The Margaretenstraße is one of my favorite streets in Vienna. Walking it from where it takes over from the Operngasse all the way to Margaretenplatz is like walking through the neighborhoods of Vienna - at least the cool ones. There are varied shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, cinemas. At the beginning of it, you are in the trendy Freihaus Viertel ... it's trendy for a reason. Concluding at Margaretenplatz and the Pilgrimgasse, you have the awesome and charming Schlossquadrat at your disposal. The hard to find entrances of the Schlossquadrat (if you've never been there) add to its allure but inside you will find four great restaurants and three friendly and pretty "Schanigarten" (outdoor wine gardens). Of course, if you have been strolling on the Margaretenstraße to get here, there is a good chance you may have already stopped for some food and wine before you reach the Schlossquadrat in Margareten with the choices you will pass or see on the sidestreets. (Cafe Bakul is my favorite place en route for a bite to eat.) The 59A bus leaves from the Ringstrasse directly across from the Staatsoper (State Opera House) and does this route and when you reach Margaretenplatz and the Schlossquadrat, you are only two streets from the U4 underground line station - Pilgrimgasse. read more
