We have gone through the frustrating journey of doctors, speech therapists and occupational therapists for feeding therapy both on our own, through insurance but really couldn't find the "right" match for our son. Someone suggested the regional center and once we got the ball rolling it's been an amazing experience. Scheduling an initial evaluation can take some time, luckily it only took a few weeks for us but I've heard other parents say it took longer. After the initial evaluation we set up an in home meeting with his service coordinator to go over the eval and see what services he qualified for. We were lucky enough to qualify for both OT for feeding therapy and a speech therapist weekly both in our home. We'd previously tried in office and clinical setting and it did not work well for our little one. We were matched with an AMAZING feeding therapist, Becky from End Picky Eating and have been working with her for a few weeks. I can't speak highly enough about her and the way she interacts with our little guy. We begin speech therapy on Tuesday and hope to have another great match! During our sit down with the service coordinator we were able to also request a vision test. When we went in for that, as we were leaving they had an immediate opening for a quick dental exam and we were able to also do that. I have been very impressed with the attentiveness and efficiency of the San Diego Regional center and very thankful for the help it's providing my son!

It was helpful that they let us know which milestones we should work toward each quarter so that I always had an accurate idea of his progress. They are always super nice and helpful getting all my box's out of the car. While driving into the lot I noticed a plaque with a dedication name for the 805 freeway. It was dedicated in 1981 to Jake Dekema. He served California as the Director of Transportation for 25 years. Because of you, homeless women and children have the ability to re-build to their lives and start anew at the haven you provide for them. Their program offers transitional structured group housing, food and onsite education for parenting teens and their children that had to turn to this organization due to unfortunate circumstances. I was told that many of the young girls that reside here often are victims of rape, abuse or incest when they are referred by the courts or foster care. Very sad... According to their website, with career counseling, the women focus on finding a job, learn to budget and save 80% of their income. A six-month follow-up study shows that 92% of the center's graduates are still in permanent housing, a figure 31% higher than the US Department of Housing And Urban Development's expected standard. Impressive, huh? How did I learn of the Door of Hope? I got a call from my good friend James who also happens to be a Makeup Artist as well. He was recruited by his friend, Antonella Annibale (and M.A. to the stars, I might add), and asked if I also wanted to volunteer my time/service for some teens that were asked to attend prom but had no means of getting their hair/makeup done for the event. Of course I said yes without hesitation. Amongst us group of volunteers were also two hairstylists that did beautiful updos on the girls. They had been through so much in their young lives, yet were so determined to make a better future for themselves and their children...even though they were virtually children themselves. When we finished the transformations, it was the best feeling hearing the squeals of delight at how pretty they looked and how they would knock everyone dead at the prom. A few weeks later, I received a thank you card signed by all the girls. So sweet. These girls were amazing to work with and I look forward to volunteering my time when they need me again. I think my participation did more for me then it did for them in all honesty. Today I finally got the opportunity to check out the campus and then attended the 11:00 a.m. Sunday church service. I liked Horizon very much--the congregants seemed friendly and there were good vibes. I do not want to compare it to the church I usually go to, as far as the worship music goes. My preference is for a flashier rock music worship which gets me more in the mood for some good sermonizing. Horizon's is a very basic set-up, with a singer who plays the electric piano and a lady cellist. Nice but I need more pizzazz. Deduct 1 YELP STAR. The best part of Horizon: Mike MacIntosh. Pastor of Horizon for 36 years & just the right amount of Bible-thumping mixed in with some funny asides and personal family notes. I love that immediately we turned to Romans 8 and got right into the scriptural readings. After a prayer and amen, the Pastor read a few passages and then immediately explained what they meant to the congregation. Now this is not something all that unique, but some churches will open up the Bible, read one verse, and then the Pastor will pontificate ad nauseum the rest of the service. No, I want to get some book learning done on Sunday mornings. Breaking down Romans 8 into digestible passages and then doing explanations and some historical asides thrown in for good measure made for a perfect lesson in what Paul was actually trying to to say to the Romans regarding spiritual man versus sinful man. Could be that Pastor Mike was trained up in the Calvary Chapel method and that might account for a more literary reading of the scriptures. Next week for Easter, Pastor MacIntosh will be holding services outside in the Quad area. I think that should be nice since I noticed that the Horizon Church area is really just the school gymnasium decked out on Sunday with a stage and a mic stand. It was disconcerting listening to the sermon and looking up above for some heavenly guidance only to see basketball nets hoisted above the gathered pious crowd of Clairemont worshipers.

The people that I have meet with that are in the program are really nice and helpful. Of course, there are rules and guidelines that you must follow, this is a program to help you get your life in order and the program classes count as hours needed for cal-works. They have done a lot of remodeling and the place is looking really good. The playground has been fixed and is now safe for the little ones to play. They have put in BBQ and a nice picnic area to eat in. The Church/dining hall has been cleaned up and looking nice. The room that I share is okay. I have a nice clean bed to sleep on with my son. There is a mini frig in the room, No microwave, TV with cable and lots of shelf space. The only problem that I have is that when taking a shower the water goes from hot to cold in a blink of an eye but it's not that big of a deal. I have come across a couple of bugs but I just put out some bug traps and they're gone. I'm feeling happy and blessed to be here with my son. I'm thankful for everyone who decided to take a chance on me and letting us into the program; even after reading first review on ECTLC. The truth of the matter here is that, I am honest about what I experience about the place I'm reviewing. If you are not versed in finances you are literally screwed. Stop following people when they go to Albertsons. It's creepy! AsF! I always looked over my shoulder when I left campus. Also the staff members will literally end up where you are going, bcuz they take back roads. It's EXTREMELY creepy and unsettling. The people in the program are not too nice ..they believe the gossip that goes around that place. They will clique up against you and talk smack. Go to your social media and take screenshots of your posts in order to start drama. Do I think this place has value? No not at all. Instead of kicking said staff member out, she was allowed to stay in the same dorm with me where the abuse continued. Towards the end of my stay there she finally ceased. Overall I wouldn't recommend this program to anyone.

The staff were clearly committed to their cause and cared about the residents in their facilities. I always felt this group to be professional and respectful. The residents were a charming group of diverse individuals, they were always eager to practice art and were a pleasure to visit. I lead a series of on-site art classes which practiced color theory, still life painting and drawing exercises. Lessons were provided as a starting point for those unfamiliar with art practice but I also encouraged the residents to pursue their own forms of artistic expression. Completed artworks were put on display the shared community space and several pieces were included in an art show / charity event benefiting Townspeople.

Use caution when waiting and follow the directions of the staff carefully. The food provided is free of charge when you qualify.

Once you check in, they ask for your last name and you enter the room and sit there for the brief orientation. The day I came to volunteer, they started about 15-20 minutes late. This volunteer shift was only 2 hours. It was an assembly line and it was a lot of fun but very very fast pace. I appreciate the big fan because it got hot quick. I did get a cut on my finger and was able to take a short break to put a band aid on it. Everyone there was nice. Once the volunteer shift is done, they will tell you how many boxes of food was filled. And that day, we did 600 boxes! Whenever I'm back in town, I will volunteer again!
