We had such a great experience at Los Molcajetes! Everything was absolutely delicious. I ordered the molcajete and it was packed with flavor...perfectly cooked and so satisfying. My husband had the camarones al mojo de ajo and they were just as amazing. Also their green salsa was soooo good! This place took over the old Got Plate Location. Was on the way home from SIPS and decided to pick up food to go. Plenty of seating available, went at about 11am and was greeted by friendly staff. Unfortunately that's probably the highlight of this place. Ordered enchilada plate with pastor and refried beans, wife got asada tacos. Enchiladas were okay and beans were meh. Wife's asada tacos were crazy dry and not very flavorful. Probably won't be back here to get food. If you're craving some Mexican food, I'd probably head to El Tesoro and for tacos, La Piñata still can't be beat in the area. read more

Let me start by saying that I ordered the chile relleno and it was delicious. The other person with me ordered a grilled-chicken burrito and he said it had very little chicken and it was mostly stale rice and some refried beans. Clearly it appeared that they wanted the burrito to look bigger by filling it with a bunch of stale rice and very little meat. And he said it was barely warm. We ate inside, and the table was dirty and sticky feeling and there were many flies that had to be dealt with. The menus had food residue on them as well. The server was very nice but very busy talking with workers who were there to repair their internet and other things so he was distracted and we had to ask for refills but he was quick to respond once we got his attention. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, but my tamale and enchilada plate was delicious. Beans and rice were yummy too. My son devoured the fried fish. I have no complaints about our food. I'd suggest to have more than one server. Ours was pretty busy and could've used some help with the rush of customers coming for dinner. I recognize that this is a new business and they are working out the flow to managing large crowds. We visited today with most of the patio filled and the servers were just too overwhelmed to pay attention to our needs. We spent over 15 mins waiting for a menu, then another 15 waiting for someone to get our order. Our appetizer arrived after our main dishes. Our main dishes were served without silverware and we had to wait for that as well. The food was not spectacular, we ordered some tostadas. The beef was hard and cut up into small pieces and the tostadas were slapped together without care and looked very unappetizing. We used to frequent the one in Vallejo when we lived there, so we were not mad when we saw one was going in downtown....I asked twice in advance if they had breakfast burritos. Once when I was walking by and I called again to inquire right before going down there. Both times I was confidently told YES they have breakfast burritos. Got there and they don't serve breakfast burritos....cool bro. We should have left right then but the rest of my party wanted to give it a shot. It took an hour for food to arrive, some of the orders were wrong (wrong type of beans, for example), and for two people the food took 10-15 mins behind everyone else's, and getting the appropriate silverware and water refills in the meantime was slow. Food was mediocre at best. Dry/flavorless rice, dry carne asada, small portions of meat, and I had a taco salad that was very small (hardly any lettuce in there?!? Where is the salad in my salad? The amount of meat (1/4 cup of small diced carnitas?!!) and beans and cheese and EVERYTHING in my SUPER Nachos was VERY minimal, I had to cook beans and meat when I got it home to doctor it up. How ridiculous! Have been here twice now and very disappointing. Flies filled the inside dining area and all the tables were sticky as were the floors. (Both times) Food itself not really anything to write home about. Flavor lacked. Grilled chicken burrito should be actually grilled. It was supposed to come with cheese however didn't. Have to say the Portions themselves were of a good size. That was a plus. Next visit was the same with the ambiance, flies, sticky tables and floors. Ordered something different this time. Grilled chicken dinner plate. Chicken more on the boiled side than grilled. Refried beans extremely watery this time. There were several wait staff hanging around and eating food in the dining room near the cash register and on this second occasion our server put our order in and then sat and also started eating. Our food sat there waiting to be brought to the table. Had to flag someone down to bring us more water and they seemed very put out. They do provide chips and salsa for the table however a very small portion and when asked for more when we ran out since the food took so long to get to us, they appeared not to be to happy about it because we had to interrupt their dinner. They allowed a young person each time we were there to go behind the counter and put their face on the stainless steel countertop where the Food comes out of the kitchen. We waited to visit the restaurant to give them several weeks to get established before trying it however, I don't believe we will be back. On a positive note, they do have a very nice eating area outside with a sun tarp over the area to provide shade for their patrons. There are several other Mexican restaurants throughout the town that the service is a lot better, their cleaner and the food actually arrives hot. The food was good. Meat was flavorful and you get a good quantity. However, Literally none of the items we ordered were made correctly. I was given the wrong meat for all 4 items ordered, the burrito was not made "mojado" was missing the beans and was made with steak rather than carnitas as ordered. The 2 of the 3 tacos ordered were correct. The chicken enchiladas were in fact steak and the carnitas nachos were also steak. ... I think they really like their steak. It was good, but I was really looking forward to the actual items I ordered. This probably wouldn't have been as much of a bummer if we ate there, but I ordered the food to go and didn't notice until I was home. I might go back... I ordered Machaca which was the strangest I've ever had, it's supposed to be based on shredded beef and instead I got these odd chunks of meat. Also the onions and chilis seemed lacking, making it somewhat tasteless, even with the addition of salsa. Rice and beans were okay but nothing outstanding. We also got chile verde, which looked like they used spam for the meat (which I assume they didn't but it sure looked and tasted like it). We had leftovers which we took to be polite but didn't bother eating later. Just ate here for the first time, AMAZING!!! Absolutely authentic Mexican food fresh and hot, perfect balance of flavors, the chilaquiles was top! The chicken tacos were just like PV street tacos, the huevos rancheros was awesome too! super stoked to find out how good the micheladas are when they get their license (come on California do better). Firstly, the tortilla chips were stale. The taco salad was served in a strange flour tortilla bowl that was serrated and not crunchy but oil saturated. There was ample meat, the guacamole was watery. The salsa was tomato plus peppers. The service was good and atmospheres ok but confined. They do have a large patio but it was raining. We had such high hopes! The first visit flop was really our fault...it was their opening day. We waited forever for our to-go order and when we got home it was someone else's. Believing in second chances, our second visit included very slow service, requested water that never arrived, and we had to get part of it to go because our server forgot. My husband ordered enchiladas and tacos, that he said were average. I ordered a taco salad and was very surprised that the bottom of the bowl was filled with white rice!?! WTH? Finally, the flautas that we ended up getting to-go were not flautas and covered with cheese that made them soggy. I guess the final straw was when we got the check and not only were we charged for an item we didn't order, my husband's Sprite cost $5.19! Is it just me or is that crazy??? Finally a good Mexican restaurant in Benicia! We ordered two of the combinations, and they were very good. We even had a substitution on one of the orders and they got it right. The guacamole was ok--too creamy for my taste, but not bad. Service was a little wobbly, but it's a new location, so we assume it'll smooth out over time. A friend and I, drawn by our shared love of juevos rancheros, decided to give them a try. We are in agreement that their juevos are the best that we have eaten in Benicia. The sauce seemed to be freshly made; it contained visible pieces of onion, tomato and bell pepper, unlike the common practice of using (what seems like) enchilada sauce. The tortillias that were served were quite fresh and tasty. Here's the problem: Two orders of juevos, two coffees totaled $60. With tip, the breakfast for 2 cost $70. The coffee, I guess a version of "Cafe de Olla", contained a hint of cinamon, perhaps other spices and was charged as if we had ordered a cocktail. I was unable to find any mention of coffee on the Molcajete online menu; we had merely asked for coffee. I would have appreciated being told that we were getting a premium drink. Good juevos or not, we left feeling a little tricked and definitely charged more that we expected. I'll return to making my own breakfasts before paying this price again. read more
