Stumbled upon this place when passing through Wichita. We are always on the lookout for unique foods. We drove by twice. It seriously looked like the place was abandoned. But a car in the drive through confirmed it was open. (The open sign was not illuminated.) We were in an RV so I walked up to the drive through window and they were super nice. Honest too. "Is the potato salad home made?" No. So I just ordered the bierock. The bierock are long. Not circular. About twice the size of a Runza. One is a fair meal. Two would be really hard to eat. I ordered the regular. It was divine. The bread hard and crispy on the outside but soft inside. And no doughy at all. That's hard with a stuffed pastry. The filling was really good. Perfect amount of cabbage and seasoning. Perhaps a tiny bit dry. But have a drink to go with it. The kids had ham and cheese. It's a safe bet. Lots of ham. Went to M&M Bierock to get some Bierocks which is a yeast dough pastry pocket sandwich usually filled with cabbage, onions, ground beef and seasoning which originated in Germany/Eastern Europe. You know I googled this info. It's a hole in the wall type of place. There is no inside eating area as it's drive thru only. Ordered the Ham & cheese Bierock meal with came with soda, pickle and potato chips. Also ordered the regular Bierock and the Bierock with cheese along with the baked beans. The baked beans were good but cold (maybe should have waited to warm it up at home before eating it). The regular Bierock and Bierock with cheese were also good. The Ham and cheese Bierock was the best as it had all that ham in there. Total cost was $15.50 I believe. Not bad. You come here for the food not the ambiance. Our family has been going to M & M Bierock well over 30 some years. My husband and I enjoy the beef, cabbage, and cheese. The kids tried the ham and cheese and liked them. This place is really good for some homemade kinda fare. I'm a fan of the bierock with cheese and the ham and cheese. The ham and cheese is just what it says in a bierock bun. Nothing more or less, very filling and great taste. I prefer these with mustard (have to ask generally). The original (and orig w/cheese) are tour traditional spiced bierocks with traditional, layered flavors that are very pleasant. I prefer these with ketchup and mustard, but I'm like that. I would sooooo love if they had French fries, but no. The chips are the small bags of big name yellow bag chips, which are much too salty for me. However! I find the potato salad and the baked beans very enjoyable, I do wish there was maybe a tiny bit more but I'm a hungry guy. I used to enjoy this place: simple, gritty, down to earth with good food at reasonable prices. One day though, about three hours after a satisfying bierock, chips, a pickle and a drink, I started vomiting uncontrollably. My head was spinning so much that I could not even stand. It was about 4 hours of vomiting every 10-15 minutes. At the end, I was exhausted and dehydrated, but replenished the lost fluids, slept, and woke up feeling well again. It was a distinct case of food poisoning (M and M Bierocks is where I had gotten my only meal that day, as I don't eat breakfast). I regretted the experience and never ate there again. It was disappointing because I truly loved that little place, but I do not want to relive that horrible experience again. read more

Simple and great. If your visiting Wichita, there are many choices for Bierocks around town, and this one has been around for a long long time. Definitely recommend to try one if you haven't. The building won't win any beauty awards, but it's what's on the inside that counts! Same go for Bierocks! Hamburger, cabbage, onions inside a crispy and dense flour "crust pocket" and you can even have cheese if you choose so. They are simple, filling, delicious, and definitely a good on the run food. Now the baked beans, those are really special! Amazing in fact, they have chunks of beef and onions throughout. The kind of baked beans you gotta have. In months and months of driving by this dilapidated building and empty parking lot, not once had it occurred to me that it was actually a functioning business. That is until I saw a glowing neon open sign facing west. Yet, the front door still looked barricaded... Turns out this is a drive-thru only establishment. From my recent experience with Bierocks, Brats n' BBQ, I noted the prices were similar but upon making it home with my goods, Id have to say the mass of the bierock was about 50% more. While that's appreciated on its own, What I liked even better was that it was piping hot. I can only assume this was fresh from the oven. The bread had an old time taste to it, and the traditional contents were pungent with flavor. Also available was a ham and cheese bierock that was equally satisfying. For 50 cents more you gain a wimpy pickle spear and a small knock off bag of Lays. With non dinner hours, I'm glad I finally got the chance to stop by. I had never had bierocks until I attended undergraduate school in Kansas three decades ago. I quickly grew to love these Volga German meat pies. (The humble bierock, like a Cornish pasty, is what I imagine some German Mennonite farmer filling up on early in the morning. It's THAT kind of food. Hardly what you'd call "health food.") We visited this particular (very shabby looking) place on our last trip up to Kansas. (I won't lie to you about one fact: namely, we tend to go south to Texas far more often than we venture up north into Kansas.) I'm glad we stopped in. (A local told us about this place.) It has all the ambience of Buffalo Bill's basement, yes, but the food offered is solid, cheap, delicious, and filling. Expect neither a charming atmosphere (see comment above) nor effusively friendly customer service here. (No, seriously. You're here for the food. Keep repeating that mantra to yourself.) The cheese bierock here, is very good. (My husband of almost a quarter of a century chose a cheese for one of his two bierocks, and we both found it very tasty.) You'd be forgiven for assuming the dilapidated and shuttered restaurant at 2065 E. Central has been closed for some time. After all, who could guess that the insidiously simple signage promising bierocks and a drive-thru window was, in fact, all you need to know about the place in four-ish words? Drive up to the window when the small "open" sign is flashing and you'll be presented with three choices: a regular bierock, a bierock with cheese, and a ham and cheese bierock. Like the crumbly burger, the bierock is a quintessential piece of Kansas' culinary history that hasn't achieved much acclaim outside the Great Plains. Perhaps its simplicity also serves as its hindrance towards widespread adoption: people today are looking for more than just ground beef. Thankfully, the bierock's eastern European heritage and its more recent Midwestern home have allowed for the inclusion of cabbage and cheese, respectively. It's the best way to proceed here: the slightly sour cabbage provides some depth of flavor while the melted American cheese provided salt and a satisfyingly gooey texture. Like everything with bierocks, ground beef seasoning is kept simple, though the heavy dose of black pepper makes M & M's bierocks distinctive. The elongated spheroid of bread that encompasses the filling is larger than you might find at the remaining restaurants in town that serve the dish, but the sweet dough was well-cooked and an appropriate vessel for eating in your car without fear of dripping on your shirt. This simple, effective, and straightforward approach has done owner Mary Morain well enough to keep business rolling since 2007, though it still doesn't explain the mystery of why the sit-down restaurant never opens its doors to customers. For that, it's necessary to go back nearly twenty years: in 1995 one of the previous owners of the business was assaulted in the parking lot. The elderly victim and the rest of the family-run business were deeply affected, and the restaurant has been drive-thru only ever since. I asked Morain if she had any inclination towards opening up to walk-in customers again, but with significant repairs required to bring it up to code, it's unlikely, especially when the price of the bierocks have only increased a quarter over the past decade. It's probably just as well - the restaurant remains as one of the best remaining purveyors of bierocks in a city that's rapidly progressing beyond its ground beef beginnings. This place does look a little cutty. It didn't look open when we pulled up, and one side of the building has all the windows covered with ratty bed sheets for curtains. The bierocks, however, are SOLID and CHEAP. My dad and I ordered (and crushed) five of them. My only regret is not trying the pickles, because i bet they are good. Love bierocks. I remember when I was a kid I would get so excited when my mom made these. These bierocks are nice and soft when melting cheese over the crumbly hamburger with cabbage and lots of black pepper. You go through the drive through and tell them which bierocks you want and you can get plain old potato chips and pickle with a combo. read more

These are the best bierocks in town! They are traditional, real, quality bierocks- why mess with success? For those who don't know, a beirock is a sort of meat pie- a combination of ground beef, onions, kraut (or cabbage?), spices, and sometimes cheese is baked in bread dough crust.
