I didn't know you were not allowed to eat fruit at the library and was asked if I needed a copy of the rules... how about just telling me nicely to put my food away? This is a huge turn off from coming here since I usually bring snacks with me to study as I study pretty much from 9-5 pm every day as a medical student. I guess if I want to eat any sort of food I would have to do it someplace else.

While it doesn't have every book, they do take suggestions on books if they're not available via e-book or in any of the libraries. Older books can be a harder find. Lovely space inside, a good sized kid's section and areas to study or read quietly. Friendly staff! Plenty of free parking outside, near the high school circle loop. Watch out for the speed bumps, one way roads.

I believe it's the Bronx's biggest branch--its 5 stories include a children and teen floor, space for concerts, film screenings and other events, a huge circulating collection, outdoor reading terrace, and many tables and chairs at which to read or study. The books are neatly kept and there are many more sections to peruse than at other branches. This is also one of the few locations in the Bronx at which you can apply for an ID NYC card. That being said, the flow of helping patrons is abysmal. I had an appointment to apply for my ID NYC card this morning that I arrived on time for. The office is on the 5th floor. When I reached it, I was ordered by a cantankerous security guard to stand in a specific spot. When I wasn't at the precise spot where she wanted me, she made a rude gesture to indicate that to me. Other applicants were complaining in Spanish behind her back about what a high and mighty b-word she was, so I guess it wasn't personal at least. I was eventually given a pager and was told I could wait on any other floor until I was called. After an hour of waiting (with an appointment!) and no page, I went back up to ask how much longer it would be. An apologetic worker told me to wait behind the first woman in line and said I would be seen shortly. Of course the security guard had a problem with me standing where I was told and put me in the back of the line despite my explanation of what the other worker had told me to do. Five minutes later, the other worker comes out and tells me I'm standing at the back and I should be in front. Can y'all make up your minds?!?! Once I was seen the process took all of five minutes. Ugh. Afterward, I decided to check out a book that I'd picked up while waiting. There were two librarians at the circulation desk and about five patrons ahead of me in line, so I figured it shouldn't take more than maybe two minutes. I have no idea why it took ten minutes; I felt like I was at the post office. All this to say, please demand to your city and state legislators not to cut library funds!! They are an amazing resource when they can operate on more than a shoestring budget. There's little point in having a beautiful shiny new building if it's not able to help patrons because it's understaffed. You can't just give a community this space if you aren't going to train its staff to actually help people.

Starbucks may have amazing coffee, but you can't really work there comfortably if you have a call or just need to focus... so grab your drink and head over to the library you won't be disappointed!! This was a wonderful and well needed discovery. I was hustling back from the Newark Airport but couldn't get to my lodging back in time for a 10am scheduled call and just popping into Starbucks was just not feasible to have this call. So, I figured hit a library! Ugh, the challenge was on! I tried to pop into Denville library but of course there was yard work going on and they don't have any private study space and you can't be on a call/talking... and to add to my challenges... was down to 7% battery life on my computer for a 90 minute call... (Murphy's law has nothing on me) but thanks to an amazing Denville librarian workers mentioned Wharton offers this awesome setup so I had to check it out and could not be more surprised and appreciative for this life saving setup! Shout out to Denville for knowing about this and HUGE PROPS to Wharton municipality to putting this setup together! More municipalities need to consider this and follow Wharton's initiative! This is great even with this "Living with Covid and the new normal" it offers people to socially distance, be outside, be productive (by getting online) and also some quiet space, all the while not disrupting or adding more pressure to structural constricts of nothing having more space within the library building. Hats off to whoever thought of this solution! You rock!!! Also the library has ample parking and is a quick walk to other businesses on Main Street... so bring on the walk traffic... lots of close by eateries and shops! Although some exhibits are small, they are carefully curated to provide impact. The staff are well-positioned to be helpful and friendly. And the library downstairs is really one of a kind. The library staff are particularly astute at research and at working with people. Many library pulls do require an appointment you can make online. If interested, visit to learn more about the history of libraries in NYC--you'll come to find out much more about the Schomburg Center's historic role in the growth and preservation of public access to information and to vital programs. A great place to visit and meander, especially if not local to the exact neighborhood and you're visiting for meal nearby.

It's an excellent spot, with the artful curation that makes museum gift shops worth browsing, and a particularly nice selection of book and New York-related merchandise. I'm a writer in my off-Yelp life, and was actually a finalist for the NYPL's Young Lions Fiction Award in 2020, a year when all events were canceled. I missed out on a free trip to New York and a fancy party, but I took some of my prize money (I didn't win, but I somehow got paid just for being nominated) and sent it right back to the library, spending it at the online gift shop. I had a new baby named Leo and went kind of nuts on library and lion-themed gear, buying a bundle of apparel for our whole family as well as some picture books, a Christmas ornament, and heavy bookends modeled after the library's marble lions, Patience and Fortitude. I've been more restrained in person, but I have enjoyed browsing whenever I've gone, and my COVID kid Leo, now four, loves the place too. He's a big fan of the New York subways and has gotten a couple of toy train cars and a grown-up coffee table book about the subway at this gift shop. I don't live in New York, but I visit often and always like coming by the library. As long as they keep selling book and lion branded merch, I'll keep giving them my money.
