*~*Magic Island*~* So, what's so magical about this place? I think the pictures alone sum it all up. It's gorgeous! "Magic Island" was the name given by developers in 1964 to construct this man-made peninsula into a resort complex, but the plan fell through. The name stuck once it was eventually converted to a park. The island is adjacent to Ala Moana Beach Park. It's one of the most popular destinations among locals and tourists alike. Plenty of free parking, and very convenient to Ala Moana Shopping Center, which is just across the street. Just like everyone else, I come here often to exercise or to soak in the fantastic views of the ocean, the gnarly waves, surfers, the lagoon, Diamond Head, and the Waikiki hotels, all lined up along the Pacific. It is also where a lot of newlyweds come out to take professional photos. We even took our first DYI Christmas family photo here in 2015. It's one of my favorite keepsakes, because I know my son would probably never do it again. LOL. A lot of run/walk events take place here, too. One that I recommend is the annual Visitor Industry CHARITY WALK! Be sure to check it out later this year on Sat, November 14, 2020. read more

There are benches where you can look out into the harbor and Waikiki hotels. My friend and I were eating our lunch while enjoying the breeze. Color of old benches are affected by the salt water and new metal benches are faced towards the park. I heard that the city made renovations to the area around the community restroom. There was one outdoor shower with a roof and the other outdoor shower was open with no roof. read more

A secret beach in Honolulu, Hawaii... If you won a trip to a neighbor island, would you choose Sand Island, Magic Island, or Rabbit Island? I would select Magic Island because it truly is a magical place! Located across the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center, I parked in the free parking lot at Ala Moana Beach Park and walked about 4 minutes to Magic Island. If you want to have a picnic here, I would suggest that you bring a wagon and fill it with your hibachi, charcoals, tongs, paper goods, chairs, beverages, and food because it's a bit of a distance! On weekends and holidays, this place is crowded! In the past, I remember coming at 6am (or so) to reserve a spot! Yes... many fond memories are linked here: from Friday night viewing of the fireworks to Memorial Day Lantern Floating Festival and Senior year of High School class photo... Magic Island is a picturesque place. If you're lucky, you'll see couples taking wedding photos here. Sometimes, you'll catch a canoe race and maybe witness some successful fishermen! There's lots of activity going on here! Come and view the sunset...it's awesome! read more

I had no idea about Magic Island Lagoon until I was researching spots for kids to swim. The waters were calmer here and the sand was softer. It was definitely a much calmer scene than Waikiki and liked it a lot better! The waters are more shallow too. Although our baby wasn't very interested, we'll definitely be back once he gets older! It's located at the edge of Ala Moana Beach Park which is a great spot to hang out too. There is a big parking lot so you can drive directly here but it looked pretty full when we came on a Friday shortly before sunset. We didn't know about the parking lot so we had parked at Ala Moana Center across the street. It's about a 10-15 minute walk but if you're coming later in the day once the sun is setting, it isn't super hot and the walk is quite nice with the ocean breeze. I'd recommend this area for anyone - not just families with kids. It's a nice spot to go for a run, have a picnic, watch the sunset, swim, and more! read more

Magic Island is the perfect place for beach goers who want to be near the shopping area and also want some calm waters. The beach has man-made wave breakers so the waters are always calm and shallow. Perfect place to bring your kids and not have to worry about being swept away. It's not a quiet beach though since there are always events nearby. But if you're lucky, you may be invited to a random stranger's tent and enjoy their cookout! Parking is also free and abundant but be sure you going using the park otherwise you will be towed. read more

Perfect place to walk, jog, bike, skate, whatever you want to do. Anther alone or with family and friends there is ample room for everyone. Every weekend I see a ton of people enjoying themselves in water, out of the water, bbq'ing, sleeping in hammocks, doing absolutely whatever they wish outdoors. What I love about it here is that there are tons of parking spots and it's such a family oriented beach. You can watch waves or look at boats and outriggers paddling. It's just a perfect scenery. Magic Island is great!! It's actually a man made Island built back in the 60s. The views from here are spectacular, and this is the place to be to watch the sun set as lots of people came here before dusk. Magic Island is connected to Ala Moana Park, it has a big parking lot, and at the end is a small beach/Lagoon with a rock barrier. Here, along with the Park, has a good mix of locals and tourists, as well as the homeless, and it's no way near as crowded as Waikiki Beach, definitely a more laid back feel here. Runners, BBQers, paddle boarders, swimmers, surfers, walkers, everyone here is doing something enjoyable, I made sure to come here daily during my stay in Honolulu, love this place!! read more

Magic island has always been one of my first loves. I have a lot of fond memories here as I was growing up. Being an adult and visiting this place makes it even more special to me. I wish tourists would stop doing illegal weddings and tourist activities here and would get fined more though. Probably my most memorable spot during our trip to Oahu. Even though we walked for hours already, we asked our Uber driver to bring us to Ala Moana beach and we walked our way down to Magic Island. Our luck it was around sunset. So many folks waiting for the sunset. We saw folks also doing yoga on surf boards. How fun! There was a nicely paved sidewalk as well. Great for running and there were plenty of runners out. I was kind of jealous of the view they have for their run. The area feels less crowded than Waikiki. Definitely check it out! read more

Magic island is pretty much the one-stop place to enjoy your afternoon. You can walk or ride a bike. You can put up a tent and barbecue. You can have a blow up fun, jumpy house and have parties. Or you can sit on the side and turtle watch. There's also a little lagoon at the end of the peninsula. That is almost a secret, but not quite, but still quiet enough that it feels private. And it's a tiny little beach that you can lay out and go swimming in the lagoon and it feels magical. Sometimes you can find a private little spot on the rocks b we low the path on the Diamondhead side of tge peninsula. Here you can do what I like to call, "Sidewalk snorkeling," which is basically just watching for moorish idols, box fish, tilapias, and more from the shore. Be prepared for a larger community gathering on the weekends because this is a hot spot for local pau hana. Mornings are better, but it's a cool place to watch Friday night fireworks from the Hilton. All along the eva side of the peninsula, benches are placed for some of the b est turtle watching ever. Sit and relax, count turtles, enjoy sun n ocean, feel alive. Yessss! read more

Let me set your expectations correctly here for this beach. It is a casual, local, hangout beach that is conveniently right across from Ala Moana Center. If you are looking for a beach not overwhelmed with tourists yes it fits the bill. However, what it is moderately filled with are locals barbecuing and hanging out in tents, a mix of tourists and locals on the beach, joggers, a few homeless, and random people just casually walking through. It features a public bathroom on premises, small jungle gym for the kiddies, and an open field you can kick a soccer ball around. There is a big parking area connected to it, and a pier full of private boats nearby. The bathrooms arent very clean, on a scale of 1-10 I give them a 4. For the park overall I give it a 7. Definitely not nice enough for a romantic beach date, and don't play yourself and propose here either or you might get a "no" answer just on principal. There are nicer Hawaiian beaches particularly for romance, and I recommend that you choose elsewhere for that. Overall it is a decent, convenient hangout beach to kill some time. read more

Their parking lot has been closed since March. I've started walking/swimming here almost every day because all gyms are closed and I definitely do not want to get any fatter. I go very early in the morning or when the sun is going down because it is just too hot during midday, but this place is right by my house and if I go early enough, I can find parking in the small lot near the entrance off Atkinson, or find street parking close by. This has been one of my favorite beach parks since I moved here 20 years ago from NYC. There are nice walking paths, it's very safe, and right now, due to the parking situation, it is not too crowded. I love swimming in the lagoon. The water is calm, clear, and so clean. Right now is the perfect time to go because it's still limited to parties of 5 or smaller so it's not crowded with people throwing birthday parties or huge groups of people just hanging out. I highly recommend this wonderful park to go out and get some exercise. It's been a long and tough quarantine, we deserve some fresh air and sunshine! While this place is one of my favorite spots on the island it only gets 4 stars for now because of the construction going on. Why it's my favorite: - running. Run the perimeter and it's an easy 0.6 miles. Add the rest of the park and you get 5k (see ala Moana regional park review for details). The 0.6 mile loop is marked and starts at the ocean side / diamond head side ( southeast for mainlanders) part of the parking lot. You can't beat the views of this short loop - diamond head, ocean, and if you run around 6 a sunset that can't be beat. Want a cooler/ sunscreen free jog? Do it at night the trail is lit and popular (safe) - swimming. Swim to the rocks and back in the lagoon. It's a nice 100 yard round trip and no waves. Just stay away from the opening by the 2nd and 3rd pile of rocks (from your right) - the name. magic island! Come on! Ok the small meh for now. Looks like they're putting in sprinklers so most of the grassy area is blocked off. A little unsightly and a bit of a drag to have to stick to the sidewalk. Hope it gets moved read more

Haven't been here for a while now. Looks like it got renovated, with better walkways, trees, and lights. There are also new benches and trash cans, more of them, and new showers. I go on the weekends for exercise and I see many families with kids walking around and riding their bikes. I recommend coming here on the weekends to get your exercise or just enjoy the view. There are nice views of diamond head, the beach and ocean, and the park. read more

Very very beautiful here, especially during around sunset. The skyline , the sunset, people watching seeing people surf, paddle board, kayak and fish. In the distance some people are sailing and some are on boat tours. You get to hear and see the waves crashing on the rocks. You can also see some small sea life, like crabs, small fish, snails etc. You may see people getting married here or photographers taking pictures. Everything is just so very beautiful, the sea the land and the sky. You will definitely take some great pictures here. read more

This is a local hangout, tourist don't know much about this place. The waves are small, friendly for kids and if you just want swimming without the waves that at times wiping you out. You can set up tents and do picnic, grill and hangout the whole day.The weekend is packed with locals and parking is all pure luck if you come around 9am. MAGIC ISLAND has a perfect view of the Honolulu skyline. On our recent trip to Hawaii we came here to try scuba diving. It was wonderful and absolutely worth the views. We even got to see four weddings parties . What a treat . The lagoon is enclosed so it's safer to swim here with families and kids. The park is also popular for the locals and there are plenty of cyclists , roller skaters and runners. They are also families barbecuing here as well. Very percent for a picnic. I highly recommend checking Magic island next time you're in the area. read more

Beautiful public beach and park, a Local favorite. Marred by homeless poor and tourists behaving badly, the former victims of our cruel corporate capitalist society, the latter the privileged beneficiaries of the same economic system on the other end. Queen Lili'uokalani made the beaches belong to the people, the Locals, the Hawai'ians. This is theirs. Lovely beach, watched over by some of the best lifeguards in the world. Incomparable views of Diamondhead and the Honolulu skyline, take a walk here at sunrise or sunset for an especially magical experience. You can watch surfers, the ocean, or Local children having fun. The public toilets are scary, but the outdoor showers are convenient. Easily accessible by TheBus, but remember they don't allow wet swimming suits. If you're coming from Waikiki, be respectful or please stay at your hotel. If you're here for wedding photos, try to keep in mind that the Local children belong here, you're just visiting. read more

Local beach hangout which is fantastic for bbq and hanging out in the water. Not many tourists at this location as there are so many beaches on the island. This place is safe and clean but you do see the occasional homeless walking around but everyone from what I see minds their own business. It's very spacious and not crowded. Exercising at Magic Island is probably on my list of top things to do on a Saturday morning. Nothing beats a nicely taken care of park with paved walkways, numerous places to use the bathroom and shower, as well as plenty of space to enjoy a day in the sun. Magic island is a manmade extension of Ala Moana Beach Park with great views of Waikiki, Ala Moana, and Kakaako. I remember coming to Magic island as a kid with my family to watch the Friday night fire works. The parking is shared with Ala Moana Beach Park, but nowadays I'll jog here from home to take in the sunshine, fresh air, and enjoy this place I call home. read more

I brought my daughter out here to watch the sunset after I cream a couple of weekends ago and it was really nice. It's pretty crowded but there is so much run it's not so overwhelming. Magic Island brings back so many memories. Coming here as a kid to all the many BBQ's held here over the years. It's a great place to have a BBQ because there are tables, lots of shade under trees, ample space to play sports (including quidditch), rubbish bins all over, there is a paved walkway, restrooms are near, access to the beach and you can unload/load right in front. There is a good sized lot to park in but during holidays, it gets full fast. A reason why this is such a popular spot is because people park at Ala Moana Center and walk over (not sure if you should do that but everyone does it). Some of the highlights of Magic Island is that you can come here for Independence Day and see the fireworks similarly to being at Ala Moana Regional Park. You can also see boats coming in and going out along the water (Diamond Head side). Fishing must be good because many people come here to fish. People also come here to get married or take wedding photos. I've seen several photo shoots here as well. Also, the annual Memorial Day Lantern Floating Hawaii is held here (50,000+ people attend). If you grew up in Honolulu, chances are you've been here at least once. 5 stars for nostalgic reasons. read more

It's usually very chill not very busy and the water is calm for swimming especially for keikis. There is also ample parking. Love this place... read more

This place is beautiful. Well kept. A great place to come for a jog or even get married! My first visit here today was for my Aunties wedding. She got married in between 2 palm trees that over look the water, Waikiki, and even a beautiful view of Diamond Head! Lots of couples choose this spot to get married. Today there was probably about 2-3 other couples getting married at the same time as my Auntie. Park is well kept and the beach is super busy. Which is a good thing since the water must feel really good. Parking is abundant! So if you plan on coming here you'll spend less time in the parking lot and more time enjoying the beautiful scenery! read more

Review #337 - 2018 It's actually been a while since I last came to this park; but after a terrible 2 meltdown at a restaurant, my brother and I decided that it was best that we buy some food and take the baby to a park instead of dining in. That was a very smart move on our part. We arrived at around 3:45 on Saturday, October 27th, and there was still plenty of parking in one of the lots and we founded the perfect shaded spot to park the car to keep out of the terrible heat. We sat and ate at one of the picnic tables, and about 10 minutes into my meal, I started feeling some weird bites. It was ants! I jumped up and ended my meal real quick. The park is really nice and green. Not too much shades though even though there are plenty of trees around. I didn't see a children's playground in the nearby area so my daughter just ran around chasing birds in the grass area to expense her extra energy. Happy baby equals happy mommy! read more

Magic Island is an extension of Ala Moana Beach park. It is manmade and creates a sort of peninsula on the Waikiki side of the park. Therefore, it has great panoramic views of the ocean. It is a great spot to watch the sunset or the Friday night fireworks from Hilton (though fireworks has been halted during COVID). There are a couple yacht clubs that sit right next door and therefore there is a lot of opportunity to watch boats, canoes, and sailboats launching from the area and heading out to the ocean. The shoreline is often spotted with fishermen and an enclosed beach is situated on the south side. There are lots of rocks to climb and play on and recently many new trees have been planted in the park section of Magic Island. There are ample facilities including many picnic benches and a restroom. Magic Island is a great place to hang out near the beach and offers great views from every side. read more

Great place for perfect view of Diamond head. You have beautiful, strong waves that crash on the rocks. The sunset view is also breathtaking. You also see more local culture than Waikiki beach. The new parking lot is really smooth and this is become a skateboard park in the evening after sunset which I think it's really a good idea for people to use the park at least the parking lot in the evening with some music and a little activity for young people it doesn't bother anybody so that's a suggestion if we put a little supervision on it I'm sure it could be a safe place for kids listen to music skate and wait for the traffic to die down from sunset viewing read more

This is for sure a good swim spot. Not as crowded as Waikiki beach and you can have some fun with the tides in the lagoon if you so desire. We went to the beach as well as the lagoon. I like the beach because it gets deep fast and that is nice when you are swimming and you like to pretend you are a mermaid and dive deep and play around. ;) Hey it is named *Magic Island* for a reason! And if you get hungry walk down to the food trucks or across the drive to the BBQ stand (not the best but will do in a pinch). Shower areas were clean when there last as well. read more

Attended a family function at Magic Island this past Sunday, and it was a beautiful day. There was lots of big party going on, cause the tents with tables and chairs was out in full force. Lots of people out, and going to the beach also. The parking was free and much to my surprise...available close to the park. As the day went by, I noticed How clean the park, with staff emptying the trash cans. I bathroom was decently clean, for a public restroom. I recommend this place to anyone looking for beautiful day at the beach or enjoying a leisure time. read more

The newly renovated Magic Island looks amazing. Earlier in 2020, Magic Island's parking lot was closed. Parking was tough to find, especially weekends & late afternoon times. Some areas in the park were blocked off for sometime as well as bathrooms & showers. Then in late December, the parking lot was reopened. Instantly parking problems around Ala Moana Park eased. Was it worth it? Hell ya! This is the people's park. read more
