When traveling, you often risk a bad meal in the hopes of finding a good one. And every once in a…read morewhile, you find not a good meal, but an exceptional experience. Tonight was that night, and this was the place. Reservations are absolutely required unless you, like we, are lucky enough to be one of the first people walking in when they first open. There are but three tables, each deuces, reserved for walk-ins. And bring cash, because they do not have a credit card option. You have the requirements, now the part you've waited for. The meal. I could begin with only the food, but it would serve to be unfair. The owners, a husband and wife, don't just make the food and serve it. They coddle it. Alvero, the husband, greeted us with a vibrance only an owner possesses. He cheerfully greeted us and sat us. He quickly ascertained our intentions and accomodated our desires. He brought the menus and, in extraordinary detail and with a depth of knowledge rately found in the restaurant business. It is a passion, not just a job. And it is clearly not only his passion, because when you taste the food, well, you'll understand. The passion is a family affair. We began the evening with a glass of young wine, which is green, which my partner enjoyed tremendously. Our food commenced with three types of bread (pumpkin, carrot, and and I think chestnut) and a cheese and sausage board. While we tried to only sample the bread, we couldn't stop eating it, along with the homemade jams. The board was good, well balanced, and the flavors of the meats and cheeses complimented each other well. Each came with a remarkable description of the origin, components, and anticipated flavors, all quite accurate. Our main course was based on the chef's grandmothers' recipe. Pork specially prepared and served on crustini, with salad, all prepared with love to perfection. We finished with two desserts, which we intended to sample. Instead, we finished both. They were that good! One was the homemade chocolate cake with a fudge sauce, the other an amazing pastry filled with homemade jam, I think. All I know is it was remarkable! Sitting next to other tourists who were as excited to share the time made the experience even better. This is a highly recommended place to go when visiting Porto. But remember to make reservations if you want to be sure to get a seat.

When we came on Saturday, we waited in line for the place to open. We were seated immediately and the owner recognized us from earlier in the week. The traditional Portuguese tasting experience for breakfast including coffee with milk, scrambled eggs and two different toasts. I got it both times because it was amazing. While everyone in Porto has been kind, this owner must be the nicest person I have ever met. Very gracious, very apologetic for his English though we thought it was great, and he felt very grateful we came back a 2nd time. We joked we would see him tomorrow. He said they are closed tomorrow and will be for the next month. His wife is having surgery and will need time to recover. So glad we were able to stop in here and wishing the family luck over their next month closed. Adding this to my list should I find myself back here.

The menu was so tempting that we had a hard time making decisions. We started with the seia cheese and smoked ham croquettes. They did not disappoint! Ooey gooey goodness served with a lovely quince sauce that left us wanting to lick the plate. We settled on sharing the smoked sausage rice served in a spent seia cheese shell. Words cannot even begin to explain how incredibly decadent this dish was. It was more than enough to share, yet even as we were both full we could not stop indulging in it. It became richer as the steaming hot rice sausage and vegetable mixture continued to melt more of the sidewall cheese into the combination. We also could scoop melty cheese directly off the wall inside the bowl. I didn't think about it at the time, but if we had saved the crisps that are served with complementary olives on arrival we could have spread some of the cheese onto them as well. Alas- hopefully someone else can give that a try on our recommendation. Although too full for dessert, the cocoa cake was recommended as a house specialty. It is really more of a rich chocolate brownie or torte and is served with an incredible salted caramel sauce and topped with a dainty scoop of a fantastic goat cheese ice cream with flavoring along the lines of a creamy cheesecake. Such an absolutely lovely meal served by wonderful staff! Reuben and Maria made us feel very welcome and the staff at Rei Dos Queijos apparently speak every language there is. 4 mixed drinks, appetizer, shared entree and dessert €54. Not too shabby!

Would highly recommend for someone that doesn't stray to far from " typical " desserts. Everyone around us was sharing a cheese and/or meat plate as appetizer than an entree for two as well. We also had some white wine with that we had the cheapest by the glass but it went perfectly we everything we had. And really not expensive wine with a great taste. Would gladly go back !!
