I really love kolaches, so unfortunately this place was a bit of a disappointment for me. I tried a kolache with sauerkraut and sausage, and it honestly felt like there was no sauerkraut in it at all, no flavor, no texture. The sausage was also very underwhelming, tasting like a very cheap one, something you'd buy in bulk at Costco. I also tried another kolache with egg, and that one was extremely dry. That said, the place itself is clean, the service is good, and the staff are polite and friendly. Unfortunately, the kolaches themselves were not great, which was disappointing given that this is what the place specializes in. read more

I used to be a regular here. I would pick up kolaches for work once a week. But I drifted away during the pandemic. I went back today and I found a 10 inch black hair in my food, utterly disgusting. They offered to replace it, but I've eaten hundreds of kolaches from this place and never found a hair so it's a little hard to trust them once you find one. Seems like it's under new management. The long haired guy at the counter certainly wasn't wearing any kind of hairnet. Also two kolaches now cost $8. That's also absurd. Guess they are charging more for the hairs. read more

Ol' Rooster is a self confessed kolache addict; like you might actually see me on one of those intervention shows one day. They might say "James, you have a problem when you drive an hour one way out to 38th and Lamar just for a kolache" Well my friends ditch the camera crew and the piles of Kleenex because Lone Star has came to my hood! But, its not that simple at least for me. There is a Lone Star closer to the ranch in Westlake; somehow they don't make the grade on my poison of choice the ranchero. I've begged them on multiple occasions to add a bit more sauce to the mix to make it identical to the Lamar store; didn't do it. Add in some complaining on Yelp, emails to the owners, and still no dice. Instead I just kept driving North on Mopac. Today was the test, would it be as good as its sister store? YES YES YES! I had to have two just to make sure, you know for quality purposes. Little Rooster ended up with two apple and cream cheese and downed almost both. Our first visit totally rocked and I didn't spend $22 in gas to get my fix. Today South Austin is a step closer to a perfection thanks to this new LSK location. The kolaches are good but it is nearly impossible to place an order ahead of time. They do not check the phone where you can "text" orders, nor do they answer phone calls despite multiple attempts. I have to say this place is the worst, not because the quality of food...but the quality of people they hire. The opening hours are 0530. It is a true gamble is they will be open at 0530, or not. If they are open, chance of them having what you want are slim to none. In the service industry, you usually want to be fully prepared for your day and especially opening time. Their dough is the authentic light, yeasty, slightly sweet kolache dough. Fruit fillings are quality and what you'd expect. First time to Lonestar, bought Kolaches to go for breakfast this morning, they were good, not Czech stop good, but still good, and close by! The assortment was wide, more than the other local places, lots of sweet options here. I got sausage cheese jalapeno and ham and cheese, both really good. These Kolaches are the only thing I miss about living on Brodie lane. I used to come here at least once a week for the egg and cheese kolache or the bean and cheese. It's what I think is different between each of them. Their bread is soft and 'fluffy'? I like it The sausage is ok. Not a lot, but not MIA either. I tried the regular, the cheese, and the cheese jalapeño. The latter two are my preference. The jalapeño wasn't too spicy, if really at all. But can taste it enough to make a choice worth getting. Let me start by saying I don't think the kolache is the pinnacle of the culinary world and as a result, I am simply looking for a tasty breakfast treat when I seek them out. The atmosphere is fairly sterile (a lot cleaner than close by kolache shops) and the staff was... meh.. ok. I do like that they have a full array of both savory and sweet kolaches. I ordered a cheese & polish sausage and a jalapeno, sausage and cheese kolache. The polish sausage kolache was pretty good. The sausage had a nice snap to the casing and each bite left me facing the sheen of fat spilling out of the sausage. The thing that struck me immediately is that this is the first place that used actual cheddar cheese!!! The second is that the kolache contained actual pickled jalapenos!!! I was a little disappointment by the ratio of sausage to bread, mostly because it was slightly awkward to eat. I basically folded the bread in half to tuck soundly around the sausage. The sausage was basically a hot dog, but between real cheese and jalapeno, it had a decent flavor. The funny thing is that when I went back to the polish kolache, I found I enjoyed the ratio of the cheese, sausage, jalapeno kolache more than the polish. While I consider myself lucky to have such easy access to kolaches in Austin, the best kolache bakeries (in my humble opinion) happen to be en route to Houston (Hruska's in Ellinger) and the crème de la crème, king of all kolache crafters - Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery (in the small town of West en route to Dallas). Don't get me wrong, the kolaches hailing from Lone Star are better than no kolaches at all, but I'm still left with an aching hole in my kolache-lovin' heart after the last crumb is gone. So this is imperative - you MUST arrive by 10am or most selections will be gone. No surprise, as kolaches are a commodity even in Austin where we're blessed with several outposts of this local chain. Because they were out of my go-to choice, the sausage, cheese and jalapeno, I opted for the sausage and cheese and also a strawberry so I could gauge a sweet one. I firmly believe that the dough is what puts the great in kolaches. Lone Star seems to use a sweeter dough then other bakeries I've been to and the ensuing pocket of pleasure wasn't as light and airy as others... may be a result of overworking the dough. Though I still enjoyed these yeasty treasures, the overly sweet and somewhat hard roll makes these basic and not favorites. Some people dig donuts but everyone I happen to know is a salt lover so they will prefer a kolache anyday over something sweet. So since that is my situation, we ended up here this weekend. I'm an early morning person, and they have very early hours which is a plus (Opening at 5:30am). The prices are also more than fair.
