I went towards the end of the evening near closing time, so the cookies and pastries had already been picked over quite a bit. Luckily, I was here to get a gingerbread man, and I picked out the cutest one ever (see photos)! I've rarely met a gingerbread I didn't like, and this version was a-okay. It wasn't as spicy as I'd like, but it had a nice chewy crunch to the cookie that made the texture quite satisfying. Of course, as is my method, I nibbled off his arms and legs first. I'm not such a fan of the icing, and Gilg's version I found quite bland. It was sweet, but not tasty. My cookie was individually wrapped in plastic which made it easy to reseal to enjoy later. I was able to take a few more nibbles on my train to Paris the next afternoon. And did I mention how stinking cute the cookie was? The little wide eyes and "o" face...just adorable. I could see these making excellent gifts to take home from Europe, if you could keep the cookies from breaking during transit. The other goods on offer looked tasty, but if the gingerbread man is any indication, this may be one of those "all looks, bland taste" type of bakeries. I wish I had tried something else, but my main reason to visit was merely "just okay."

Boulangerie Coté-Four was not traditional, but it was pretty and appealing to me. After haven chosen the cakes from the buffet (they look delicious ) we were asked to seat and we will be served. We were served with a smile (and even speaking English, how friendly and rare is that en France!). The cake were from a high level pastry chef, excellent quality and taste. As we returned to explore Riquewhir further a couple days later, we decided to treat ourselves to some of their products...we got an assorted 200 g bag for 6,50€. The bakery is a standard, small European bakery offering streudels, breads, pastries, eclairs, and the like. I have only had the small cookies that are sold by weight, brownie, and streudel, all of which were simply divine. It is hard for me to accurately assess pricing as I live in Zurich where everything is overpriced and don't taste nearly half as good as the offerings at this bakery. I typically get a kilo (what can I say?) of cookies and a brownie and spend around 15 euro. The women are friendly and understand enough English to allow you to pick out your own cookies that they pack up for you. The only drawback was during my last visit a very tacky U.K. family came in and started taking a ton of photos (with flash). Menus did not offer an English translation which may have impacted our ordered and experience. Food came out quickly. We ordered braised pork and the baked fish. Both were poorly presented. The fish was tasteless and watery and the pork was hard to look at. The waitress even laughed a bit when she placed it in front of my wife. It was big shank with a quarter inch of slimy hide wrapped around it. Once we pried the skin off with our butter knife (no steak knives given) what lay beneath was a dark pink flesh that seemed reminiscent to what the Donners must have had for dinner in the Sierra-Nevada - except what they ate was probably cooked better and less greasy. The rice and sauerkraut were the best parts of our meal. The wine was good too. The people around us chose flatbread type pizzas and they seemed to love them. I apologize to any other restaurant to which I have given a harsh review. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had. Next time I'll stick to the pastries
