I waited, reflected on the entire experience, and ultimately hired another law firm before deciding to share what happened. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend avoiding K Altman Law. I initially paid a $500 consultation fee for a 30 minute meeting with attorney Keith Altman. I requested a Zoom meeting because I wanted to see and speak directly with the attorney who would potentially handle my case. A Zoom meeting was arranged only after I indicated that I would otherwise request a refund. During the consultation, I tried to explain my medical school dismissal and asked whether the firm genuinely believed it could help me. Mr. Altman repeatedly interrupted me and did not allow me to fully explain the situation. The scheduled 30 minute consultation ended in less than 15 minutes. He told me that he would take my case and represent me for $15,000. I made it clear that I did not come from money and could not afford to spend that amount unless the firm truly had a reasonable strategy. I sold my car and placed the remaining balance on a credit card because continuing medical school was extremely important to me. Before I received or reviewed a representation agreement, the firm contacted me multiple times requesting payment. After I paid the full $15,000, I received an agreement stating that much of the advocacy would be handled by a non-attorney, with an attorney becoming involved only if necessary. That was not my understanding of what Mr. Altman had represented during our Zoom meeting. When I questioned this difference and asked about a refund, I was told that work had already started and that I would receive only a partial refund if I ended the representation. At that point, I felt financially trapped and continued with the firm. My first non-attorney advocate, Barbara, was personally kind and professional. However, the initial letter to the school was drafted by a non-attorney, was not signed by an attorney, and required substantial edits and additions from me. The letter was sent to the school's general counsel, but it did not produce any meaningful response or progress. Barbara later left the firm, and my case was transferred to another non-attorney advocate, Robert Wright. Communication then became extremely poor. Responses sometimes took weeks, and I frequently did not know what was happening with my case. An attorney named Ms. Garcia was also assigned to the matter. When I asked questions, I was repeatedly told that she would need to research the issue and get back to me, but I often did not receive a follow-up. Throughout the representation, I did not receive a single substantive letter signed by an attorney and sent to the school. During my original consultation, Mr. Altman told me that he would first try to resolve the matter internally by arguing that dismissal was excessive for a first-time professionalism issue and requesting that the sanction be changed to probation. I also understood him to say that litigation could be considered if the school refused. This understanding was a major reason I agreed to pay $15,000. However, after payment was made, I never had another conversation with Mr. Altman. The most concerning part of the experience was the difference between what I believed I was agreed upon during the consultation and the service I received after payment. I believed I was hiring Mr. Altman and receiving direct attorney representation. Instead, most of my communication and advocacy were handled by non-attorney staff, and communication from the assigned attorney was limited and inconsistent. I later hired another law firm that did not charge me a consultation fee. That firm took the time to understand the facts, communicated clearly, and handled the situation in a much more professional and effective manner. My issue was ultimately addressed by a different firm.

He explained all of the possible outcomes and explained his very reasonable rates. Had court yesterday. He arrived early which gave us a good amount of time to talk about the case and put my mind at ease. He spoke to the police officer and was able to get the charged changed to avoid the 60 day jail sentence and get a much more affordable fine. Wound up with no jail time and a 200$ fine. He told me it was a simple laceration and that I can go back to work and acted as if I was wasting his time or was exaggerating my symptoms which was very frustrating and unprofessional for the doctor to disregard everything I said after being out of work and mentally and physically suffering for over a month. so I began to ask him questions about her duration of the pain and numbness and why it's taking so long to heal? Also asked what happens if PT doesn't help the numbness and discomfor? his reply was "well it only happened a week ago and needs a little time for the swelling to go down and the feeling to come back". So that means the entire time he was evaluating and explaining to me it's just a simple laceratio, he was under the impression that the injury occurred 12/13 instead of the actual date of 11/13. Which I had to reiterate and plead with him that it's much more serious than just a simple laceration I also had to point out that he had the wrong date which is a full month later than he evaluated me for. So you would think he would go back to square one and reevaluate my injury and the progress of it but did absolutely nothing different other than sending me for a nerve test which should have been done in the first place and I am unable to schedule that testing until February 17 which will be over two months after the date of the injury occurred. I was very disappointed and unsatisfied with the thoroughness of the doctors evaluation. he was too worried about moving onto the next patient and rush through my appointment and questions I had for him and probably spent a total of 3 to 5 minutes with me until I was basically dismisse. The fact that the doctor thought the injury happened a week ago when in reality it was over a month ago from simply reading the wrong date on my paperwork and then refused to tell me anything different than what he already told me. looking into getting a second opinion now with someone who will hopefully have the time to give me a proper evaluation and not down play the seriousness of this injury that has kept me out of work for a month and a half now.

When I have a negative experience, I ALWAYS try to speak with the business owner and allow them to make things right before I would ever post something negative. So, I am sitting down to write this only after contacting this firm regarding my concerns on three separate occasions over the past 3 weeks. Each time, I left my name and contact info with the office staff, and each time, I was given the promise of an email and phone response by a specific date. Well, still no response. I think three weeks is certainly more than enough time. Lee was very responsive up until we paid our $5k retainer. Then he became the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain. We were passed on to Julia, another lawyer in the firm. Certainly nice, but we did not feel like she was really responsive, fighting for our case and was even perhaps a bit intimidated by the prosecuting attorney, basically suggesting we take whatever they were suggesting and not put up much of a fight. Extremely disheartening when we are talking about a case that will no doubt negatively impact the next 25+ years of an otherwise upstanding 19 yr old with his entire life ahead of him, who, in Lee's own words, "should not be defined by a single bad decision". This has been our very first and only experience with the whole criminal justice system, and has not been pleasant. Very little response from this firm, unless we initiated. Without going into too much detail, we were informed (by another lawyer not even on this case or from the Ciccarelli firm) that there was a bench warrant out for our son, and we would forfeit our $50k in bail because he failed to show up for a court hearing. Our attorney had told us he did not need to attend, yet failed to file the correct paperwork, causing the warrant to be issued. Lawyer blamed court; clerk of courts said lawyer called her, begging her to fix lawyer's mistakes, and that she (clerk) would fire lawyer if she were us. Not an easy, quick fix over the phone. Had to show up at courthouse first thing in A.M., ask to be seen by a judge to explain and hope judge will quash warrant and reinstate bail. Lee's firm sent yet another lawyer to represent, although he was only a consultant and not actually part of Lee's firm. Nice guy, but we did not ask for or need anyone to go with us really. The clerk of courts was extremely helpful and walked us through everything. We have since hired a new attorney, as we were continuously losing faith in the Ciccarelli firm over time. Had I received a response when I requested a break down of hours spent on our son's case, and an acknowledgement and listening ear from Lee regarding our experience, I would have not written this review. But I think it's important to share our experience for others considering hiring this firm, especially with them having lots of positive reviews out there as well. I'm glad others have had a positive experience, but sadly, ours was not and we would not hire them again nor would we recommend this firm.
