It's a huge market: a covered area, outside areas, ... it's hard to know where the market starts and end (it blends into the area of Etla around it)! You can find everything here: fresh Oaxacan cheese, meat, vegetables, fruit, insects, spices, ingredients for making mole (chiles for days), ... clay pots for making hot chocolate, clothes, toys ... Seriously, this market is massive. You could spend hours here. We tried some cheese, ate some tamales, tried some chapulines, bought some fruits, and just explored...! Definitely worth exploring if you're interested in Oaxacan cuisine or enjoy markets!

A friend and I took the short drive to revisit This market is large if you count all the vendors along the adjoining side street. That said the range of food, ie fresh meats and poultry, fresh caught fish, an excellent juice bar, fresh vegetables and more. The market is plentiful and the people are friendly. Tip: the food stalls on the inside are often closed on the weekends. But outside the main building there's still very delicious food!

Once we got off, we were right at the start of the awesomeness. This market is EXTENSIVE. We spent about three hours there eating, walking, and browsing and still felt as if we could have used more. There is an impressive array of fruit stands, chicken and barbacoa, clothing stalls, and everything in between. In addition, we were able to walk into this awesome hall of meat. It was very much like the 20 de Noviembre market in the city, but much larger. We went on a Sunday, which was recommended, as I've heard it is the busiest, but I've heard it's open every day. Also, to note, there are a ton of stray dogs walking around. They are not aggressive, but might follow you if you have a bag of meat!

It's especially known for its Smoke Alley where you walk through a smoke-filled hallway of vendors cooking meat on grills. Throughout this market you'll find a lot of workers at the different stalls trying to get you to eat at their stall. It can be overwhelming when you might just want to look around. It's really just a chaotic time and a part of you just wants to avoid the people glaring and yelling at you, especially if you're a tourist. It's crowded and hectic but it's part of the unique experience. If you're visiting Oaxaca you will most likely visit this market and the adjacent Mercado Benito Juarez. I'd go in the morning to avoid the crowds to really enjoy your time, but the aroma of the meat might entice you to sit down for a meal.

Every time I´m around I take a look at the market, I see what´s available and think of millions of ways to combine & prepare all the ingredients I see. I don´t visit as often as before since I´ve heard it´s not very safe anymore, so instead of saving some money I look for safe places to buy my food and feel comfortable at the same time.

The market extends outside making it easier to shop around for the best prices. It's an ideal place to try the various bread, cheese, fruit waters/ homemade ice cream. Most place that sell fresh meat also have a grill where you can grill your own meat and eat there. Even if you don't eat there, just walking around the Mercado is an awesome experience.
