For as long as I can remember I have wished to pay my respects to the grave of Giuseppe Garibaldi,…read morealso known as "The Hero of the Two Words", who elected the small Sardinian island of Caprera as his final home. Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi was an Italian general, patriot, revolutionary and republican, largely credited with Italian unification and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He lead quite a fascinating life between heroic battles, wifes, trips all over the world, all while receiving the highest military honors and writing his interesting memories. The Museum is located in Garibaldis' former house- and final resting place- and offers a very intimate glimpse into the man behind the legend. It's open Tuesdays-Sundays from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm (the last visit starts at 6:45 pm) and to book a visit you have to call +393357505401. Closed on Mondays. The luscious park still has a tree that Garibaldi planted for his daughter and in the stables you can see the grave marker dedicated to his legendary long-time equine companion Marsala. The house still has all of the original furniture as well as some family portraits, awards and books. One of the most touching moments of our visit was seeing the bed where he passed, strategically placed in front of the window to offer Garibaldi a last view of his beloved ocean. The visit continues in the garden with its beautiful olive trees and, just a few steps away, the small family cemetery with the grave of Garibaldi, his wife and children. We stopped to pay our respects in the deep silence of the garden as the sun was starting to set down and it was a very poignant moment and tribute to one my my childhoods heroes. We ended our visit with a small tour around two of the boats that carried the hero on many of his adventures. I highly recommend this visit.
