The Hill Country campus is beautiful. I was greeted at the door with a handshake, a fist bump, and genuine eye contact. The worship space had the feel of a concert venue, and the music was excellent. I truly felt the power of worship in that moment. The message that morning also presented the gospel in a clear, thoughtful, and beautiful way. I'm grateful for the opportunity to worship with you. As a pastor currently on sabbatical, I've been visiting churches and paying close attention to how newcomers are received. Although the official greeters welcomed me, no one from the congregation introduced themselves or began a conversation. After the service, I even spent time near the "New Here" table, but still left feeling unnoticed. A church can offer excellent music, a strong message, and a beautiful campus, but a simple greeting can be just as powerful. "Hi, I'm Bob. I'm glad you're here" can make someone feel seen. That kind of personal hospitality is one reason Oceanside First Presbyterian Church became our church home. Thank you, Life Church Austin, for a meaningful worship experience. I hope your people will continue growing not only in attendance, but also in the simple ministry of noticing and welcoming others.

Decided to go to midnight Christmas mass at St. Martin de Porres for the first time. I have a special bond and love for St. Martin de Porres, the patron saint of Social Justice, interracial marriages, ethical vegetarian and healer of people and animals, but for some reason, had never gone to this church, probably because I kind of avoid dripping springs and highway 12 because people are so impatient if you are looking for an address on a busy road and I don't want to get run over or bullied by people in menacing big trucks. Anyway, the church is small and built more like a home than a church. The priest seemed kind and tried to turn the homily into a sunday school lesson trying to get the crowd to participate, which I liked. To be honest, however, I am so very very disappointed with changes in the mass. Just what the Catholic Church needed - to alienate more people. I grew up with the vatican II mass and loved that everyone knew the words and participated freely and with gusto. It is something that has made the church, even the Catholic church, with all of its many many many faults, home. The new Roman hierarchy has made sure that the people can no longer participate freely., making much of the mass in an incomprehensible Latin and adding ridiculous language and $20 words to common prayers. St. Martin of Porres, defender of the poor, would surely disapprove of disenfranchising the people like this. Shame on them. Shame also on the Catholic Church for fighting for shortening the statute of limitations on molestation claims so that people harmed by evil priests can not get justice or peace. Kudos to the priest who said Christmas eve mass for bringing up issues of helping the poor and charity. He seemed like a kind man. Not sure if I will go back though. I believe that it is ok to challenge your church. My 12 years of Catholic school taught me to be engaged and not to be complacent. Therefore I recommend a blog for all of you who are fed up.
