We arrived tired and super stressed after just driving through a horrific hail and tornado storm in North Texas. In addition to the storm and possible hail damage on our roof, our AC compressor gave out so we had no AC. I had called the park earlier because I wasn't sure we'd make it by closing and was assured (by Chris) there were "many spaces" available and to "come in in" and that he will "come around." We arrived, I checked the reserved spots on the board, grabbed the map and registration envelope and went to see what our choices were. Husband picked one and I immediately got out to go pay (I had paperwork in my hand) and this nasty, ill-tempered man rolled up on a golf cart and berated me for entering the park. This was after he earlier told me to "come on in" and that he will "come around." He then told us we had to move our RV and that no dogs are allowed in the front section of the park which seems odd as the rules do not indicate that at all. Due to his rude, nasty and unwelcoming temperament we decided to leave and then he got even nastier and more rude. Too bad because we wanted to check out the town, we left town due to his aggressive and bullying behavior. Unfortunate way to end our 4000 mile road trip.

They have some really cool stuff that other road stop sites do not have plus they have a Dairy Queen. Anyway, the staff is very friendly and one guy in particular by the name of Ron who helped me out tremendously. He had a wealth of knowledge regarding pretty much everything in the store, especially fireworks. You know, it seems like customer service these days is almost nonexistent, but this place proved me wrong again. Gas station and Restrooms were clean. this will be one of my stops from here out when I come through town.

I was choosing a souvenir t shirt to buy. She stormed off, to the cash register, & I heard her grumbling about messing up the t-shirts, and saying "I have to fold every goddamn t-shirt!" She snarled at me, & said she tried to help me, but I wouldn't listen, & she didn't appreciate me "messing up" her t-shirts. I only looked at 2 of them, and she acted like I ransacked the whole table. I told her that I'm a customer, & she shouldn't talk this way to me, & that I'm not buying anything due to her bad attitude. So, it's definitely not a "welcome" center. These towns along Rt. 66, get visitors from all over the world, especially now, with the 100 year anniversary. The Rt. 66 Welcome center could improve by having someone who is pleasant, and helpful, to provide information about Tucumcari, so travelers can plan their time there. So, skip this place, if you're looking for souvenirs. Some of the restaurants (like Del's) and the vintage motels have gift items that they sell. Or, try the Curio shop across the street.

Leigh was able to schedule our remarriage for that following Saturday. We were greeted with professionalism and great care. We were provided with witnesses and our officiate who are also fellow business owners. Our wedding ceremony was everything we had hoped it would be from ceiling to floor beautiful (and calming) decorations. Our photos were gorgeous and our "bubble send off" was so much fun! Our second walk down the aisle was even more meaningful and our officiate Yvonne knew just what to say which was exactly what was in our hearts and minds. The place has that old-school charm -- from the neon sign glowing against the night sky to vintage machines that look straight out of a retro arcade. They've got a few fun throwbacks inside, like weight and horoscope machines and classic candy boxes that'll make you feel like you time-traveled to the 1950s. Just don't expect much in the way of snacks or souvenirs -- the offerings are pretty minimal. And fair warning: those fortune machines might take your coin and your curiosity but won't actually spit out a fortune (mine's still pending). On the plus side, the bathrooms were clean, which is the real gold star of any road trip stop! Overall, it's worth a quick stretch, photo, and nostalgia fix before hitting the road again.
