If you're looking for an upscale atmosphere, this isn't your spot. If you're looking for authentic Thai food with beautiful presentation and (HELLO!) BYOB then welcome home. The tom yum soup was one of the spiciest things I've eaten, but so so good. Next time I would ask for a little less spice, but still loved it. The spring rolls are a must and I had to restrain myself from spooning the peanut and chilli dipping sauce that comes with them straight into my mouth. Disappointed. No scallops on menu and for what was to be a combined scallop + shrimp dish, they refused to reduce the price. Given that scallops are a pricy item, this didn't make sense. Staff: 3.8/5 - The guy who helped us today was very nice. It wasn't too busy, but he was the only one up front and still gave us very prompt service. He was polite and not too pushy with desert. He did mess up our order a tiny bit. When my boyfriend got the option of beef, chicken, or tofu, he ordered beef, but got chicken. Not a big deal though, service was still great. Atmosphere: 4/5 - It was quaint and posh looking. Gave the feel of a small-town diner, but with a slightly fancier feel. It was very quiet besides the other customers there talking. There was adequate lighting without seeming to dull. Menu: 3/5 - It was well organized. It had the appetizers, entrees, noodle dishes, rice dishes, etc. It was a bit simple for me though. They had descriptions of what the food was, and it was easy to read, there just weren't all too many options and it was maybe a slight bit too plain. Quality of food: 4/5 - It seems quite fresh. I did really enjoy that about this place. Everything seemed healthy and not processed. Even the sauce seemed like someone had made it by hand. Whether they did or not I don't know, but I had the Rama Spinach Peanut Curry, which had a lot of sprouts, but was delicious. Could have used some more spinach, It seemed like a lot at first, but went down in two bites. My boyfriend ordered the chili mint beef (got chicken) and it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely order it again if I didn't want to try other things on the menu first! Price: 3/5 - It is a bit expensive for not getting enough to have leftovers. Normally I manage to take home a box of goodies for later, but it did fill us up enough that we skipped dessert. It was $13.95 for my curry, and $12.95 for his Chili mint, but these dishes were some of the cheapest items on the menu (excluding the appetizers of course) Overall: 3.56/5 - I enjoyed this place quite a lot. I have to say, I love my neighborhood. It used to be a dingy little greasy hole with bad chairs and no people. Not anymore! Nice orange accents, fresh paint, new chairs. simple and clean. And busy! Luckily we got a table, as we were starved. To share we got the Mango Spring Rolls (super fresh and tasty) and the Crispy Squid. They both came with two different sauces, one of which was clear, like water. I asked what it was and she told me it was the sweet sauce. Thanks, but I asked what it was, not how it tastes! (it was sweet by the way, probably sugar water and fish sauce, per M's discerning palette) I got the Ginger Black Bean w/chicken, and the ginger was just subtle enough to enhance the entire dish. M got the Pad Kee Mow, which is just fun to say over and over again, and she liked it. It was beautifully plated with a banana leaf. J got the Chili Mint Chicken, and said it had some good heat. It took all my power to not eat the entire plate so that I would have something for lunch today. Maybe not the best thai in the twin cities, but a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I looked like a badass sitting in that built-in, wooden structure with tables and lime green cushions. I didn't look like a bad-ass trying to get in and out of that built-in, wooden structure, but I tried my best - step up on the wood, walk across, attempt to sit down in the hole (all whilst wearing a short skirt), enjoy food. The rewind that scene to imagine me getting out... gracefully. The atmosphere is cool, but I enjoy it's brother location - Chai Thai - when it comes to decor. The food is pretty much, if not, the same at Mango Thai as it is at Chai but the Selby neighborhood is much safer than Cedar Riverside. We hit Mango Thai last Saturday evening... All-in-all it was a pretty great experience. It's a very small, "New Yorky" kind of spot. There was some deep-thumpy house music as background which contributed to the coolish vibe. Many of the tables have canopy umbrellas over them which contributes to the intimacy of the room. The menu is well thought out and our server was very helpful in explaining the specials and assisting us in our choices of entrees. My only real comments here are that my dinner commented that his Pad Thai was "bland", and and that my Pad Kee Mow was much better and that he'd order that before he orders the Pad Thai. We didn't know that they didn't serve wine - but that didn't stop us. The server recommended that we dash down to Solo Vino (about two blocks away) and grab a bottle. So I did just that after we ordered our food. The upside of this arrangement is that Mango Thai does not have a corking fee (yay!). The down side is that it will really suck if you have to run down the street in January. The restaurant encourages you to do just that though - they'll even hold your table or food order while you make the errand. On a side note, PROPS to Solo Vino for helping pick out s stupendous Pinot Noir (Poppy)... I was back at the restaurant and opening the bottle less than ten minutes after I left the table. My only complaint of Mango Thai is that the kitchen seems to rely pretty heavily on mountainous portions of carrot threads to adorn everything. really, guys, you can ease up on the carrots just a little bit and have the same effect. Due to the size of Mango Thai, I would suggest trying to make a reservation before going. We got lucky walking in, but we saw a number of customers turned away because there just was no room at the inn - so to speak. We really liked Mango Thai and will be back. read more

Last week, I called in and placed an order for pickup. The phone service was unhelpful and a little rude. When I picked up the order, he wasn't any nicer... The food was OK at best, I was not super impressed. The Avocado-Mango rolls were really good, the massaman curry was good, everything else was just OK. I ask myself if I will go back, and I think about the poor service, the OK food, and I think I will not. In the future I will try one of the other Thai places around town. read more

Mango Thai plates consistently tasty thai food in a laid-back atmosphere. We've eaten our way through two-thirds of the menu and have yet to come across a dud. The pad thai is fresh and light, pad kee mow is bright and flavorful, and the crispy fried squid appetizer alone is worth a visit. Mango's servers are knowledgeable, attentive and pleasant. It can be a challenge to get a table during peak hours as the restaurant only houses a handful of tables, but staff does a good job of giving realistic wait times. The small size gives it a perfect neighborhoody feel. Their BYOB alcohol policy is a HUGE perk, and NO corking fees! Bring in a bottle of wine to share; I've even seen tables with 6-packs and hard liquor. The reasonable prices, consistent quality and cool vibe make Mango Thai one of St. Paul's best kept secrets. I tried the peanut curry chicken and while it was good it was not at all what I exspected. I thought it would taste like a regular thai curry with a hint of peanut but instead it was more like they just dumped a bunch of the peanut dipping sauce that comes with chicken satay on top of some cut up chicken and veggies. I do like that satay sauce though so it was good for a couple of bites but about half way through it was just too sweet to eat a whole dish of. Maybe I was just expecting something different so it didn't float my boat. I wouldn't order it again but I would come back to try something else here. My friend who brought me here had the chicken larb which she loved and has gotten before so maybe I'll try that one next time. Fantastic food, fantastic atmostphere. Everything was just wonderful! From the outisde it seems like any other dark little Thai place but as soon as you stepped through that door you are in the idyll of New York City! The decor is very SoHo. Now don't let all that pretty fool you, Mango's got some brains, and some good food, too. The food is not only beautifully presented but delicious to the taste. I had the Tofu Satay, five little tofu sticks with spicy peanut dip. Totally recommend. My accomplice had the Mango spring rolls, these aren't just the restaurants signature on the spring roll they actually have mango in them! Another delicious recommendation. but... *NOTE* there is shrimp in the Mango Spring roll so non-shrimp eaters take *NOTE* Finally dessert was Mango and Sticky rice, This was really good even though it is totally not mango season. The sticky rice was not the sweet sticky rice which I am used to but really tasted more of rice. It was a nice change not to have all that sugary taste overwhelm the mango. I really enjoyed this place because of how different it is from other restaurants. Being able to bring out own wine with no corking fee is amazing! I also loved the small, cozy, spa-like ambiance. It was zero degrees outside but our waiter was in Birkenstocks -- what a welcome sight in January. The food was excellent. This place is amazing. The decor has an "island feel" to it. Lots of bamboo. Very cute. The staff is extremely courteous and prompt. The food is just amazing. The presentation is beautiful. The taste? Out of this world. I've only been there twice, but it's already one of my new favorite restaurants. The only thing I wouldn't recommend so far is the iced Thai coffee. Mango Thai is a solid, tasty Thai food joint. The egg rolls are good, but not the best in Saint Paul (that honor goes to Pad Thai on Grand). Their Pad Kee Mao is very good, and one of the reasons we come here. (Its not available at some other places.) Their Pad Thai is solid, although one time I asked for it mild and it come back so spicy I couldn't eat it. They have creative, good desserts like the fried bananas with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream. The customer service is consistently friendly and prompt. It is a small space, but comfortable. Loved it! It's a small quaint place, decor is refreshing and welcoming. We made a reservation, which I would recommend. Even though it was crowded, we didn't feel rushed at all. Ill just break it down like this: small resteraunt. seating? cozy atmosphere: relaxed and chill pleasant soft lighting....easy vibes Food? I had the egg rolls, spring rolls and the garlic chicken. DAT FRIED BA NA NA with dessert.all very well done. Safe, easy going food that was kind to the pocket. the staff was serene and kundun like. life is good. Go here and eat something. No corking fee haha that in itself is reason enough to go if you ask me. No liquor lpermit means that you can and SHOULD bring anything. Easily recommended, no bad aspects all around. Easily my favorite thai place in the Twin Cities for their Panang Curry alone. Their Rama Spinach Peanut Curry is also fantastic. Fun fact - to have a full liquor license in the Twin Cities, an establishment has to have two bathrooms on the premises. Lucky for us, Mango Thai only has one so they are BYOB beer and wine. There menu isn't too expansive to be daunting nor are their prices prohibitively expensive but it certainly doesn't read like the laundry list you'll find at Applebee's. Portions are within reason and they always have a special that is reflective of the season. My only complaints are that for how delicious their sauces are, the chicken (the only meat I've had at Mango) is obviously added as an afterthought once the meal has been prepared. I'm also not particularly fond of their special spring rolls with mangos but appreciate the concept. read more

The food was okay, the atmosphere was awkward, the service was terrible. The place is very small so once we finally flagged down the host, he sent us to the bar next door while we waited....for 2 HOURS!!! I find it ironic that all I wanted once we FINALLY got seated was another drink., but I should have just stayed at the bar to get that; Mango Thai is too cheap to buy a liquor license and doesn't sell booze in the restaurant. It is BYOB, but If I wanted my own booze I would have stayed home... instead, I decided to go to a restaurant. We ordered the special of the night because it was highly recommended by our server. I mean super super recommended - I felt pressure to order it they way he wouldn't shut up about it. After we order, we overheard the waitstaff joke around with each other, "you got ANOTHER one?! What's your count at? Man, I've only got 3 specials tonight!" So it appears that he was just selling us the special so he could win a bet, not because he genuinely liked it. In the end - the scallop special was good, but nothing to brag about to an EXTREMELY hungry table that's been waiting for 2 hours. So in summary - the food was decent. Just the same as all other Thai restaurants. But the awkward layout, terrible service, and lack of booze force me to flee to the bar next door. read more

Mango Thai would get five stars if everything wasn't so painfully expensive. We're talking a decent percentage above your average more-upscale feeling urban thai restaurant. All I'm saying is I want the option to get a bowl of tom yum or tom kha soup for less than 14-15 dollars. Especially on a freezing MN winter night!! All I wanted was the soup but I was too indignant to pay 15 dollars for the tom kha soup so I ordered panang curry with chicken instead. The curry was excellent, and had a nice round flavor with a decent amount of spice, no American-spicing policy here. The restaurant is small and cute and the service was fine. I have to say that I could get Thai food of this caliber for less money though and I probably wouldn't seek Mango Thai again, especially if I'm in the mood for soup! read more

Love this place!!! It's tiny, but the food is fabulous!!! We usually make a reservation since the entire restaurant is probably only 7-10 tables... The food is honestly the best Thai food I've had in MN!! Service can be hit or miss though, so I wouldn't recommend eating here if you are in a hurry.... Also, they don't have a liquor license, so there is no beer/wine/etc. You used to be able to BYOB - but the City of St. Paul made them do away with that policy. read more

I can't believe this place has such a low rating. I visited Mango for lunch one Sunday so it was quite slow. After browsing the menu for a minute trying to find the beer selection, I was disappointed to find that they did not serve, BYO only. Normally this would've made for a unsatisfactory Thai meal, but it was okay because the food was phenomenal! I ordered the Pad Kee Mow, which was brilliant. Very fresh and full of flavor. I ordered it Thai hot, which exceeded my expectations of heat (which was a good thing). Almost difficult to eat without a beer. We also ordered the mango spring rolls which came with a little dish of what was probably the BEST PEANUT SAUCE EVER CREATED! I'm almost ashamed to admit I finished the rest with a spoon. For those of you who remember the days when you couldn't walk the street in the Selby Dale neighborhood without being murdered....it's pleasant to see a hidden jem like Mango Thai right on the corner of Dale and Selby. Better yet, it's the only establishment for miles that doesn't have a corking fee. Make it a BYOB night! Beer, Wine, Saki, Jack Daniels...who cares. One of my favorite things to do is bring a little extra and make sure to share with tables nearby who aren't privied to the fact that there is no liquor license. The food is satisfying. I've tried at least 3/4 of the menu including off menu specials, and with the exception of a few americanized dishes for those who don't really like thai - they are all exceptional. I recommend making a long night of it. Mango spring rolls, plenty of curries, and fried plantain desert are some of the best. Your server can help you find the best menu item for your taste. They'll make anything spicier if you ask. Downside is if you are a carnivore, even when asking for double meat...you'll be disappointed. Who cares though, make it up in liquid meat. Some of the best recurring specials include Seabass, Lobster, Red Curry served in a pumpkin, and other seafood specials. Service is top notch. The Staff and Owners are very friendly and make you feel at home. Prices are reasonable, especially because you'll be saving on liquor, and service is top notch. The establishment is cozy...you could bring a group of 25 and fill the place so make reservations if possible. read more

We went to Mango Thai on a blustery cold Sunday night. Our reservations were for 7 at 7:30. Upon arriving we were informed that our table had paid up, but were lingering. No problem. It happens. We hung tight and awkwardly lingered in the doorway. This went on for 20+ minutes. Still our table and a number of others weren't budging. Ten more minutes roll by and we are now so hungry that we have dived into the bowl of lollipops by the door. FINALLY they decide to push two tables together and seat us. You'd think after a wait like that we would have been comped a drink or appetizer. No such luck. Once seated the service was great and our food was tasty. We came to this place around 4:30 on a weekday so they were pretty much empty and the service was great. The reason I am giving 2 stars is that I think it's pretty hard for a Thai restaurant to mess up pad Thai but the pad Thai at this place was drowning in the chalky brown sauce. The curry I tried, the Panang, was spicy and tasted good. And another friend tried the mango sea bass which was quite nice, that is until we saw the bill where we saw the special was $28!!! Now I don't know about you, but if I am paying $28 for something I would expect the waiter to mention this, which he didn't while he was describing it and that my socks would be blown off by the dish which our friends wasn't. We've been ordering take-out here for several years and have had our share of issues. Nothing major worth complaining about till tonight. They left out 1 of the two dishes we ordered and the crab appetizer was over-cooked and tasteless. When we went back to pick up our entree they refused to do anything about it. The manager wouldn't even come out to talk with us directly. After two trips across town, an hour initial wait, terrible customer service, and no apology...we won't be back.
