    Bone broth

Came here for dinner and was surprised that the place was packed. Recently I've been obsessed with these build your own mama pot restaurants. I'm so glad this place opened up in UWS. I also think it's interesting that this is one of the only restaurants that also serve a dry mala pot, although I would say that the dry version of the pot seemed to just be the ingredients stir fried in a little amount of soupy sauce. I appreciate the wide variety of ingredients they have although the labeling could've been better. I will say that YGF Malatang in Union Square probably had more ingredient options compared to this one. The soup was also great, very rich and flavorful. My one small complaint is that the soup itself was pretty salty and you really didn't need more sauce to go with it. Overall, its a good fast eat and one that will satisfy your soup cravings.

This store services delicious, mala food. Came on a weekday night before 6pm and there were multiple empty table available (note: we also came during the spring break week of Columbia University). This store allows you to pick out any ingredient you want and they cook it for you. The ingredients include various meat (including beef, lamb, squid, shrimps, etc), vegetables, noodles. The price ($15.99/lb of ingredients), ingredient quality, and various broths/cooking option (including soup vs stir fry) make this the most competitive mala place in Morningside, if not in Manhattan. My huge bowl of bone broth noodle soup came out to ~$17! I finished it all and can't wait to come back again.

I'd highly recommend eating here since their to-go orders may get cold. It's serve yourself/make-your-own bowl here, and they charge by the pound; they'll make the soup and it bring it to you when it's ready (about 5-10min). Medium spicy for their beef broth has got some fair heat. Seats aren't always easy to come by, and the restaurant only has seats for about 20 people, so it can get crowded. It's very easy to over-order, so try to check all the offerings before you start loading your bowls. Mine was about 2lbs ($30) when I realized how much food I had (thankfully, it was about 2-3 meals worth, so I brought it home). Large takeout containers are $1, just FYI. If you're doing takeout, try to avoid cheaper ingredients that you could add yourself (e.g. ramen noodles) to save on cost and poundage, especially since the noodles will get soggy on the trip home anyway. Same mentality if you can't finish your meal and wanna take leftovers (as in eat the noodles first since they'll get soggy). Broth was delicious and the ingredients are fairly fresh and tasty. For myself, I shouldn't have added so many sausages, but I liked the filled fish balls and fish tofu. Anyway, I'd definitely go back!

I really enjoyed my takeout from Mala town. There were a lot of ingredient options, I really liked the hot pot wide noodles and the variety of tofu they had. I had a dry pot and a hot pot and both were good. The medium spicy was a little too spicy for me so I'll have to go with mild next time. This will be a go to spot for me!

This place is quickly becoming one of my favorite. I love the ability to pick what ingredients we want by ourselves and choose a variety of seasoning and broth/dry option. Food was very good, spice level was not bad (I chose the max spicy and it has a punch but tolerable), it's perfect for cold nights. Prices are very reasonable, especially compare to their competitor. Also love that they have extra sauces and garnishes on the side. Service was also very quick. It can get crowded around dinner time and tables get snatched up quickly. I witnessed some verbal fighting about tables because it's first come first serve. I would suggest coming in earlier than 6pm to have a good chance for a table or get take out.

So glad this place opened up in the neighborhood! They do single-serve hotpot. When you enter you can just grab a bowl and tongs and fill up your bowl with ingredients ($14.99 per pound), weigh your bowl by the register, and pick one of their soup bases and specify your spice level. My bowl ended up being around 1.1 pounds, and I got the mala dry hotpot (medium spice). Medium spice wasn't too spicy for me, and I really liked the dry pot! I also tried my friend's beef bone broth, which was really good and I'd definitely come back and get it next time.

    Satay Dry Pot Mix

This is my first mala-tang experience, and the experience is fun! Their mala-tang is so delicious that I felt like I was introduced to a whole new world. As summer approaches, I strongly recommend getting their satay dry pot mix. It is a brothless satay sauce, packed with sweet and salty peanut flavor. A summer option for those who don't want to eat hotpot while wiping the sweat away. They also offer a variety of soup base, including their bestselling beef bone soup, tom yum soup and tomato soup. For the ingredients, I enjoyed the lucky bag -- it was stuffed with actual shrimp and shrimp paste. Their beef and pork are of high quality and they replace the meat with new batches regularly. You can even get abalone and mussels from the seafood section! We picked mild spicy for all the bowls, which was too mild for us and we will def go for medium next time. You can also add more spice later if it's not enough. Here are 4 easy steps to customize your own mala-tang: 1. Pick the hot pot ingredients, including meat, seafood, tofu, fishballs, veggies and noodles. 2. Weight your bowl. You are charged based on the weight ($14.99/lb). 3. Choose your broth and spice level. 4. Make your own sauce at the sauce bar. As a self-service casual spot, their staff are really friendly and helpful, and the environment is clean.

Im so glad we came here. It Exceeded my expectations. You are so close to Mount Sinai hospital, Columbia University, Barnard College and the Cathedral of Saint John the divine. Its quick and affordable and delicious. You can eat vegetarian, paleo or any way you like. Wagu beef or pea shoots are plentiful. I got the dry hot pot extra spicy and the beef bone broth. Phenomenal. The Beijing yogurt delicious and taro tea good. 10 star service too.

I love eating hotpot regardless of the weather especially since there's either dry or soup hotpot! The staff was friendly and helpful. This is a great laidback spot for a hangout with friends! At Mala Town you can build your own hotpot by adding all the ingredients you want into a bowl which is weighed (with the bowl weight already deducted) and the price is calculated by $14.99/pound. our 2 bowls weighed 1.57lbs and 2.03lbs, and it was enough food for us! Then you can pick your soup base/ flavor. I got the mild spice bone broth soup and mild savory dry mix - both were delicious! They have your typical hotpot ingredients like fish balls, meats, noodles, veggies and also cute ones like money bags stuffed with meat and paw shaped fish balls! the beef bone broth was really good - umami! The dry hotpot (savory dry mix) was also fantastic, I loved it with the wide noodles! We got mild spice for both but the dry hotpot def had more heat which was fantastic.

What would you put in your bowl? The combinations are endless at Mala Town with so many different types of meat, fish and veggies all weighed by the pound! There are 5 different bases (Beef Bone Broth, Dry Hot Pot, Tom Yum Soup, Tomato Flavored Broth and Chicken Broth) to cook all of the fresh ingredients you pick out! You pick out your ingredients and everything is cooked in the back. Casual but nice place! Service was super fast! There is a sauce bar as well to further customize your hotpot bowl! Mala Town is a great option for easy and fast hot pot in NYC! Insta: @thehungrysw

    Dry spice hot pot

Mala Town is great for the price! If you don't eat a ton of food, the $15.99 per lb price isn't bad at all. I thought it was a great portion for $15! Lots of good options for vegetarians, meat eaters, etc.! The mild savory dry spice was still pretty spicy to me but I don't have a super high spice tolerance. Still great flavor! Definitely recommend to get your hotpot fix in Upper West Side!

    Brandon K.

Small restaurant without that much seating, but the atmosphere was nice and the food was delicious. My friends and I all opted for the dry pot option (as opposed to the various broth offerings) and I loaded my bowl up with a wide variety of ingredients - have a good mix of noodle options, seafood, vegetables, and meat. Would recommend and would go back.

Came here with two other friends for dinner and we pigged out. We started off with Scallion Pancake with Shredded Duck ($15), which tasted amazing. The pancake was flaky and not overly soaked in oil, while the duck meat enhanced the taste. I think everything should order this for the table. We also got the Dan Dan Noodles w Minced Pork ($8), which is a staple dish in Sichuan cuisine. Make sure you stir the bowl to mix the sauce and minced pork. For veggies, we got the Sautéed Green Beans With Eggplant ($18), which tasted great. I usually get sautéed pea shoots for a veggie dish, but this was worth ordering as the eggplant tasted great along with the green beans. For entrees, we got the Spicy Green Pepper Fish Filet ($28 for filet). A classic Cantonese dish that comes with bok choy, so it turns out I didn't really need to order a veggie dish. Delicious. We also tried the OOHU Mao Xue Wang ($34), which may be one of the most spiciest dish available on the menu. This dish combines blood curd from a duck, tripe, and chicken gizzards along with other organs into a simmered broth containing chilis and peppercorns. They also use spam, vermicelli noodles, mushroom, and other things. If you're adventurous and you like spicy, I would recommend this. Best eaten with a cup of rice. Service is great as our server made good recommends and was overall friendly. They also have a party room you can book, which sounded pretty affordable. Don't recall what their minimum spend was, but it was super reasonable compared to a lot of other spots in Chinatown and Flushing.

Overall, decent spot and good for large groups. Otherwise, I didn't find this spot to be too memorable (not bad, not great).
