It's pretty cool, but many things can be found at other stores, too, even mainstream ones. When walking in, it was extremely busy with a lot of people. The store is small, and the aisles are not wide, so it's important to know that going in because you will most likely have many people in your way if you look at something for a while. I honestly felt a little rushed because of everyone there and walking up and down aisles in front or in back of me. Because many of the snack bags are in a different language, it's important not to rush when buying anything, especially if you are allergic to any specific ingredient. Many of the snacks do have pictures of what flavor they are, just as snacks in America do. For example, if it had a picture of a watermelon, it's watermelon flavor. If there was a picture of a chili pepper, it's spicy. You get the point. Everything sold has the original packaging as it would in the country of origin. The cool thing about this store is that since different countries sell different flavors of common brands we know in America, they sell them in one place. For example, if you love oreos, they have tons of different flavors that are from different countries that they don't sell here in America. Same with KitKat and different brands of chips like Lay's, Cheetos, etc. I ended up buying the Waffle Cone snack and the matcha Pocky. As you can see in the photos attached, the Waffle Cone snack is a product of Turkey, and the Pocky is a product of Japan. I bought things that I'm sure you can find elsewhere, but they do have cool items that you most likely can't. As I said before, TAKE YOUR TIME when walking around the store because you can walk around the store 6 times and will still miss something. There's so much! Just a tip: The prices didn't seem too bad for what I bought, but not everything seemed to have labels, which stopped me from buying certain items I found. I also found some products that were expired, so just check everything just in case. Not many things I found were expired, but I check dates no matter where I am. The owner is very nice! He was our chekout person, and he told us that they are opening a new location soon in Harwood Heights and that they get new items all the time. My family and I visit here often every year and we like to try the different foods and desserts and then check out the bookstore and grocery store afterwards. My favorite foods so far have been the beef udon soup with a soft boiled egg, shrimp and vegetable tempura, miso soup, and Japanese curry with rice, beef, and vegetables (carrots and potatoes). My son always gets the chicken and beef on a stick and my daughter usually gets a garlic pork dish with white rice but I forget what this dish is called. My husband also enjoys the beef udon soup like I do. I swear that whenever my food is finished, I am legit sad! The crepes are good, there is a variety of boba teas to try, and the ice creams are delicious! Lychee has been my favorite so far but I have yet to try the matcha, red bean, among others! You can get a small sample of different ice cream flavors too, which is nice! I sampled the red bean flavor so that will be my go-to next time! At the grocery store, I love buying Happy Turn snacks which are like a sweet and salty crunchy cracker (maybe it is made of rice?) that are individually wrapped and mochi from the fridge area. Finally, I usually like to buy mochi from the store right next to the bookstore. The mochi from this location is the best! I usually buy multiple flavors to take home and eat at a later time! My kids love checking out the bookstore and they usually pick something out for me to buy for them - whether it is a book, keychain, etc. There are magazines, anime figurines, soft plushy toys, pens, and stationary, etc. It is interesting to browse through the things they have there! You cannot bring food or drinks inside but they do have a shelf at the entrance where you can place your drink there if you like. The first time visiting here, the majority of the customers were Asians and as the years have passed, there is now more of an influx of non-Asians who simply love the food and appreciate the culture, which I think is neat! The first time I visited here was with my college roommate who was from Japan and she recommended this place back in 2009 perhaps? I have been visiting ever since with my family. We travel more than an hour from Wisconsin to come here but it is 100% worth the drive! Also, the cashiers and workers there are quick, efficient, and friendly. I have even been able to practice a few of the Japanese phrases I have learned with a couple of the cashiers too (I asked if they spoke Japanese first)! Overall, Mitsuwa is my happy place! Great food, interesting finds, different culture, and everyone there looks excited to be there. This is as close to visiting Japan as I can get until I keep learning more Japanese and save up enough money to go visit Japan someday! This is my dream! In the meantime, we will keep visiting Mitsuwa!

It was only AFTER that I found out that they have another location in Uptown, a mile from my house. Apparently they've been in the shopping center across from the Broadway post office for about four years now, but I never had a clue. I liked this location more not just because of the convenience factor of being in my neighborhood, but also because it's a lot more comfortable to shop. The aisles were much larger so you weren't squeezing by folks when trying to see all the goodies. The produce and fish/meat sections also seem much larger. So overall the store has a bigger footprint than the one in Chinatown. They also had merchandise at this store that I didn't see at the other, such as woks, bowls, and other such items. Parking is so-so. The parking lot itself isn't necessarily small, but there's a lot of businesses that share this lot and some of the spots are marked specifically for those businesses. For instance, the medical office here has about 10 spaces that are for their patients only. But given the location it's within a few blocks of the Wilson station, the Argyle station, and (when renovation is complete) the Lawrence station, as well as the bus lines, so there's lots of options for getting here if driving isn't your choice.
