Here on Saturday lunch time (12:50?). Expected a long line-up but luckily, there was no line up and we (2 of us) were seated immediately. (15 mins after we were seated, a line up grew and there were several groups waiting outside of the front door). We both got Negi-ramen. My hubby got an Ajitama as a topping. Asked for salt level, chicken oil level, and noodle firmness with all "Normal". They have a small bowl of steamed rice for free - my hubby got one, I skipped it. I liked the Negi ramen, plenty of fresh shredded negi on top, adding fresh, crispy and succulent texture. The soup was rich, savory and creamy - creamy to the point where it is almost felt like "sauce" than "soup". I also expected soy sauce flavor as much as tonkotu's (which I was used to in Japan) but it was super tonkotsu forward, so I was a bit disappointed. Well, the disappointment is solely due to my personal preference - the flavor itself was well rounded and decent. I liked the thick noodle. It intertwined very well with the thick creamy soup. Next time I will order the noodle firmness as "Firm" because it gets flabby quickly in the hot soup. Satisfying, and very comforting :) Good!

The moment i stepped in, it reminded me of the Japan ramen stores. Its not a big place but the ramen steam warms up the entire place. There might still be a line up outside. But it didnt take too long. The ramens are all the same broth with a little variation. It comes with a bowl of plain rice. And u might wonder what its for. When ure done all the noodles, dump the rice in there or scoop a spoonful full and immerse it in the broth. Its soooo goood. I ate every last drop!

Another great visit with delicious ramen! We absolutely love the rice on the side and toppings tray (pastes/onions) - here's a pro tip: if you order the max [or any bowl w.seaweed] take ot out of the ramen broth and eat it w.your savoyry rice bowl! Our friend from OKC loved it! Thank you MS Team!

Machida Shoten has been gaining popularity since its recent opening, so we had to stop by and try it out! We arrived early for a Friday evening around 6pm and were seated about 10 mins in. The line grew quite a lot during dinner hours after we sat down. The menu consists of a single broth and noodle type with variations on the toppings. I got the Kara (includes a spicy bomb) with an added ajitama (seasoned egg) while my partner had the Chashu (comes with 5x pork chashu). We could specify the level of chicken oil on top of the ramen and whether we wanted a complimentary bowl of rice (of course)! There is a guide on every table with recommendations on how to have the rice - mixed with condiments offered on the side, with an egg and wrapped in nori, or mixed into the ramen broth. They offer a nice selection of complimentary sides including pickled cucumbers, garlic paste, chilli bean sauce, and onions which really elevated the rice bowl! The broth was rich and full of umami, while the chashu was thick and fatty. The spicy bomb came as a paste on top so you had control of how much to mix in. We were very full at the end and would definitely return!

Machida Shoten is a new ramen restaurant located in downtown Toronto near College and Spadina. I attended for the grand opening and it was really busy as they were offering 50% off ramens! I waited an hour but I imagine during regular hours it would not be as crazy. The interior decoration is very lively and definitely makes it seem as if you are right in Japan They specialize in Iekei style ramen, with rich broth and is served with a side of rice. I tried the Chashu Ramen which was $20 at regular price. It has a good variety of the toppings like nori/seaweed, quail egg, and spinach along with 5 pieces of chashu. I also added an ajitama/egg for $2 to complete the aesthetic. The chashu is a kind of thick cut compared to some other versions, but it was very hearty and filling, and went well with the rice as well. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the broth did not disappoint as it was rich and full of umami! There were also various toppings like onions and chili bean paste that I used to go along with the rice and ramen for a change in textures and flavours. I tried a bit of the broth with the rice as the porridge as recommended and it was alright but I prefer it separate. I had a minor inconvenience during my visit as I was seated at the window bar, and it was very cold with the draft from the windows. After being in the cold for so long I was hoping to warm up some more but it was a bit uncomfortable there. Overall super delicious and is instantly one of my top picks for ramen in Toronto!

Came here dining solo and had a great experience sitting at the bar. The ramen noodles had a really good texture, and the chashu was flavorful and well done. Service was attentive and friendly as well. My only complaint was that the soup was a bit too salty for my taste. Overall, still a solid spot and a good option for solo dining.

Machida Shoten located along College St. near Major St. is a ramen chain that originated from Yokohama, Japan. This famous chain is known for their iekei style of ramen. iekei refers to the rich style of ramen broth, characterized by rich pork marrow and tonkotsu-shoyu sauce. It is also characterized by thick, straight noodles with toppings like nori, char siu and spinach. This style of ramen is also served with rice as well (for dipping or creating rice porridge). Having 900 locations in Japan, this ramen chain has expanded internationally to South Korea, China, HK, Thailand, Vietnam, Switzerland, as well as Australia and the U.S. Now, this particular location of Machida Shoten is the first location ever opened in Canada! Currently in their soft opening phase, Machida Shoten is open daily from 11am to 2pm and then 5-9pm. I think it has been popular with lines so I made my way to the ramen shop on a Monday morning right when they opened at 11am (was their first customer of the day!). Their official grand opening is on Dec 12th! Upon arrival at the restaurant, I was able to sit at the ramen bar towards the back of the space. The place isn't big, however, there is seating for around 25 customers. There are menus already placed at the table where you can either order with the staff or through a QR code. There is also a little sheet at each setting explaining how you could eat iekei ramen as a bowl of rice is also included with your bowl of ramen. The menu is simple with 5 different types of iekei style ramen available, depending on how hungry you are. You are also able to customize your ramen by choosing the noodle firmness, saltiness level, as well as chicken oil level. There are additional toppings you can add for an additional cost. Side dishes include gyoza, karaage, edamame, as well as an aburi chashu don. They also have a non-alcoholic drink menu where you can get green tea, soft drinks, ramune, and Sapporo 0.0%. There is also green tea ice cream for dessert as well. I decided to order the original ramen (includes one piece of chashu, one quail egg, three small sheets of seaweed, and some spinach) - price is $14.99. I also decided to add an ajitama (seasoned egg) as well for an extra $2. My order came at a reasonable time and staff also provided me with some onions in case I wanted to add it to my ramen or rice. With the rice, I added some ramen broth to it along with some garlic paste as well as chili paste and ate it with the seaweed provided, as shown in the information sheet on the table. The rice was pretty good! The ramen broth itself was rich and heavy - perfect for a cold day. The noodles were made well and they were slightly thicker than what I'm used to. Both the quail egg and seasoned egg were cooked perfectly and the chashu was tender. Overall, a hearty, filling, and warm bowl of ramen. The rice on the side was an extra bonus. Service was friendly and all staff greet you together when you walk in. Staff were able to answer any questions I had and as I was leaving, one staff walked me to the door and opened the door for me, despite it being super cold today. Overall, a great new place to try iekei style ramen in Toronto. Will definitely be popular in the upcoming winter months!

We came here because it was the first in Canada. We are always on the hunt for good ramen, and we really missed the creaminess of ramen from Japan. We came here around 11:30, and there was 1 to 2 tables being clear up, so the wait wasn't long. But as we are eating our meal, there's groups of people constantly lining up. The ramen itself is really creamy. One thing that I was slightly disappointed by is how fatty the chashu were. Usually they don't feel greasy at other ramen places, but here felt like eating a pork belly that has a layer of lean meat and a top layer of really grease and fatty meat. The place itself is small, so definitely come during its opening. Another down side was in the restaurant itself, it felt like there's no heating. It was pretty cold, and we saw a few customers wearing jackets.

Loved the ramen here and would come again soon. The broth was flavourful and just perfect for what I was craving. It also came with a bowl of rice which is a nice touch as the rice goes well with the soup base. I'm also a fan of quail eggs so that was perfect for me. Came here for lunch where service was quick and got in early to miss the main lunch crowd.

My family and I came here on a Sunday afternoon for their grand opening, the interior is very cozy for being in the previous corner of Fancy Franks space, and because it was a Friday-Saturday-Sunday with 50% off, we expected a big lineup for the afternoon. The average wait time was about one hour, which wasn't too bad. Parking in the area was limited unless you know the spots where you won't get a ticket. Since it was the grand opening, my family and I decided to try their signature original ramen and two Max bowls. I really liked that you can choose the destiny of the noodle, oil level, and amount of salt. The ramen came out fairly quickly, the presentation was stellar, and the broth was very tasty. I honestly wished I had more, especially since I chose a lower sodium level, making it less salty. My only gripe was that the gyoza came out a bit late, but a staff member mentioned it wasn't presentable in its initial state. The chicken karaage was quite large--I had to use my chopsticks to break it up so it could be shared. It was deliciously tender and well seasoned. Overall, it was a great grand opening. I'd definitely come back when it's less hectic and the wait time isn't as long (around one hour). I did speak with an associate and hope they eventually offer more options, such as chicken or vegetarian dishes. I have friends who would have loved to come by but don't eat pork (chashu).

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Reach ten stamps and you get a free bowl of ramen. - The chashu is excellent! My rating is 4.5 stars. I'm rounding down. Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)
