I ate here today for the first time and the food and service were excellent! The food was flavorful, fresh, and hot. I ordered the Curry Vegetables with Brown Rice. It was so delicious and I loved the variety of vegetables used. There was okra and eggplant among the typical vegetables which elevated the dish for me. Looking forward to my next visit. Update: I revisited this establishment for a takeout order. The food was again hot, fresh and delicious. However, the waiter at the door has poor manners and customer service. I entered the restaurant to pickup my order. He says nothing and just looks at me. I greeted him and stated the purpose of my visit. He then asks me my name then retrieved my order. He says nothing after that...no thank you or nothing. This is especially problematic given I left a tip along with paying a convenience fee when I placed my order online. I do recall this guy at my initial visit to the restaurant. I remember him walking over to my table and tossing the menu over. I didn't mention his poor behavior because I had no interaction with him for the remainder of my visit. A polite young lady provided me with excellent customer service during my visit so I kind of forget about this guy. I'm not sure if it is a cultural difference or if he is just a jerk. Either way the restaurant needs to address his behavior if you desire my business. read more

I just moved to NC from Brooklyn. I am so excited to have found this place. I have been craving for home-cooked South East Asian meals and this completely does it for me. The Char-Kway-Tiao (however you spelt it) was as authentic as it can be. I also ordered the Laksa, gravy is a little light but still one of the better ones I had. I can't believe that I have not reviewed this restaurant yet. Our family regularly eats here. At least once a month if not every two weeks. Everyone in my family has a favorite dish. Fantastic! Got take out today : beef rendang, curry laksa with chicken and the chow fun with chicken , oh and a side order of hainese rice. This simple hole-in-the-wall Asian joint is, in my opinion, the BEST Asian restaurant in Charlotte. They offer delicious authentic meals you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else, alongside classic American-Chinese dishes that they knock out of the park such as Seseame Chicken, Fried Rice, etc. My family and I have been regular customers at Malaya for as long as I can remember, because of excellent service and food. My only complaint would be that parking can be a nightmare in the Arboretum sometimes, but hustling for a spot is completely worth it. This restaurant is a MUST try. I'd highly recommend the Seseame Chicken (best I've ever had), and the Tom Yom Soup (if you like some heat- if not try the Seafood Tofu Soup). I always want to not like this place because it's in the Arboretum. That's one of my least favorite places in Charlotte. But each and every time my dishes have been on point the flavors always made my taste buds tingle and I have left satisfied. It's a strange mix of items on the menu and it all seems to work. In the winter time one of my go to's is the duck soup. Each time I try to eat something different and each time I have left pleased. The service is always good nothing over-the-top like a lot of Asian restaurants, but always good and worth my time. Thumbs up guys keep up the good work. read more

I was pretty DEVASTED when Cuisine Malaysia closed down. Where else was I supposed to get my Beef Rendang and Roti Canai?? Luckily, a little sign on the door led me to its sister restaurant (aka Malaya Kitchen aka heaven). I quickly looked up Malaya Kitchen on yelp (of course) and that's where the adventure began! I had a couple of foodie friends in town and this was the perfect opportunity to try it out. foodie friends + late lunch + first time = family style! We ordered (takes a deep breathe) roti canai (malaysian crispy pancake and curry to dip), beef rendang (malaysian staple: tender beef pieces marinated in exotic spices and coconut), sarang burong (ring shaped fried taro topped with shrimp, chicken and veggies in brown sauce), curry laksa (egg and rice noodles in coconut milk curry) and mee goreng (stir fry egg noodle in red mild sauce with mixed veggies). Rarely does this happen, but I literally recommend EVERYTHING that we ate. Craziest part? Dare I say I enjoy Malaya Kitchen more than I've ever enjoyed Cuisine Malaysia (I KNOW, I'm sorry!). On this visit, we had the chicken satay for an appetizer and thought that the peanut sauce was pretty standard. 3.5 stars. I wasn't feeling very adventuresome when it came time to order dinner, so I just got an order of chicken pad thai. It was good, but not the best pad thai I've ever had. 3 stars. (Locally, I prefer the Thai House or Thai Orchid for this dish.) David had the coconut shrimp, which is breaded and served with your choice of brown or white rice. It also comes with a side of veggies - broccoli, carrots, etc. The veggies were lightly sauteed and not overcooked. His was definitely the more exciting of the two dishes, visually as well as in terms of taste. 5 stars. I would definitely like to come back and try this place again. I have heard that they have other dishes that are not available on the "standard menu" and I will definitely ask about that on my next visit! Service was fast and efficient. 4 stars. I thought the prices were average - appetizers ranged in price from $2.95 - 7.95. As for the entrees, you can find a lot of options in the $9 - $13 range, but they have several specialty dishes that run between $14- $18 each - certainly reasonable prices for dinner. read more

We shared the crispy duck, mee goreng, and char kway teow. My husband gobbled up the crispy duck, and my one year old enjoyed it too! The two-star rating is for the food only. This is really Chinese stir-fry disguised as Malaysian food. The vegetables are mushy and the food is oily. Some of the spices are in there, but not all, so your beef rendang will not taste like it should. It tastes okay--it's not bad, but it's more like a stir-fry imitation of what the dish should be, not the original, and it shows. The servers were friendly, the place is clean, the prices seem fair, the location is convenient with lots of parking, and we were waited on promptly. No complaints. The decor is standard to any Chinese restaurant. And they have a nice-sized bar in there, which is good. People in the restaurant business are on their feet all day and work really hard, so I don't like to leave less-than-positive reviews. This place has become one of our top 3 neighborhood restaurants thanks to authenticity, generous portions and eclectic Asian menu. Offer Indian curry dishes and variety of Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai dishes featuring noodles. We dropped in for second visit on Valentine's Day. While there was a 15-minute wait, we took seats at the counter with a great m view of bustling kitchen and were served immediately. I ordered first roti dish on menu with chicken and it must have had half a pound of breast meat in it. I like that you can choose protein for most dishes. I'm no connoisseur of Asian cuisine, but this place appears to be popular with local Expatriate community, which tells me that it's serving authentic Asian cuisine. But here it wasn't as flaky or like I have had it before. The rest of the food is decent, not something to rave about. We had a craving for Pad Thai and this was on our way to somewhere we were headed. Service was friendly and fast but the Pad Thai was awful. First they do not use flat rice noodles, and the ones they use are very though and mushy. Second, they're sauce is clearly tomato based and tasted like a spicy Italian dish.
