History

Established in 1972.

In 1972 opende Marie Lourdon, in een pittoresk pandje op de Bredabaan 295 in Brasschaat, een speciaalzaak voor kazen en delicatessen. Er werd gezocht naar uitsluitend artisanale specialiteiten. In 1990 werd de zaak overgenomen door de dochter, Jacqueline Warmenbol, die de nichemarkt van artisanele specialteiten verder uitbouwde. Vakkennis, ervaring en strenge selectie van producten, service en klantvriendelijkheid liggen aan de basis van het 43-jarig bestaan en het trouw cliënteel. In 2012 nam Anja Faes de fakkel van Jacqueline over. Ook zij tracht met dezelfde gedrevenheid, klantvriendelijkheid en vakkennis deze speciaalzaak verder te laten groeien.

I think this is supposed to be the first modern food hall in Antwerp…read more I stopped by on a lark and it was pretty empty (sometime between lunch and dinner time). But at least it was air conditioned, and there were free bathrooms near the back. And they served liquor and beer at the bar in the center. Not bad beer selection either, though a bit pricey. In terms of food, there were multiple stands. You could get oysters, duck buns, charcuterie, desserts, and more. They have live music three nights a week, and there's a tons of outdoor seating.

Mercado is the Hipster Mecha of the season and not really a market. It is basically foodtruck food…read morein a fancy market layout. Like a modern and "gourmet" mall food court. Overpriced, crowded and I believe it will get old soon. On the bright side, I had a really good pulled pork sandwich, but nowhere to eat it sitting down. There was no conception of personal space and hungry people tend to be a bit aggressive, and I get it, standing in line for a long time in an extremely crowded place just to buy 2 small quesadillas for 6 euros which you will eat before finding a seat does not sound like a pleasant experience. Definitely not for me, but this place will be packed every weekend for the next couple months because that's how hotspots work somehow.
