I attended Milton Hershey School from 1997 until 2010. I was five when I first arrived at the…read moreschool and eighteen when I left. It's far too complicated to thoroughly review the school, as I feel that it would require a more nuanced approach to truly summarize my experience. I will try my best to provide a high-level overview of the school, while maintaining some level of brevity. The school has undergone many changes since its inception, but there are some consistent elements that warrant being highlighted. The school has always covered the complete cost of food, clothing, housing, schooling, medical, and dental needs for every single child who is admitted. The campus is very large and well maintained. There are three schools on campus; elementary, middle, and high school. There are also health centers, environmental centers, clothing/facility centers, horticulture centers, learning resource centers, medical clinics, dental clinics, and fitness facilities, also all located on the campus. The students at the school reside in student homes that are overseen by houseparents. When I was at the school, there were about twelve students in each home. Each house is provided transportation in the form of a large van suitable for transporting every member of the household. Each home has a kitchen, dining room, recreational room, office, living room, computer room, houseparent apartment, bathrooms, mud room, basketball court, and parking garage. Students in their final year at the school participate in a program called Transitional Living. The objective of this program is to provide some exposure to a college-style version of living. Another intention of the program is to instill some independent living skills in the students and hopefully increase the likelihood of success post graduation. There are various career pathways that high school students can participate in, some of which include, automotive, health occupation, human services, information technology, carpentry, graphic design and business marketing. The career pathways are intended to provide occupational experience prior to college/tech school, which is also paid for by the school. The school changed my life in many ways, for better and worse. I like to weigh out this particular experience with heconsideration to the various opportunities that I was given while attending the school, and from that perspective, I can say that the experience was generally a positive one and likely did more good than harm.

She raised her voice and discontinued the call by saying byeeee. I called back. The attitude continued. To say this place lacks professionalism is an understatement. The assistant principal, Durrell…read moreBurns is such an immature liar. I met with him today for clarification on HIS lies. I emailed this man for three days before he even bothered to respond. He danced around every question I asked him. He had the audacity to tell me he wasn't on trial and told me to ask my kid. Unbelievable.. When you're being truthful, you don't have to recap your story using a written text from your phone. Liars are always mad when you call them out. He was acting like an angry 13 year kid. He tried to antagonize me, I fired back with my words, then he told security "get her out!!)He was still running his mouth as I was leaving. Trying to communicate with him was by far the most difficult part of my day. I can only imagine what the kids go through. This is who the students have to look up to, I think not. The kids aren't safe with him there. His entire demeanor made me feel as though he wanted to hit me. At that point, I was already done. He should go back to teaching, and gain more experience and then try this assistant principal thing again. Right now, his maturity level is beneath most of the kids there. I didn't get anything I went in for today. I'm disgusted that I even thought he was capable of having a candid, adult conversation. The more I think about it, he seemed as though he wanted to impress his coworkers by attempting to stand firm with me, as I exposed his lying self. From the things he said, he seems awfully jealous of the teenage boys, mentioning who they talk to and who they're close with. It's none of his business. He has bigger fish to fry, like learning to communicate with parents without acting like a child. I will NEVER make the mistake of acknowledging him again. Beware of him. Let me not forget the woman at the front desk. She ignored me and cackled with everyone in the office until, I asked if she was going to continue to ignore me or help me. She then called Durrell to the front office, to let him know I was there.

I'm so impressed by the farming they are doing and hands-on learning opportunities they are giving to children in the area. The AgWorks facility is handicap accessible and they sell their food to local restaurants and businesses, so children get exposure to soilless farming AND business. Not only do the farming techniques for aquaphonics and hydroponics sustain the "crops", the solar panels on the building provide enough energy to power the lab. This place was a completely hidden gem.

"As I strolled into the High School in the fall of my freshman year, I stopped and had one…read moreresonating thought: 'Man, this place smells terrible!'" -Every person who has ever given a speech at a CYHS graduation As I attended this institution for four grueling years, it would be too great a task to write this review in the same fashion as my others, therefore I will break it up into four categories. Enjoy. Administration: The Administration at Central was decent. Although they seemed to shove a new initiative down our throats every other week, they did their jobs effectively. From time to time incompetency was shown, no doubt. Whether it be "Hallway Freezes" which lasted all of two days or deciding to hold graduation inside on a perfectly rainless night, you sometimes wondered if a six year was really pulling the strings. However, overall a satisfactory job was performed. 3/5 Teachers: It's hard to rate all teachers under one sweeping review, but I'm gonna do it. A handful of teachers guided me through tough times, challenged me to want more from myself, and taught me to question the very fabric of the universe. Others were petty schmucks, no more mature than the students they're suppose to be "facilitating" knowledge to, who shouldn't be allowed within 100 feet of any children. An exemplary display of many teachers true nature happened when I was in 10th grade. Rolling up on the bus and into the U there were nearly 50 teachers standing out in "revolt." Here they stood in some sort of protest against the school board. I asked several of the participating teachers what they were doing there and they all spouted off some BS about showing their unity as teachers. What a gloriously hypocritical thing to do. Openly show your dissatisfaction for the administration to hundreds of students, yet still expect the students to adhere to the rules set by the administrators. 2.75/5 Library: Books... Technology. Long ago, the two nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Tech Office attacked. The hostile takeover of the library by the Tech Office was a tragedy I will not soon forget. Led by the mighty BOOM BOOM himself, the Tech Office took no prisoners in its conquest. They forced the kind old librarian into retirement and slapped a hideous new name on the former great educational center: The HUB. It gives me chills just typing it. They expected everyone to just accept the new changes and that everything would be fine. But I won't forget. I won't forgive. R.I.P. Library 2008-2015 2/5 Cafeteria/Lunch: The cafeteria was just okay. At rush hour it was like a mosh pit minus the music and everything else that makes a mosh pit cool. The food itself was edible as long as you didn't gaze upon it for too long. Usually there were two to three decent meals a week. Every other day was a chicken patty day. The ever reliable chicken patty. Between cursing the name "Michelle Obama" and choking down whatever slop was on my tray, I had an enjoyable time in the cafeteria. 3/5 The final story I'd like to share is how my incarceration at CYHS ended. After wiping my cap into the air and waddling to the exit, I stopped and locked eyes with Dr. Czarnecki. We exchanged the following words. Dr. C: "Have a happy life, it's all you can really ask for." Me, unfolding and sliding sunglasses on: "You got it." Dr. C, also with sunglasses on: "You got it."
