This set of sculptures right on the pier by the Bay of Santander is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city. But who are the Raqueros????
At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the term was used to refer to those children, usually poor young people, even orphans, who prowled the docks of the Bay of Santander jumping into the Cantabrian Sea to recover a few coins that were thrown by fishermen, crew members, passerbys or locals.
The monument to the Raqueros was created in 2007 to tell one of the infinite chapters in the history of Santander.
It is one of the most popular monuments in Santander and it is not necessary to visit it on purpose, since you will pass by there thanks to its privileged location in the middle of the promenade, overlooking the bay between the Embarcadero Palace and the Nautical Club of Santander. read more
