals are expensive at Mariposa, but then I guess you get what you pay for. When my Jack Russell Terrier named Bella was attacked by my neighbor's dog, he tore a flap on her nose. Dr. Runnels got Bella in right away, stitched up her nose, and the nose healed well. No visible scar even though numerous people warned me her nose would never look the same. I have to hand it to Dr. Runnels on her stitch work. Dr. Runnels has also recently treated my other Jack Russell Terrier named Deta for other health concerns. She is always very thorough and responsive to patient questions. Believe me, there are a lot of incompetent vets out there. Compared to other vets I have been to in the area, Mariposa is hands down the best. I've been to others for convenience (e.g. right down the street), faster appointments (getting in for medical appointments can sometimes be hard unless it is an emergency), and cost savings, but I have found I am happier when I take my pets here. It gives me peace of mind. Their lab work is more comprehensive, their staff is extremely knowledgeable, they give patients more treatment options, and the environment is less stressful for my pets. It is one of the few clinics I have been to where my dogs don't incessantly shake while in the office. I have to give a big shout out to Cindy. She is hands down my favorite vet tech ever. So thank you for taking good care of my babies. read more

I cannot believe I haven't given Mariposa the props they deserve yet...I've been going there about a year and a half now. From the vet that I see, the techs, and even the other vets (can't always get into mine) I have never in my 20 years of having pets had such a great experience with a vet. They truly care, and it shows when they are with your pet and in the follow up they do. Past vets I've seen it was really just lip service, a business transaction. Not Mariposa. Another great thing is most (not all, if it's not your thing) are a mix of eastern and western medicine. So it isn't always "let's give them a drug, and another drug to fix what that one caused" etc. They want to get to the cause, the why, instead of fixing symptoms with a pill or a shot. Never experienced this with any other vet. I truly adore the folks there and will not go anywhere else. read more

I can't say enough great things about this Clinic! I called them in a panic to see if they would be able to get my sick little puppy in. I had an appointment at another veterinarian clinic but just couldn't bring myself to take him there again. Due to a cancellation, they were able to get me in right away! From the moment I walked in, I felt confident that my new fur baby was going to be taken care of! The vet, technician and staff were compassionate, knowledgeable, patient and professional. I felt Dr. Carrier was so thorough and helpful during my new parent worry. They were incredibly kind and made me feel like my pet was their favorite. Which he is pretty stinking cute! I am very disappointed and frustrated with the service at this clinic. I requested a special order bag of bird food in March. By April, it still had not arrived. I proceeded to request this special bag of bird food every month for 4 months in a row, being told each time that they were making a note for the orderer and would call me when it arrived. Eventually, I gave up. In August, I got a call stating my bag of food had arrived. Today, I paid for it over the phone and a friend was going to pick it up for me. When he arrived at the clinic, he found that between the time I paid for it and the time he arrived, it had been given to another customer, even though it had my name on it. I had to speak with a receptionist over the phone for a refund. She had to run my card twice for the refund as she initially forgot to refund the tax. She was then unable to print a receipt showing she actually ran the card for a refund, stating she would e-mail the receipt. I have yet to receive that email. Mariposa is the most disorganized and client un-friendly clinic I have ever been in. I am a registered vet tech in the state of KS and my boss would fire us if we had such poor client service! I will never again set foot in this clinic. read more

Mariposa deserves 10 stars. We transitioned our furkids' care to Dr. Runnels and we're incredibly pleased with their treatment. We have older dogs with health issues and the dogs and us as parents are always treated with kindness and professionalism. I love that Dr. Runnels is familiar with treatment options beyond the scope of mainstream veterinarian practice. I have no doubt some of these alternative and complementary treatments have extended the lives our our dogs while improving the quality of their time with us as well. All the staff at Mariposa are awesome. The prices are very reasonable. We will keep going to Mariposa as long as we live in the metro. read more

Mariposa is Spanish for butterlfly. I don't know the Spanish word for compassion, but that should also be part of Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center's name. Dr. Sheila Dodson and her team practically ooze compassion and empathy, and if you're a pet lover you can tell you're in good hands the minute you walk through the door. I've had my cats in for routine immunizations and wellness visits. I've also felt the heartbreak of taking my pet to Mariposa Veterinary only to learn that the doctor could do nothing for her due to a tumor that developed along her spine. Euthanizing a pet is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but the support my cat and I received from staff helped me make the best of a bad situation. Here's another wonderful thing about Mariposa Clinic. Every Saturday they open their doors to Kitty City Kansas Rescue, enabling the organization's volunteers to adopt out lots of rescued cats and kittens. It warms my heart to see homeless pets find a home, and I feel good about patronizing a business that lends a hand to make that happen. I adopted Kiko, the newest member of my cat family through this program, and you can bet when my beautiful Siamese needs check-ups or booster shots Mariposa Veterinary will be my clinic of choice. read more

My dog has allergies that often result in yeast infections in his ears and other irritation. We'd been to three or four other vets who said we'd just have to live with it. At Mariposa we figured out he's allergic to grain and since cutting it from his diet about 3 years ago it's so much easier to manage his general allergies. They take such good care of my dog and don't automatically think he needs muzzled because of his size-- we haven't had that experience everywhere. I recently moved to Lee's Summit and I will continue to make the drive out to Lenexa to take my dog here. read more

I wish I could leave a good review, but my experience with them has just been a rude phone call that deterred me from visiting them. Their initial appeal is that they are close to work and home, and open on Saturday's. I called in the evening and left a message so I wouldn't forget to call another day. I asked for some simple information and for the phone call to be returned. It was returned! However, the return voicemail was very rude and passive aggressively stated their hours and when I COULD call them. This voicemail also contained none of the information I requested. Why have a voicemail box if you're going to be rude to the people who leave messages? read more

The best experience I have ever had with a vet. My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma at a previous vet, but we came here to see what options were available. I walked in sad and terrified and left feeling supported and hopeful. They answered my questions at length and never made me feel rushed. My dog was comfortable and happy to receive the treats they provided to win him over! We will absolutely be transitioning to them. read more

Mariposa is wonderful. As a rabbit owner, it is difficult to find a vet with the desired knowledge of rabbits. Dr. Burcham is wonderful. She is so sweet and gentle with my pets and so nice to me. This was a great clinic years ago, but it changed dramatically and for the worse. We had a horrible experience there with one of our pets several years ago and they could have cared less. We came across Mariposa Veterinary by chance. Our regular vet was away on vacation and my teenagers 3 yr old guinea pig fell ill. The doctor came back to a private room to tell us her piggy was dying. Dr and desk staff were so compassionate as my teen was crying and upset. They even allowed her the chance for a final goodbye. I am leaving this review because 4 days later we received a card in the mail. Signed by the entire staff and included a small rock with her piggys footprint and name. Newest update: Dr. King is no longer there and I don't vibe well with the lady who replaced her. Her personality is abrasive and overwhelming. I also couldn't seem to get a word in edgewise. I still give the clinic an overall good rating, but since Dr. King left I will probably be taking my fur babies elsewhere mainly because the drive is over 30 mins. Best vet place ever! They have a naturopathic vet there, dr king, she has transformed my cat. It's pretty much the same price as a regular vet! Great staff, fast and convenient. read more

To say I love this vet clinic is putting it mildly. We've tried other clinics which were OK but Mariposa's team really goes above and beyond to make sure their fur-clients are healthy and happy. The staff is responsive but also listens well and is always thinking out of the box to help with any issue you may have. If they can't help they're happy to refer you to someone who can. This is not a vet center where you're in, get a prescription and get shoo'd out the door. The staff really take the time to get to the root of problems and fix the cause and the immediate symptoms. They're also great about well-check ups and routine issues. My dog is reactive to other dogs and the staff goes out of their way to help us help him when he's in for a visit. We always have a good experience and the staff really knows each individual client and can tailor treatment plans for each animal. They focus on diet, do Traditional Chinese Medicine and have other therapies available. Be prepared to answer lots of questions and consider things you might not have even known existed to help your pet. They're totally worth the drive from KCMO or other areas of the metro if you've got a complex case or just looking for the most thorough care. read more

After having allergic issues with our 3 yr old Springer Spaniel and no satisfaction from our vet, we tried Mariposa. The staff was extremely friendly and listened. They were truly concerned for the wellbeing of our dog. We had some testing done and found that not only is our dog allergic to corn, wheat and soy (which is what is eliminated in the grain free foods), she is also allergic to other minor grains in foods - rice, barley, oats, etc. Peas was also on her list. Almost all dog foods have peas in some form. Once we eliminated these she was back to doing great. Our other vet didn't suggest testing. Only suggested drugs which didn't work. Highly recommend Mariposa's staff and doctors. They are the best!! read more

Originally took my hamster in for a checkup for a wound on her back. I saw Dr. Carrier who was really friendly and was able to provide some good info and check her out well. I had a pretty long wait even though I made my appointment on time, but the whole staff was really friendly, and told me a not so nice cat was causing a delay. So I appreciated the update. However, I brought my newest addition, which was a 4 year old rescue crested gecko in for a check up and was a little disappointed. For someone who is supposed to be an exotic vet, he did not have very much knowledge on geckos. I asked what a healthy weight was for a male and female gecko, and he stated he did not know, he just looked at them and could tell if they "looked okay". I asked how much weight they should gain as juveniles so I could track her growth and the growth of my other 2 geckos, he said he didn't know. He tried to look in my geckos mouth and of course she didn't like that; he had a pretty hard time. After several tries he said everything in her mouth "looked okay", but there was no way he got a good look as she snapped her mouth shut too fast. He mentioned nothing about the calcium sacs in her mouth, which I was waiting for him to do since I know that's how you are able to check if geckos are getting enough calcium; that's how I know he did know look into her mouth properly. He asked what I fed my geckos and I listed the 2 most common food brands, he didn't know anything about them. They have different folders for different animals, that have basic care info. I was previously given one at my last visit because I mentioned I had just adopted a gecko. The doctor kept referring to it, but really did not provide any other info except for what was written in the folder...that I was previously given and had looked over. I payed $54 for a visit that did not provide much info and left me with unanswered questions. I ended up learning more about weight, growth and juvenile gecko care on Google on my own than I did at the office with a vet. I was really excited to find an exotic vet as I would like to breed geckos down the road, but I'm afraid my hatch-lings would be unable to get adequate care at this facility as due to lack of knowledge on geckos. My cat's vet is able to tell me what a healthy weight is for felines, I would expect a simple question like that to be answered by an exotic vet too. Everyone is really nice, no complaints on that. But I will not be bringing my other 2 geckos in. read more

Mariposa is one of the most kind, compassionate, and thorough vet that we have been to. They always explain everything to us with compassion. We recently brought our dog in who was very sick. They made sure to explain everything to us that was going on, and explained all possibilites that they were considering while being very kind. Our dog could not move his hind legs and the vets allowed us to lay him on a futon so that we could sit with him while they saw him. I have never felt such compassion and thoroughness. They ran blood work and a urinalisis; they dignosed the problem and he is beginning tio perk up. I highly recommend them! read more
