The Woodman although not reviewed on yelp has many reviews on other sites. Nearly all the reviews are bad and that's why we didn't eat here till yesterday. However we heard there was a new team in charge and decided to include them in our fact finding for the area after moving to Clayton Le Woods end of 2014. On arrival at the bar we were greeted by a nice young fella who offered to let me try both the real ale's they had on. I decided on a pint of Wainwright's which was very nice indeed. We said we would like to order some lunch so we were asked to choose a table and somebody would come to take the order. I like that I don't like all this order at the bar with a table number. So we had baguettes and chips, me tuna melt and Sharon chicken and bacon. Both served with a bowl of homemade chunky chips. We both enjoyed the food very much. Nice presentation, good quality and homemade. One check in by staff as we ate which is the right thing. We couldn't fault it. Nice beer, good grub, nice table by the real fire and 19 quid for lunch including a pint and a Bacardi and coke. I hope that the new team at the woodman keep it up all power to them.

I'll definitely stop here again the next time I'm around.

Was it worth the 3 hour journey from London (2-hr train ride, 1-hr by car) to make our reservation from 6-months earlier? Absolutely. Courses are small, but plenty. Staff are immensely courteous and thoughtful (they made a custom menu for our dietary needs and even had the chefs sign it before we left). And the setting couldn't be more idyllic. I'd suggest getting the wine pairing as it really completes the meal. Go ahead and stay the night as breakfast is included the next day. Just make sure to work out your travel from the train station to the restaurant. It really is out in the sticks.

Make sure to make a small detour to Kilburn to see The Kilburn White Horse which stands firmly in the hillside. The Black Swan is a beautiful picturesque old pub full of warmth and charm. Upon arrival you are welcomed into the bar area for aperitifs where a log fire crackles and glows. Make sure to notice the Robert Thompson mouse carved into the bar. Great selection of small batch gins - I enjoyed a glass of Sir Robin of Locksley from Sheffield with tonic. Amuse bouche are served here before moving upstairs to the restaurant. The Smoked Eel and Apple Tartlets were light and well balanced in their flavours whilst the Chicken Dumpling was rich, satisfying and would sit well on the finest of dim sum plates in Hong Kong. The restaurant is more modern in decoration with an "open kitchen" where some of the dishes are prepared with a clear artistic love and attention to detail. Service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Good selection of wines for most palates and wallets. I had the 10 course tasting menu which, at £85, felt like a bargain compared to the price of Michelin starred food in major cities. To start, a Mussel with Oyster Leaf canapé - so perfectly decorated that it felt wrong to eat it, but so tasty. Next up Langoustine with Caramelised Whey, served like a lollipop with a twig to hold it with - lovely textures and cooked to perfection. Venison Tartare followed - a small dish but rich in flavour and beautifully prepared and decorated. Sour Bread and Sour Butter was distinctive and a good filler in preparation for the main courses. The Monkfish with Asparagus and Onion, although delicious, was probably the weakest dish. The sauce tasted like heavy sweet soy sauce and was a bit overpowering in its saltiness for the delicate flavour of the fish. Still very enjoyable though. The Slowly Cooked Crapaudine Beetroot was the star of the menu. Cooked in beef fat (I believe), the beetroot takes on a heavier composition and is chewy and almost glutinous with all of the accompanying decorations providing broad and bold flavours. Absolutely fantastic! Scallop Cured with Rhubarb was another standout with the smoothness of the slightly charred scallops countering the tartness of the rhubarb, all tied together with a rich and balanced sauce. Herb-Fed Chicken with Wild Garlic from this Year and Last was another amazing creation with a blanket over the chicken in the form of a garlic leaf. The chicken was more warm than hot but extremely tasty. The first dessert was ice cream (or iced yoghurt?) Lollipops which were wonderfully innovative with their unique flavours. The Sheep's Milk with Douglas Fir Oil was also an memorable dessert with natural tastes of the season. The final dessert, served with coffee was Cake made from Artichoke, Chicory Root and Thyme. The combination worked well although the chicory root (?) was slightly bitter. A great end to a fantastic meal and experience. For most who visit The Black Swan at Oldstead, a significant journey will be involved but don't let that put you off...It's well worth the effort and will be one of those great food experiences.

    I booked a room for valentines day and the whole day was a nightmare. Turned up to be told there…read morewas 'no lights' then got to my room to discover there was actual no electricity at all (funnily enough though they were still able to use card machines and take contactless payments). Waited as we were told the electricity would be back on at half past 7 latest (bearing in mind this was about half past 4 we got there. Had to speak to manager and explained that it wasn't really okay and surely the least that she should be doing is offer us a complimentary drink while we couldn't use our rooms to which she eventually agreed after a debate. Went through to bar sat in total darkness had to request a candle (no one offered one) waited and checked with manager a few times to be still told repeatedly that it would be back on by half past 7 latest so ordered another drink and sat in bar as it was pointless going to room but as time went on started to feel like nothing was happening and they were still cooking with no extractor fan so the whole place was smokey so went to room and went for a little walk then came back and went to request a refund as the situation was not acceptable. Explained how I had already paid for an uber there and was going to have to then pay for a taxi back as didn't have any power in my phone so had to request a taxi be phoned which was another huge debate ( at this time the chef had to come out to tell the manager he couldnt keep cooking bevause it was breaching health and saftey regulations). During this process the manager started to cry in front of all the other customers which then caused a debate between myself and another couple who had just turned up. This then escalated to a point that I had a pint thrown in my face. I find it highly unprofessional how the situation was dealt with and the fact that the manager created more of an escalation by involving other customers who had just arrived. Tried ringing multiple times to no avail even though the power is back on. After I eventually managed to get a taxi out of the hellhole and I then was so flustered and worked up that I left my wallet in the taxi and I can't get in touch with the cab company because I don't even know which company the staff rang. This is beyond a joke I have emailed and called with absolutely no response the place is an absolute joke

It's a must for me on Sundays in summer. Easily found just off the A6, this complex of thatched hamlets making up the pub, restaurant and hotel rooms is remarkably peaceful and a real retreat to bygone times. I often find myself sampling the wine list during the afternoon, succumbing to the menu at dinnertime, slipping into a comfy chair in the bar and then booking a room for the night! Residents can also make the most of the 'nightclub' a bit of a locals night, but great fun in a rural way. The restaurant and pub menu is part of the 'Taste Lancashire' acceditation scheme, which guarentees local produce wherever possible, as well as high standards of service and hygiene. TIP - Make sure you book a room with a whirlpool bath - just don't have a blonde moment like me and go overboard on the complimentary bubble bath - not fun to clean up! Another tip is to check out when they hold their annual oyster festival - usually in early September.

Today I returned for dinner, having meant to come back for dinner ever since I enjoyed that first lunch visit by chance. I'm surprised it's not already on Yelp as it's not new either. It's over 1000 years old. Yes you read that right. The Black Horse is believed to be one of the oldest serving taverns in the country, and was the second pub in the country to be granted a license back in 1577. Every corner and beam exudes the feeling of a classic English pub/tavern. It's comfortable, cosy, and welcoming, with dark wooden furniture, a roaring fire, and warmly lit side rooms. It's everything you would want in a proper English pub. As I don't drink, we were here for dinner, and were greeted warmly and given menus. The staff are friendly and familiar, it's their business and their baby, and they want to make sure people enjoy their visit. The menu has recently been updated and has some fantastic sounding options, as well as periodical specials. On this occasion, we chose the starters of black pudding scotch egg, and garlic flatbread. We were surprised. It's a pub, so you don't quite expect the artistic and pleasant presentation of the black pudding scotch egg, which was beautifully tempting to look at, and perfectly cooked with a lovely soft yolk. The mustard sauce was creamy with a gentle kick. The garlic flatbread was subtle on the garlic side, but lusciously buttery and fresh. The staff checked on us now and then to make sure everything was ok, even the chef herself at one point. Very enjoyable indeed. For our mains, we chose the cheese and onion pie, and the fish and chips, two classics of British pub food! The best bit? The chef came out and asked how I'd like the side of bread and butter cut with my fish and chips! We all know why too... preference... do you just want bread? Chip butties? It's all dependant on that cut! It was nice to be asked! Both were again presented pleasantly. The pie was unctuously cheesy in a perfectly crispy pastry, not a soggy bottom in sight! The mash you could tell from the moment it was placed on the table was proper home made mash, and the comforting thick gravy provided was perfect for flooding the lot! Wonderful! The fish and chips were equally good. The mushy peas were nice, and the tartare sauce was particularly good, however my praise is mainly on the fish, which was outstanding! The quality of the fish alone was excellent, and the batter was crunchy, crispy, golden perfection! For dessert we chose the sticky toffee pudding (it's a classic!) and from the specials menu, the jam roly poly. Both with custard. We're Northern. The sticky toffee pudding was deliciously rich whilst being super light and fluffy! The smell of the jam roly poly slapped in the face as soon as it arrived, whisking me back to nostalgic childhood sunday dinners. The taste was amazing, not just in flavour, but the crust on the pudding was just right, with the occasional chewy crunchy bit. Bloody marvellous! I'd come again just that jam roly pudding! Basically The Black Horse is everything you want from a proper old English pub. It's established, cosy, warm, welcoming, and offers great drinks, excellent food, and a thoroughly pleasant atmosphere. Relax here, the staff is ready to make this luxury even better with whatever you need! Directions to many local hikes or hot coffee on the picnic tables. So much fun to have, there are gardens, strolls, patios and quiet libraries too. This is the most beautiful place I've ever stayed because I can get some rest, unwind and enjoy the great outdoors. Yesterday there was a local marathon- yes!- great runners charged past into the local town of Ambleside. Hikers and dog lovers are here too. National parks close by... what a get-away we are having!!

Brunch, lunch, dinner, and bar snacks are served at the Drunken Duck, and I'd only really recommend booking for dinner. The beer and cider are mostly local I believe. We did the curry bowl to share (vegetarian and VERY tasty - kind of wish I could get the recipe), scampi, fries, and tartare sauce (those fries are to die for!) and the lamb kofta, hummus, flatbread, and mint yoghurt (great for sharing and noshing). There's plenty of parking on the side of the inn. The inside is decorated beautifully (very insta-worthy), so maybe consider renting out for an event. And yes, you can bring your dog to dinner/drinks.
