I think the DRT have preserved that story in a dignified and educational manner. Resting on 4.2 acres the Alamo, built as a mission in 1718, offers the church.exhibit hall (an original building now displaying artifacts), the Long Barrack Museum, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library (worth visiting), the Alamo Gardens and the Alamo Gift Shop for viewing. No smoking and gentlemen please remove your hats in respect. Free and paid guided tours are available usually on the hour. Information plaques are scattered about, he most important of which is the Wall of History. They also have daily reenactments. The re-enactors will answer questions. I would my start my visit by watching the History Channel Documentary in the Clara Driscoll Theatre. The entire experience is free. An audio tour is available for $7 and I highly recommend that you purchase it, especially for nerds like myself who want more substance. The tour includes 28 different points of interest. There is a terrific timeline which includes the periods both before and after the battle at the Alamo. The siege lasted from February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836. The actual fighting lasted only 90 minutes. Be sure to see the model of the Alamo to get a realistic scale of the mission. The surrounding streets have markers that show the scale of the original dimensions. I have issues with the parking which is either metered street parking or offsite garage parking in downtown San Antonio. Although parking is within walking distance to the Alamo, there are major roads to cross. The Ripley's Believe It or Not is across the street which diminishes the dignity of this historic site. No photos can be taken in the church. The church is original while other buildings are reconstructions. Group photos are taken but fortunately you do not have to purchase them. Restrooms are limited especially for the ladies. Can you say long lines. You might want to go across the street and find restrooms on the River Walk. As others have noted, the gift shop has too large of a presence in my opinion.
