I was part of the Fall 2019 5-week workshop. During the first session of our workshop, Lynne asked us to describe our relationship with writing. I compared writing to an old friend who I've been meaning to catch up with for a while now. After spending 5 weeks with Lynne and the rest of the group, I am really happy to say that writing is now my friend who I am so happy to have reconnected with! Lynne created a welcoming, safe space for us all to practice our writing (using prompts), share with the group, and give / get feedback. The first time I shared, I was really nervous. But Lynne is so supportive that my nerves faded pretty quickly. She's kind, funny, and gives you thoughtful, actionable feedback that you can take with you and practice / apply in following sessions. I learned a lot from not only the feedback she and the rest of the group gave me directly, but from the feedback others received as well. I was so impressed by the other writers in the group and looked forward to hearing their different style week after week. On top of all this, the writing space is really cozy and the tea and snacks are such a nice touch. Love the truffle potato chips! I will definitely sign up for another workshop and would recommend Lost Lit to anyone who wants to reconnect with writing but is a little nervous to put yourself out there. This writing workshop was the best gift I've ever given myself... and I've given myself a lot of really nice gifts! Lynn takes every level of writer gently into a space where they can explore their own voice, minus the harsh judgment or criticism and miraculous art emerges. My favorite part was hearing the work of my fellow participants! Humans have such beautiful stories to tell and Lynn is very skilled in coaxing these gems out of us. I was amazed at what I was able to produce in the five short sessions. I've fallen back in love writing! If I could afford it, I'd take her class every night of the week! She's such a joy! I attended an 8 week workshop session with Lost Lit. I had been stuck in a rut, needing some inspiration to stop Thinking About Writing and actually put pen to paper. The workshop leader, Lynne, was professional but kind. The workshop participants were talented and receptive. This workshop was a spark to me. Something about the warmth of the workshop, the writing together, the spirit led me to make drastic changes in seeing myself as a writer. The confidence I gained in 8 weeks led me to have greater discipline as a writer, yet gain new ways of jump starting what was in my head to the pen in my hand. Life changing? Yes. I attended Lynne's 5-week Works-In-Progress workshop in March of 2015. We met for 2 hours on Tuesday nights, and those 2-hour Tuesdays quickly became the highlight of my week. What to expect: 1. A supportive, relaxing, safe environment 2. Hot tea and little nibbles 3. Getting to know your fellow workshoppers on many levels through their invaluable feedback and unique experiences as writers 4. A passion by workshop leader Lynne to move your work forward I walked into that workshop with 5 paltry double-spaced pages of a short story (more like a skeleton of one). I was ready to abandon the whole project. I left with 13 pages, 2 rounds of really solid, constructive feedback from all 4 of my "editors", and an invitation to read at one of Lynne's upcoming events. I am so excited to finish my story now. I had such an amazing experience at Lost Lit. I took the fall 2015 workshop and met once a week for 2 hours. Even though it was my first writing workshop, Lynne and the group helped me feel completely at ease when reading my work. The prompts were generally fun and challenging and got my wheels turning. Sometimes the sessions ran over, but only because we were giving each other so much feedback -- and that's a great thing! Lynne gives astute, insightful, and always positive feedback that helps you realize your own strengths as a writer. This is the place to build up confidence about your writing and get inspired by other writers. The small, intimate environment (the back of Grumpy Bert, the cool store she runs with her husband) helped me feel comfortable sharing, and by the end of the workshop I felt close to the group. Even though I've since left Brooklyn and NYC, I have such fond memories of my time at Lost Lit and would recommend it to anyone looking to jumpstart his or her writing again. read more

I recently wrapped up a beginners' workshop at Lost Lit that I received as a gift, and could not be more pleased with the experience. I'm not exactly a beginner, but someone who has less time to write than he'd like, and this course was exactly what I needed to get myself back on the wagon. The format was supportive and friendly, and Lynne's prompts genuinely engaging and thought-provoking. Lynne conducted each workshop in a dignified, respectful manner that I feared would be absent from the workshop set-up, and I feel that I gained valuable insights into what makes writing - both mine and others' - tick. Lynne really goes above and beyond to create a warm, comfortable environment where you feel comfortable to share your work and delve into deep, important writing. She keeps classes small -- about 10 people -- and provides tea, cocoa, and homemade snacks, which made class feel like a safe haven after work, where I could let everything else go and just be creative. I attended the Works-in-Progress class for five weeks, and have participated in one of the Lost Lit Readings. I adore working with Lynne, who was a fantastic leader, facilitator, and organizer. The workshop was an excellent next step for anyone who has been working on a longer fiction/non-fiction and wants constructive feedback, or anyone who has been writing for a while looking for a workshop environment. The class follows the Amherst Writers method, which means I was able to learn what worked about my writing, but also what might need revisiting and improving, which I enjoyed. Everyone took it seriously and was so respectful for my work, and for that I am so grateful. Lynne and my fellow writers/editors (who all brought very different and unique kinds of work) in the class gave nothing but thoughtful, stimulating feedback to my work, and helped what I thought would be a seven-page essay turn into a much longer, possible memoir. I'm so glad I signed up, and highly recommend it for any writer looking for a workshop. Not to mention the Grumpy Bert's is an excellent, cozy workshop space, and Lynne took extra care every which to provide us with little snacks and tea, as well as some puppy love when her dog Remy would come by and join us! Also: Lost Lit's readings have also been a blast to participate in, and all of my friends enjoyed attending them as well. read more

I signed up for the Lost Lit writing class after passing by Grumpy Bert's a few times and seeing the sign about the class. I was interested, but nervous because I am a total beginner when it comes to creative writing. I emailed the instructor, Lynne, about what to expect. She leads the class with a writing prompt and then provides students with 10-15 minutes to write. Then students are given the option of reading their piece aloud and other students can give feedback. Lynne uses the Amherst Writers Method - one of the key principles is for readers and listeners of your writing to only provide feedback on things they noticed or positive feedback. No real negative feedback. This was important for me because you read your piece immediately after having written it - you haven't had a chance to refine it at all. Overall, I had a great experience. I was initially terrified of sharing my work and I hate public speaking, but I became more comfortable with both through the 8 week course. Sometimes the flow of my writing was so easy and comfortable, other times I really struggled. The other writers in my class were a talented group but also very welcoming and warm. I would always come home so energized and excited that I would share my piece with my partner. Lastly, Lynne always provides delicious snacks and tea for the class. I would eat my dinner at home before heading over there and started to look forward to the snacks as my dessert. I highly recommend this class!! I recently attended the Lost Lit Adoption Writing Workshop, and absolutely loved it. Lynne is a very talented writer and teacher, and was able to take us to some challenging places in our writing. She created a warm, supportive space in which to share our work, and I found myself able to write and speak about difficult subjects with other writers who are also adoptees, adoptive parents, or birth parents. I took Lost Lit's weekly writing workshop based on the Amherst Writers & Artists workshop method. I couldn't have asked for a better foray back into the writing space. I took the course January through March of 2014. I had decided to pick writing back up late in 2013. Whenever I sat down to write, it felt like going into an attic only to find it full of cobwebs and dusty shelves. I had a hard time feeling like I could access the right pockets of mind. After a few weeks at Lost Lit, I found myself tapping into a creative mindset much more quickly. By the end of the workshop, I produced a short story that I aim to polish. Cobwebs gone. There is no homework or writing instruction--it is just pure, unadulterated writing, right then and there, followed by positive feedback. I found Lost Lit back in 2013 (I think?!) when I was working full time as a social worker and needed to find a writing community. Here I am years later, and Lost Lit is my writing home. Lynne Connor (and her husband Albert, owner of Grumpy Bert, where Lost Lit takes place) is warm, encouraging and REAL. There's no fluffy, artsy hooplah (though if you really want that, just ask, Lynne's open!) It's just a group of people who want to write, think, talk and share together. Lynne is a great leader, and she'll meet you and the group where you're at. AWA's method is centered on treating everything written as fiction (even if it isn't,) and making sure all feedback is positive. If you've never workshopped before and are nervous, or are feeling shellshocked from an in-depth critique workshop, this is for you! Lost Lit's Get Lit workshop was just what I needed to feel invigorated with my writing again, and Lynne has guided and supported me through submissions to lit journals, applications to fellowships and ultimately my creative writing MFA (where I am now!) Lost Lit also presents many events through out the year where participants and alums can perform their work. I have done several performances with them that has only enriched and strengthened my practice. I can't imagine my life without Lost Lit. I found Lost Lit to be a great way to escape a creative writing block I found myself in. The act of responding to prompts, sharing, and celebrating raw and unfinished writing was a great way to accomplish this. The workshops are small and attended by a supportive group of locals. I've attended two workshops at LostLit. It's been such a rewarding experience. I've felt encouraged to find my own voice and return to writing after a long absence, and I've also been incredibly inspired by the voices and writing of others in the LostLit writing community. I was a bit nervous going into the workshop the first time because I am by no means an expert writer or even what I would call the "creative type." I highly recommend Lost Lit for writers (by writer I mean anybody who wants to write) who want to experiment with their writing styles prior to doing a traditional MFA type workshop. This is a wonderful way to share in a group and get your feet wet by this process. Lynne provides a nice environment and ensures that everybody is comfortable. What is impressive is the critiques. Everybody picks up something different to note and compliment the writer. To emphasis, your writing is ONLY going to get complimented on what is strong. I left each session feeling uplifted and more confident in my writing abilities. I did the workshop twice and am one of what Lynne calls a "veteran." Overall, Lynne is a very nice and insightful moderator and so are the people who flock to Lost Lit! read more

I signed up not knowing what to expect other than a writing workshop in a cool environment that fit my sensibilities (I'm a big Mark Ryden fan and the atmosphere at Bert's in general). Not only was Lynne herself a wonderful teacher and leader but everyone in the class was so open and receptive to the work. I love Lost Lit! I've participated in these writing workshops for about a year and now the living room at the back of Grumpy Bert's feels like home. Lynne Connor, who runs Lost Lit, is really smart and knowledgeable about the craft of writing. She uses the Amherst Writers Method where she presents a prompt and then everyone writes for ten minutes. Afterwards, participants can share their writing and receive positive feedback on what worked. When I started Lost Lit, I hadn't written much in a long time. Now I've written short pieces that I've expanded into longer stories. I've also relished being a part of an interesting, diverse and supportive group of writers. A great environment in which to explore your craft--literally, the studio is writing prompt heaven, whether they're the ones Lynne provides, or the inspiration you get when looking around at the artwork and things on the shelves. Lynne is an excellent facilitator, selecting great prompts, encouraging writers, pointing out what works, and reacquainting (or acquainting) participants with their writing selves. Lynn ensures that it's easy to share work and the feedback is always constructive and supportive--the living room-like set up, complete with snacks and great lighting all combine to make this a really positive experience. Agree with the other comments! I took a fall Lost Lit workshop with Lynn, after not writing for about 15 years. She was a great facilitator, and I really enjoyed the group. I've taken workshops based on the Amherst Writers method before - some things I've found. helpful, like the "no negative comments" policy. Some things I didn't find as helpful - for example generally, this method doesn't focus on technique. However, Lynne was very helpful in pointing out the "how" of what made pieces work. One of the great things about this method is listening to the amazing things people come up with. read more
