The flavor is always on point, and I appreciate that they don't overdo the spice, it's balanced perfectly. The portions are generous, so you actually leave full. They were both steak and shrimp burritos, shrimp was large and tasty. The steak was pretty dry. The fries in the Cali burrito were nice and crispy. I liked adding the creamy sauce they had at the bar and their red salsa to the burrito. It definitely needed it, it was a little plain without it. There is very little seating, next door is the same restaurant but is a sit down restaurant with a bar. You can order food or drinks at either, they have a window they pass food and drinks through. My fault for not coming here as often. I really wanted a quick lunch and I was specifically wanting rolled tacos and popped into Lupe's. I normally get these or fish tacos but today was rolled tacos with chicken. I think three is plenty. It comes with almost a mini salad underneath- fresh lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese. I enjoy the salsa that they serve with it. Counter service is very nice and friendly. Plenty of parking out front. Cool mellow vibes with the TV going. Self serve salsa, bar and soda fountain. Next-door is the full service restaurant which also has the restroom. Overall great experience I'm gonna come back a lot sooner than last time and try some new things. We were traveling through the area and saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed. We had an app of taquittos which were good. It came with some salsa and guacamole to dip in. I ordered a buritto that had steak and shrimp in it. It was very good. It came with a side of chips. Two others had California burritos and seemed to enjoy them. They brought us over 4 bottles of sauce to use as well. There was a red chili, a tomatillo, a creamy cilantro and a smoked chipotle sauce. Lots of breakfast burrito options and I would have gladly eaten any of them. There are lots of interesting taco and non-breakfast burrito options. They also apparently have booze, ceviche, quesadillas, and more. I tried the Lupe's burrito (carne asada, chicken, and more) and it was good. The bacon in it added another dimension of flavor. The guacamole was, unfortunately, all slopped in at the bottom. Overall, it was a good, but not a great, burrito. It mostly tasted like a decent carne asada burrito with bacon. I probably should have gone for a pastor burrito like many other reviews have recommended. The shrimp burrito was very good and had a lot of flavor. It was absolutely stuffed with juicy shrimp. I loved this one. The tacos are things of beautiful. We tried a shrimp quesotaco and a beer battered fish taco. The shrimp taco was the better of the two. Don't miss the salsa bar. The salsa with the little sign that says "very hot" isn't joking. The nuclear green cilantro salsa is excellent and very flavorful. The chipotle one was nice, too. I give this place a 4.5 but, as usual, I round up. It is a bit expensive but this is Dana Point and, look, the economy sucks right now and prices are high everywhere. Unfortunately the menu has changed up a bit and not for the better. Tried their crispy beef tacos and all I got at the very bottom was some hot sauce and no beef. Sure the taco was filled to the brim with lots of lettuce. And I mean a lot of lettuce and some cheese on top of course. I'm not sure what happened here but I would definitely not recommend the crispy beef tacos u less u want a lettuce taco topped with a sprinkle of cheese. I also tried the wings, and just ok. Location was divided into 2. But the service by Nick was amazing! I started with one server, but his family showed up and I didn't see him again. Nick came over and instantly knew I needed water and noticed I wasn't happy with a dish. But waited patiently until someone came by. He quickly took care of it and offered great alternatives! First time visiting LaBarra/Lupe's Mexican Eatery & saw Lupe's sign so I entered not knowing it was the To Go area of Lupe's. I felt horrible for keeping the other patrons patiently waiting while I was deciding what to order. I didn't see that Lupe's Mexican Eatery on the left was a ToGo line where people know what they want. I hope they make it clearer so that locals don't get frustrated w.a new customer. Eventually the cashier asked if I want to dine in. He was very professional & kind & then suggested I enjoy my sit down meal next door at LaBarra. This cashier had the courtesy to not give attitude but was sincerely patient with me as a 1st time patron. Kudos to the staff at La Barra/Lupe's. Orders: Birria Burrito- a good sized burrito initially sparse on the 1st bite, but as you take a few more bites the deliciously marinated meat magically appears. 2 Taco's: Beer Battered Fish had a wonderfully flaky batter with a generous amount of sour cream & salsa. I love a wet taco, so La Barra satisfied intact craving. Service was superb with both waitress & waiter who enjoy what they do to make customers feel welcomed. I don't come here as much though because the prices are astronomical. $16 for a burrito is pretty insane for Southern California. And $25 for Stoner Fries (carne asada fries with a couple pieces of shrimp)? Seriously? Would be 5/5 stars if it wasn't for the prices. I'm sitting here right now with a burrito from The Taco Stand in Newport Beach, looking at their pickled onions, and it honestly made me stop and think about how far your restaurant has drifted from what once made it great. For years, I was a loyal customer. I paid good, hard-earned money because you offered something different--quality food, a real salsa bar, and an experience that felt worth it. Taking away the salsa bar wasn't just a small change; it removed one of the main reasons people kept coming back. On top of that, prices went up, and the value went down. The Taco Stand offers everything you used to--and more--at a significantly better price. I'm looking at their menu right now: a shrimp and steak burrito for $11.89. The food is better, the prices are more reasonable, and most importantly, they don't punish loyal customers by stripping away what made the place special just to protect profit margins. I haven't been back to your restaurant in over a year because of these changes, and I can confidently say I won't be returning. It's disappointing, because you had something great. Unfortunately, a greedy approach to customer service--or lack thereof--pushed me to find a superior alternative. Thank you for the years of good meals. Carnitas: decent, not crunchy enough to quench my beloved taste buds. Surf and turf: so yummy, make Tommy J smile. Birria: yummy yummy for my tummy. The search for the best breakfast burrito in the San Clemente Tri-State Metropolitan Area lead me to Lupes in Dana Point. I was in Mission Viejo early one morning and decided to look for a breakfast burrito around there but then reminded myself, "I don't care about breakfast burritos in MV, I need to seek them out in my own territory." So I set my Yelp searching to the Dana Point / Capo Beach area and stumbled upon Lupes. As I stood at the counter looking at the menu on the wall above, I was asked if I wanted to order and I replied that I wanted to look over my options. Where were the breakfast burritos listed on the wall menu? After seeing some mention of Cali Breakfast under Burritos, but no descriptions, I asked if they had a paper menu and the counter person pointed at a laminated menu book on the counter. While they had more breakfast burrito options listed, there were no descriptions. One was called a Dolphin Burrito. What was in it? Dolphin? So this handheld menu was as useless as the wall menu. Still wondering, other people ordered and they apparently had a copy of the secret menu with descriptions or had been here before and knew what they wanted. I stepped up to the counter and said I wanted a breakfast burrito so what were my choices. The server, seeming a bit annoyed, told me that the Dolphins burrito was the most popular breakfast burrito choice. I nervously asked, "what's in it?" She listed the ingredients quickly, so I only caught eggs and sausage. Were there other breakfast burrito options? I decided to just go with the most popular so I did not further annoy the person and I could move on to my breakfast. I did clarify that it contained sausage AND bacon. Cool. I ordered the Dolphin or Dolphins burrito, paper menu and wall menu did not match, and a fountain drink. In hindsight I should have looked on their website, as there are very clear descriptions if the breakfast burrito options. The Dolphin(s) Breakfast Burrito is Eggs, Cheese, Sausage, Bacon, Hash Browns and Sour Cream. Yum, sounds good. Pro Tip: Before you go to Lupes go on the website and click on "Order Online" and check out the descriptions of their food. For your convenience I added a screenshot to this review. After ordering I got diet coke and then saw the salsa bar. COOL! I love salsas, for that matter almost any sauce. My montra is "Food was invented to have something to put sauce on." The salsa bar has little tubs you can spill salsa into. Verde, Chipotle, Cilantro Cream, Habanero. Also Habanero Onions. I took tubs of the Verde, Chipotle and Cilantro Cream. Each one was GREAT. Not good, not OK, GREAT. You get some chips with your burrito, so my first task was to taste each sauce. So, so, so good. I didn't have a favorite since they were all tasty. As I sat awaiting my burrito, I watched as others came in and experienced the same order confusion I had. I am now assuming that the order person was annoyed since every person came in had to ask a bunch of questions to figure out what they wanted to order. I could see how that would become frustrating over time. Maybe a menu with more details would help, but hey I'm no restaurateur. Would have been a 5 star review. The burrito, with some chips, was delivered to my table and I immediately liked the looks as it was grilled and I prefer that with my burritos. To get a good look at my burrito I used a plastic knife to split it in half and that was almost catastrophic to this beauty of a burrito. I did recover and the pictures are attached. It looked good. It had hash browns inside and that is what I prefer. The bacon and sausage were plentiful and the eggs were nicely scrambled showing all yellow and not a white/yellow mixture. To get the full taste, I do not use any sauce or salsas in my first couple of bites. The first bite was awesome as were the next several bites. I was not sure if I would use any salsas since this burrito was one of the BEST breakfast burritos I have every had. Ever. Top 5, maybe top 2? Dang, this was near perfect. After some other bites I did try each of the salsas on the burrito and they were all great combos with this delicious burrito. After devouring the first half of the burrito, I packed up the other half, refilled my salsa tubs and brought this baby home for a next day breakfast. As good the next day! As I walking out I peaked into the kitchen area and said to the cooks, "This was one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had. EVER." If you want a GREAT breakfast burrito, head over to Lupes and order the Dolphin(s) burrito. Go now, do not delay. This offer does not expire. Are you still reading this? But the only reason I don't complain about the cost of the food, or the fact you ALWAYS forget my side of sour cream (that I've always paid extra for with no complaint when I don't get it) is the proportions used to be decent. I had to go next door to use the restroom and I couldn't eat there even though is part of the same place.
