The Fair of Saint-Hyacinthe is the biggest agricultural festival in Quebec. Lasting ten days,…read moreusually at the end of july/first week of august, it boasts more than 1800 animals, hundreds of activities and kiosks, carnival rides, all kinds of shows and draws over 180,000 visitors every year.
Following the definition of summer fun, there is something for everyone. This is my third visit and I definitely recommend it if you are fan of festivals, animals, food and a little country flare. For anyone who lives in the city, this is a great way to get away and learn a bit about livestock, farm life and the equipment used in the production of our food. You can visit a birthing center and see little piglets or chicks, watch milking of cows or shearing of sheep and there are ample animal judging competitions throughout the day.
If you are a fan of big tractors, trucks and machinery -antiques or new, you'll find it here too.
The site itself is very spacious as there is a mix of indoor (air conditionned) pavillions and outdoor entertainment, along with concert stages and stadiums to witness the different shows. We particularly like the demolition derby or tractor pulls.
Included in the cost of your entrance(20$ for adults, or cheaper if you purchase online in advance), you get access to all facilities, shows and unlimited rides. The fair is located in a neighborly suburb, you may find free parking in the streets however this fills up fast. There are also paid parking lots belonging to the fair.
In previous years, we were able to park at the hospital right next door for a very low fee however this year many security personel were garding the entrance. Best tip is to arrive early, and if possible obviously come on a weekday instead of the weekend as this fair becomes an extremely popular attraction and gets crowded quickly.
As with many big attractions, this fair does have more of a "commercial" vibe, with sponsors like Bank of Montreal and other big giants, you'll notice some of the kiosks do not sell handmade arts and crafts as one would expect at an agricultural fair, but are advertising products and services. This can still be fun though as with all times I went, Dodge Ram was showcasing their trucks and gave free gas cards. One year Jean Coutu was there handing out goodie bag and Oasis juice was serving the thirsty for free. The sponsors are your opportunity to snag free samples.
The only drawback for me is the lack of unique food options that I come to expect at fairs, from watching American food carnival shows. There is mostly poutine, burgers, hot dogs, pizza and sandwiches. You will not find deep fried oreos, giant monster creations or wild concoctions in St-Hyacinthe - the choices are boring and expensive. There is a kiosk for fresh smoothies and fruits and vegetables if you want a healthier option.
I recommend the delicious mini donuts made on the spot and an indoor kiosk selling flavored curd cheese. If you'd rather eat before or after the fair, in the surrouding area there is a cheese factory/restaurant by the name of "Qualité Summum" that offers delicious fresh cheese and anything you can make with it, including stuffed crust pizza.
Mark the Saint Hyacinthe Expo on your to do list, especially if you have kids as this will be the highlight of the summer.
