There's nothing to say except it would be a mistake to but try this place. Such a cute and cozy Cuban feel restaurant with great service and even better food. The wings are to die for. It's an appetizer but you get a great amount of wings with fries so it seems more like a meal. The arroz chaufa is light but crispy and not too salty. And the EMPANADAS!!! Out of this world. We've had the Shredded Chicken Empanada, Philly Cheesesteak Empanada, Mac & Cheese Empanada, Pastelon Empanada, and the Garlic Shrimp Empanadas and each of those were out of this world! My sister and I went here on Easter Sunday on a whim, not expecting much. To our surprise, the place was empty, maybe one other table and as time went on a party of 8+ arrived. This is my second time here; first I got empanadas that were greasy and empty. Anyway, I digress, I got the Los Tres Golpes and she got, The classic steak and eggs. She was happy with her steak except for the overcooked scrambled "fried" eggs. As for me, my eggs were also overcooked & scrambled (again, supposed to be fried). The mangú was hard, dry and inedible, the red onions that are typically soaked in vinegar were instead soaked in oil, overall, just not good. I can only speak for the few things I've had there, but that's enough for me not to want to go back. Absolutely delicious! The empanadas are huge and great to share, the Mexican street corn one is a great vegetarian option. My absolute favorite dish, and it holds up for delivery too, is the Pacific Cod in Coconut Sauce. It has a little sweetness and spice and it's the perfect sauce. Food came half-hour late, no phone call, no apology, nothing! Of course, it was cold. My first time at Mambo for an early dinner. The place is small and quaint. Service was very pleasant. It definitely took a while to get our food, longer than expected given we were the only ones there. But I can look past that because the food was delicious. My Mom order the chicken sliders, which were very tasty. I had a beef empanada, which was amazing. Order 6 to go! I will definitely be going back again to try more dishes. My personal favorite was the Mexican street corn because it contained fresh corn, cotija cheese, lime, cilantro, jalapeno, and chili powder. This is also the house special! Many flavor profiles in one empanada, and the delicious filling pops open as soon as you take a bite. The spinach and mozzarella cheese was filled with fresh spinach and gooey mozzarella cheese. The spinach was cooked with Peruvian seasoning. Lastly, the macaroni and cheese empanada is precisely how it sounds. The Mac and Cheese was cooked perfectly and not too oily. Sister restaurant to the popular, Mambo Tea House, also in Rutherford, this place is a hidden gem. Stopped in to pick up their special "$7.00 Meal Deal" for lunch and the food was delicious. I had the "Mambo Strip Steak", strip top sirloin steak sautéed with peppers, onions in a Peruvian saltado sauce. The meat was tender and the saltado sauce gave it amazing flavor. You get to choose 2 sides and on this occasion I chose French fries and sweet plantains. The whole meal was delicious. My wife had the "Mambo Pernil", shredded pork marinated in a citrus mojo. This was my wife's first time trying the food here and after this meal, she can't wait to come back. She loved the pernil which was simple and flavorful as well as the fries and sweet plantains that came with it. Also want to mention our food was ready when we came to pick it up and the service was friendly. Overall just a great experience. One of my comfort foods is Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, and Mambo Empanadas served up exactly what I needed. I actually ended up getting the appetizer portion, which was the ideal size for my appetite- especially along with my sides. My favorite way to eat this dish is to mix it in with yellow rice, which is what I did right after taking these pictures. My sautéed vegetables were cooked perfectly as well. She said she reviewed my order and saw I didn't leave a tip for the driver and wanted to know if I made a mistake and wanted to know if I wanted add the tip. Service was excellent, we went today Tuesday night and our server gave us recommendations and they were great. I came in for the chicken soup but had the Lomo Saltado. My Collegue Aldo had the same. We were very happy, it was a hangar steak so it was soft and moist, not chewy like some places. Served with their home made green spicy sauce, I believe they put a little avocado in it. We loved it! Had the Nutella empanada, that was okay, too rich but we will definitely go back for the chicken soup or Lomo Saltado. This would be a 5 review instead of a 4 but I had half plate of Lomo left over and asked for my left over sauce to go... they said they would give me a new one. I'm just gonna get right to it. This place gets the job done but it's nothing out of this world. The place is small and I'm not crazy about the location. There's no parking and the off street parking that is offered is metered. Thankfully, I went on a Sunday so that helped but the street parking I could imagine gets unbearable on a Saturday night. The aesthetic is quite nice. Modern rustic look, with subtle Caribbean/ tropical decorative undertones. It's nicely executed. There's only a handful of tables for dine-in, so don't count on finding a table during peak hours or plan to wait a bit. Food is okay. The menu is filled with both Cuban and Peruvian dishes. Many options which is nice. We tried their empanadas, the chicharron appetizer, and for entrees, we had the rotisserie half chicken with the chaufa rice and the mofongo with the garlic chicken. Overall, it's not bad, it's just that I can't justify the prices for "just okay" food. The rotisserie chicken was awful. Bland, dry, overcooked, and small. The chaufa rice was equally as flavorless. No salt, zero flavor. It's very disappointing. I've had some amazing Peruvian rotisserie chickens and chaufa rice and I can tell you that the worst one that I've had in those other places is better than the chicken & chaufa in this joint. The showstopper was definitely the mofongo. In contrast to the rotisserie chicken, this was bursting with flavor! The mofongo was moist, packed a punch in the flavor category, and was elevated to another level with the garlic chicken that came with it. The sauce of the chicken perfectly complimented the mofongo and kept it nice and moist so each bite you got was flavorful. The empanadas were okay. They definitely didn't blow me away but they were decent enough. I really liked the Philly empanada. I also tried the shrimp empanada. Skip it. The shrimp was supposed to be garlic shrimp and let me tell you, there was nothing "garlic" about the garlic shrimp. Bland and flavorless. This stung cuz it wasn't cheap. The chicharron app I really enjoyed. The pieces of pork were aplenty and the tostones were nice and thin. It came accompanied by one of the best garlic aiolis you could ever have and a spicy green sauce, which was also exemplary but compared to the aioli, it wasn't as good. Lastly, I had a big issue with the service. It's terrible. The servers were nice, but the pace was painstakingly slow. We just had water for beverages and our glasses remained empty for most of the night. We always had to tag someone down to fill the glass. This is very off putting because we didn't have any specialty drinks so our glasses needed constant refilling. They should offer a pitcher for the tables. There's only like 8 tables so this wouldn't be too far fetched of an idea. I think it was a nice overall experience but for me, I don't think I'd venture out there again. We just happened upon this place and it is such a gem! They have a variety of both sweet and savory empanadas, and dishes from all over Latin America, ranging from Peruvian ceviche to some delicious Caribbean stews. We decided to get some of the specialty empanadas they had on the menu: one of chipotle pork and the other was pastelon. Both were amazing but the sweet plantains in the pastelon made it an instant hit for me, I hope they add it to their regular menu!! We also got an apple pie empanada, and a guava and cheese. Both of these were perfect for satisfying any sweet tooth. Since it was a rainy, cold December day, we also decided to get a bowl of Sancocho to split. If you haven't had this before, it's the most amazing Dominican stew, really hearty and filling! The meat was so tender and the yuca was probably my favorite part. I've ordered delivery a few times in the past, and the food was always great!! I ordered delivery again recently for my mom and I while I visited from NY, and the delivery driver ended up going to the wrong location. I had to leave to catch my bus home, so unfortunately I couldn't wait for the driver to come with the food. It was disappointing in the moment of course, but the staff was incredibly apologetic. I work in the service industry myself, so I know shit happens sometimes so it was ok! I was of course reimbursed through DoorDash, and the next day I got a call and voicemail from EJ (who I believe is the manager) telling me he wanted to make it up to us, which was incredibly kind and unexpected!! I was visiting home the following week and made it to the restaurant with my mom and sister, and the food was delicious!! I always get the 1/4 chicken with two sides, this time with black bean and chaufa - it was all so good! My fam loved their food as well. Really nice portions for the price, even through delivery. It's small but cute inside, and they have a nice little outdoor area too. The service was great, and at the end of our meal our waitress gave us a gift card from EJ, which was also incredibly unexpected!! With no doubt Mambo Empanadas has great food. I personally love the empanada de pastelon and the trifongo with pernil. Mambo definitely has logistics issues with their delivery and curb side pick-up orders; from missing items to wrong orders being delivered. Personally, I am an advocate of supporting local small businesses but also will call out the bad service. On 9/26/2020, my phone order, which I picked up, was very unsatisfactory. I was missing food and given mix dishes for example I got a mofongo with pernil instead of trifongo with pernil. Also, instead of getting mofongo I got white rice and beans with the churasco. I am almost certain their delivery service is affecting their curb side pickup service which results in poor logistics. Obviously their seated customer have priority. I've seen this exact issue with El Sabroso in Jersey City Heights on Central Avenue that when they started doing delivery quality went downhill. The way El Sabroso rectified the issue was terminating their delivery service. High volume delivery only works with fast foods not authentic dishes. Please work on your curb side orders because this is the 3rd time I have a bad experience with your delivery + curb side orders. read more
