I tried this for a lunch on my own a few days ago. I noticed that their lunch bento was $15, and thought that was a pretty decent price for that. It came with miso soup, which was really tasty and light. There was a very large serving of really good salad and an orange wedge, which I haven't often seen at sushi places where I'm from. While I was thrilled with the salad, I was confused by the whole side of rice I got (saved it for later), and the sushi wasn't great. I ordered the California roll and mixed sushi option for my bento. The mixed sushi was very small and not remarkable in any way. The California roll was immensely disappointing with only surimi, not the cucumber and avocado as I'm used to (things called "California" anything should have avocado, imo). Also, the wait was long and they were not communicative about why since there were few people there. All in all, I really liked the salad so I might try this location again and update my review, but it's a sushi place, not a salad place. read more

The sushi and rolls, although good in taste, it was really nothing different or outstanding to say, "I have to come back again". I do agree with some of the other reviews about the prices being a little higher than most other local sushi places for the similar taste, sizes, quality and ambiance. Sipped on great cocktails at Lost Inferno (downstairs) for an hour until we got a table at Maizuru. Good vibe and ambiance. The hand rolls are really mini hand rolls (1-2 bites and they are gone) but reasonable priced at $7-8 a piece. But they are melt in your mouth good. I wish Yelp allowed half stars because I would give them 3.5 stars. The food was ok for what it is. The salmon was a bit rubbery and not really fresh. It's more of a roll or bento box kind of spot not for sashimi or nigiri and has the Korean owned Japanese type of feel to it. The Ambiance was really casual nothing special. They could stand to update their menus a bit the pictures were kind of pixelated looking I relied on Yelp images instead to decide. Service was pretty good and parking was easy. Can't say the food was very cheap for what it is. The spicy tuna crispy rice was ok not spicy at all and too much rice to tuna ratio. We got the bento box with tempura, nigiri, and a salmon collar. The tempura was really oily and not crispy enough. The nigiri was ok but again they're more of a roll place. We also ordered the Albacore roll which tasted like what it does elsewhere. If you like cooked items and rolls like crunchy rolls etc this place is decent but if you're looking for authentic or fresh (which tends to be more expensive) I can't say this is the place for you. Best rolls and bento boxes ever! The portions are generous and the rice is like heaven on the sushi rolls. Even when it was soaked in sauce, after I got it to go, the rice was still beautifully intact and had great flavor and texture. Ordered garlic albacore roll and Irvine roll and loved flavor and portion! The sashimi in the bento box was thick and fresh. The spring mix was fresh and the dressing was light and delicious. What was most unexpected was... the sesame chicken! It's so yummy. It's crispy and tangy and savory. I've been hitting up all the local sushi joints in Irvine and so far, Maizuru has the top seat as far as bento boxes go. 2 item bento for dinner $16. Add one more item for $2 more. What makes their bento stand out is the variety of items you can choose from. You have your standards like sesame chicken, mixed tempura, teriyaki beef/chicken, sashimi, sushi. Not so common at other establishments: crispy (big!) scallop, crispy oysters, seafood kushiyaki (grilled teriyaki skewers), calamari steak. During this pandemic, not a lot of places you can go especially places for satisfying your hungry tummy. Luckily, there is one place that you can visit if you are in Irvine area. This place is called Maizuru. Sushi place. Not just sushi, the have many more delicious and exciting menu such as: grills, teppanyaki or izakayas menu. One of my fav dish will be the: Crunchy dragon roll. It is a roll that consists of: crab meat, cucumber, avocado and shrimp tempura inside. And the topped with spicy tuna and house made spicy mayo and eel sauce. Plus the tempura crunch will add an extra crunchiness to your roll. Services are excellent to my point of view. They are very polite and will go extra miles to adhere to your requests. Since the covid-19, they hours of business tend to changes or fluctuate. So you might want to call ahead. They currently serving take outs only. No dine in!. There are outside patio for sitting tho, but all the meals will be put in the to go containers. While their focus is on sushi and rolls, there is only limited selections of cooked food items. There are a few options of soba but no ramen. Lunch combos are available from Monday to Friday only. One unique feature that sets Maizuru apart from other sushi places is that they have a menu of half rolls - that is half the portion of a regular roll at half the price (not available on holidays). This is really good if you want to sample more varieties. What we ordered: Hawaiian Roll ($7 half roll): Tuna and avocado over California roll. The tuna was very fresh and tasty. Awesome! Popcorn Lobster Roll ($7 half roll): Deep fried "popcorn" lobster over a spicy tuna roll. As expected, there were a lot more popcorns (batter) than lobster, but I did taste a few good bites of lobster there. The spicy tuna was not really spicy, but it tasted fresh so it's ok. The sauce on the other hand was absolutely yummy! Teppanyaki ($12.50): Beef and chicken stir fried with shredded cabbage and served on a sizzling platter. At first glance it appeared that the serving size was huge but the plate was actually curved in the middle so it wasn't really piled up high. However, the serving size was still very large and generous and we couldn't even finish half of it. It tasted good although the meat was a bit dry, but that's often what you get in Teppanyaki since the sizzling plate tends to overcook meat. Overall, a great place if you are craving for fusion rolls. The ability to order half rolls enables you to sample more varieties. Service has been courteous and efficient throughout. I know most sushi fan in Irvine likes Taiko more than any other Japanese places, but not me. One of the many things I like about this place is that I don' t have to wait hours to get a seat, especially at the sushi bar. I don't think it's worth my time or money to wait 2 hours just get to seated at a sushi bar and then to be treated just o.k. One of my favorite roll to get here is baby lobster roll. I have no found a place that makes a better baby lobster roll than here. I think it's made out of California roll topped with hot baby lobster and their special secrete sauce. The sauce they put on top is AMAZING. Another one is their seafood salad. I am not a dressing type of girl, so I always ask them to be easy on the dressing, but it's up to you. The type of dressing they use is another one that I have no tasted anywhere else. I believe the sauce has sesame oil, soy sauce, vinegar and others. Just go try it! This place get a star off for not having as many fresh sashimi has Taiko. But, the quality of the ones they have here is comparable to the ones at Taiko. I don't believe in the hype at Taiko, to me, it's just a place where most people "thinks" have the best sushi. In my opinion, the "ONLY" place that deserves a 5-star for serving the "BEST" sushi is Ikko. If you haven't tried it there, you GOTTA go try it. Found myself in the Oak Creek Center for lunch... and had no idea what there was. I was in the mood for Chinese or Thai... and the closest I found to what I wanted was sushi, even though I wasnt really in a sushi kind of a mood. For a bit, I was in there alone... they serve edamame to each table. I ordered the #17 - Garlic Albacore Roll and the #45 Albacore Tempura Roll. Both were really good, and fresh tasting with a lot of flavor. There was SO much garlic on the Garlic Albacore Roll, I loved it! I ate every piece. The service was wonferful, the staff was really nice... the only complaint was it was a bit pricey. For lunch I received Buy One Get One Half Off, so my total was $18 plus tax (each roll was $12)... so a bit much for lunch, but it was good and I liked it. I will be back :) read more

We came here on a Sunday around 1pm and it was decently crowded, but we were able to get seated right away for a table of 5. The service was quick and decent, checking in once in a while to make sure everything was ok. We ordered the seafood salad (lunch portion), 1/2 order sushi rolls, and 2 item combination bento plate with spicy tuna roll and sesame chicken. Most full entrees come with miso soup, which nicely starts the meal as it's light and yummy! The seafood salad was large for a lunch portion and we could barely finish it. The 1/2 order sushi rolls are perfect for splitting between people and not being stuck with one large roll and having differentiation for options! The 2 item continuation bento plate hit the spot. I think the sesame chicken is good with some teriyaki sauce if you ask for it on the side and the spicy tuna is solid as well. I came here for a quick bite to meet my girlfriend for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was my first time here and I wasn't really hungry. So, I went with the sashimi salad from the lunch menu that the friendly waitress had suggested. Our dishes came out fairly quick; within the 10 minutes. Surprisingly, the sashimi salad was more than what I expected. Greens were fresh and the fish were fresh as well, but not enough for me to be crazy about it. Ever since 2007, I have been going to Maizuru constantly as it is in my area. This is by far one of the best sushi places I've ever gone to as I have even gone to many fancy sushi restaurants, such as Nobu and Sugarfish. This place offers extremely fresh fish, excellent customer service, and amazing food. They even have good deals always going on so you should definitely check it out. Some of my favorite things to get here include the Baby Lobster Roll, poke bowl, ultimate albacore roll, hungry roll, and sashimi. I can't help but get more than one thing when I come because everything is just so good, and I also always want to try out new things but they end up becoming some of my favorite things eventually so now I just have too many options when I go. read more

Perfectly average and acceptable non-Japanese Japanese food. Portions are large and service is more or less friendly and fast. I've only ordered to go from here and both times I was pretty satisfied with the food. Rolls are large and fresh and not overly sauced if you order one with sauce. Seafood udon is FISHY. Not bad, but fishy. I warn you against this if you are or anyone within a few yards of you is sensitive to the smell. Dining area looked pretty clean though bit small. Menu is diverse with an overwhelming number of rolls. If I'm in this plaza and feel like a quick "Japanese" dinner, I wouldn't be against coming here again, though for a sit down experience, I'd definitely go somewhere else. Maizuru is for sure a "to go" sort of place for me and is a safe bet when settling a craving for rolls. The plaza itself has plenty of parking and several dining along with ample patio seating. Maizuru is one of the best family run restaurants in Irvine in my opinion. It's a weekly stop for me. I know I can walk in to see a crew of smiling faces - James, Big Eric, Eric, Julia, Inka, Lauren, and Jose will take great care of you. The selection of fish may not be as broad as other places, but James picks the best of the crop. The price is reasonable - even if you're picky and want to go full nigiri/sashmi. There's also plenty of rolls to choose from. With weekly visits, I've tried pretty much everything they could put in front of me. You really cannot go wrong. My favorites are the yellow tail belly, salmon belly, and anything with the roasted garlic chips or onion straws. My family and I have been going to Maizuru for years here and have never had a problem before. However, when we went in for lunch earlier this week, my family and I sat at the bar counter and tried to order, but the chef ignored us. After a few tries to get his attention he glanced at his and told us to wait in a curt manner before continuing to ignore us. There was no one else at the counter, and it didn't look particularly busy, so we weren't sure what we were waiting for. We felt it was really rude, and ultimately decided not to eat there. This is our "go to" restaurant. We are always greeted and acknowledged even if they are crowded and busy. The hostess and servers are always attentive and the food is great. My husband usually orders the 3 combi and I like each of the rolls that I have ordered. There are lots of choices including baked rolls. I called 30 minutes prior to closing one time and I realize that's cutting it close, but the owner was extremely rude about me ordering and demanding I come within ten minutes.
