I had been getting shooting pain through my back as my pregnancy had progressed and was looking for somewhere to get a massage. The room was cozy with relaxing essential oils diffusing. There was a comfortable pregnancy pillow set up for me to be very comfortable and on my side since laying on my belly isn't really an option at 6 months pregnant. I got a 90 minute massage and was so relaxed I fell asleep towards the end. The massage was just what I needed and I felt a major difference the next through my back. I have had some health issues recently and the owner, Erica has been so helpful and supportive. She said, "come to class and do what you can. She is such an amazing teacher with deep knowledge of the ancient practice and modern knowledge using balls to open tight muscles and get into fascia. Practicing with her is always heart opening and satisfying. I love all the teachers at shala. My mother spoke so glowingly about how great she felt after her session that I was inspired to try it myself. Serena is very kind, and most importantly, incredibly skilled. If you want a turn-me-into-a-puddle type of massage, she'll do it, and do an amazing job. But her real skill is structural integration, where she actually gets in between the fibers of your muscles and attachment points (as in, all 4 heads of your quadriceps muscle) and creates separation so that you feel looser over all, for longer than you would after just a traditional massage. She really wants to help address the root cause of the discomfort, not just trying to get to the discomfort itself. It sounds weird, but she gets into where it hurts, pulls on it, and then it feels better. She's all around an amazing practitioner. I love going because I always feel so much better when I'm finished. I cannot recommend her highly enough. I'd drive 2 hours to see her, but thankfully, she's very conveniently located close to my house.
