I don't know where to start because I only have amazing things to say and there aren't enough words to express my gratitude. Today I passed my behind the wheel as an adult driver. First try! Growing up, I had strict parents who wanted to keep me home and never taught me to drive. All the times I attempted to, I would just lock up and have so much anxiety and it caught on to me. I always took care of everyone growing up and this was the one thing I needed to accomplish for myself. I woke up one day and said enough is enough and having a 2 year old son who has soooo much energy and needs to go to park at least twice a day, that was my motivation. Long is an amazing instructor. He is attentive, asks about your goals and how you want to achieve them, great executor, and most of all a great communicator. I got the 10 hour package and I learned more than I would've learning on my own or with my husband. Every lesson breezed by and Long made me comfortable along with giving me constructive criticism without judgement. My favorite part of our lessons was the beautiful views he showed me which opened up my eyes and motivated to get my license and see what else is out there! Attempting to get your license as an adult can be a challenge. Personally speaking, there was a lot of anxiety and some level of shame that I didn't have my license. When I finally decided to go for it, I did my due diligence to look for the right instructor. Long seemed to fit the bill, so I booked him for the 5 lesson package and I'm glad I did. I explained to Long during our first meeting that I had little to no driving experience so he was molding me from scratch. Lesson 1 wasn't bad, but after a gap between the next one, lesson 2 was a particularly rough one for me. Here's where Long earned his keep and his sterling reputation. After what could've been a discouraging moment for me, Long took the time to reflect with me after the lesson and figure out what might have gone wrong and what he needed to do as an instructor to help me. I got my driver's license in 2020. We were in the middle of the COVID pandemic and the streets were quite empty. I paid for driving lessons then (from a different driving school) and practiced the precise route of my driving test. Of course, I passed my test the first time. And I mean, with no cars around and doing my driving test by memory, it was all pretty easy. The problem was: I had a license but I had zero confidence in my reflexes, my coordination, my ability to assess different situations on the road, my judgment to read other drivers or to make appropriate decisions ahead of time, let alone parallel park. At that point, driving on the freeway was just completely out of reach. Just a simple trip to the store a few blocks away from my house was enough to flood me with anxiety and my hands shaking. I had a license but I didn't have the basics. My friends would tell me that all I needed to was "throw myself there" and drive. But I just didn't have the knowledge or practice to make that happen. I tried to do it on my own for the rest of 2020 and most of 2021 with no success at all. Late last year I got into graduate school. During the Fall quarter, I commuted to school. I had to walk 30 minutes to the train station then take the train and then take a shuttle to school. The whole trip took about 2.5 hours one way. I'd leave my house in the morning and passed by my car parked outside my house, getting dusty. I'm a smart and dedicated person, but how come I was so afraid of driving? It was all very frustrating. So late last year, I realized I needed help and contacted LDT Driving School. Long was responsive and punctual. During our initial session, Long went through all the basics of safe driving and shared with me easy techniques to stay in my lane, make safe turns, even parallel park! He is patient, knowledgeable, and all in all, a great teacher. It is very clear that he loves what he's doing because his enthusiasm is contagious. Long knows the roads and knows the peninsula quite well. He even showed me routes to reach the beach and other touristic places I could go to. He planted the seed of how fun road trips could be. Someone else would've done their job, and got me to memorize routes just like that other driving school did and leave it at that. But Long went above and beyond so I could feel confident and empowered to explore and go wherever the heck I want. Freedom :) As an adult driver (42 years old), I never imagined that I'd be comfortable behind the wheel. I'm driving myself to school every day. I'm taking myself and my loved ones to fun places and soon I'll explore some trails. I highly recommend purchasing the 10-hour package. While you'll see an immense improvement in just one lesson, if you're like me -with driving anxiety levels to the max, the class series is the way to go. Long will be able to teach you and challenge you so you're comfortable on the streets, freeways, highways, and bridges. He'll give you all the skills you need to navigate any area safely. We had Long for our oldest child, and everything was fine. For our second child, we had difficulties getting our son to drive as he is a serious competitor and had practice most days after school. After our son got his permit renewed, I reached out to Long to schedule the remaining lessons. Long offered us a window of 6:30-8:30 a.m. the next day. I hired Long since I am an adult driving student - never had a license until today (12/10/21). (Literally just came back from the DMV, passing on my first try for the behind the wheel test). At first - I was not sure if Long was a good instructor because of the lack of reviews on Yelp. I hired Long because no other driving schools had instructors available at the time (only about 1.5 weeks ago). After having a terrible previous experience with a driving school, I put off learning to drive for a very long time. Eventually life caught up with me and I had to learn how to drive, kicking and screaming the whole way. The LT website is easy to navigate and I was able to schedule sessions and pay online for lessons, which a lot of other driving schools don't do. I signed up with LT because they had good reviews and provided a nice website interface. Talking to Lana at the call center was also prompt and effective. Lessons were always on time. Long has very high energy and it's clear that he's rooting for your success. He's very chatty and talks to you deliberately so that you can learn to drive while being distracted. We had a lot of fun conversations. He was always patient and worked around my multiple issues (number dyslexia, dyscalculia, anxiety, and ADHD). He was honest with feedback but never in a mean way. He never made me feel bad for making mistakes and when I became frustrated with myself he was very kind. I improved with every lesson, even when I felt that I was having a bad day behind the wheel. Long is very familiar with the peninsula, very knowledgeable in general, and we worked specifically to be familiar with the DMV behind the wheel test routes for San Mateo and Daly City. I took the test at the San Mateo DMV and passed it on my first try, which I am still amazed at but hey, I had a good teacher. Donny accompanied me for the DMV behind the wheel test portion and gave me a short practice session beforehand. He was nice, patient, and had a relaxed/reserved energy. If Long's enthusiastic style doesn't work for you, try working with Donny. I was gonna rate this 1 star but since he gave me a full refund... I had my first class with LT in June and the second class was delayed because of me having covid and him also having covid, giving me about a month's gap between my two lessons. When I had my second class with him yesterday, July 28,2022, I informed him I have been practicing with my partner for a month for a few hours every day, but was aware that that is not enough - that's why I'm continuing my lessons with him (if I was confident enough, then I could've just not taken the second class at all, saving my time and energy). He commented 'good for you' and I thought he was being genuine. When we were just starting out our driving, of course I was far from perfect with my turns, looking at blind spots, etc., he quickly started making comments such as 'you're very sloppy!' multiple times and also made a comment about my partner saying something like 'well, he's not a good driver huh' based on my driving, as if he knows him personally. I don't mind constructive criticism, but his comments showed a lack of restraint, patience, and a failure to understand a) the gap between instructed lessons we had, and b) how to work with student drivers as a whole. With me as a first time driver that is an immigrant that has never driven her whole life and moved 1000 miles away from her home country to get this opportunity to drive and gain even a taste sort of independence, I was almost in tears and I answered 'well I never said I was good at it, nor do you have to call me sloppy.' Imagine focusing all your attention at the road, scared and anxious around the cars and the driver instructor who, ideally you trust, makes comments like that on your second lesson. In my head, I thought, does he say these comments to his younger students who MIGHT be more vulnerable than me? (I'm 24 y.o. - imagine how discouraged I am to even begin my driving lessons at this age). Mr. Long was imperative about communication but failed to have his actions run parallel with his words - he would be on his phone while I'm driving and I would have to ask him what to do next - I'd imagine a driving instructor would be just as keen, if not more than their student, on how to pay attention to the road. He also made a similar comment - 'you have a problem with following instructions.' Once again, this was my 2nd lesson, I am human and am still adjusting, trying to figure it out. For sure there are different clients with different characteristics and I believe instructors should be more professional, patient, and aware of different learning speeds. Perhaps my preference for a patient, understanding, and pragmatic instructor did not fall in line with his teaching style. TLDR; I read all the stellar yelp reviews of him - that's why I trusted him to be my instructor, but I will not burden another student with a similar experience I had with Mr. Long. I will never take classes with him again. read more
