Bangor public lending library is quite hard to find, as it's not situated in the main shopping area…read moreof the city of Bangor. Instead, it's down a side street near the police station. From the outside, the library looks small, and its dark wooden doors and lack of windows makes the building look neglected, or at worst, closed down. However, once entered, the library unfolds into a massiv area of well-organised books and other lending media (dvds, cds, audio books and so on). They have a selection at the front of recently returned books, as well as a section on new titles. The rest of the English-language books are separated into childrens and adults and organised alphabetically by author. There are a few PCs available and use of these is free of charge for members. There is also an extensive Welsh-language book selection, and a good range of dvds, audio books, and cds, although borrowing these incurs a small charge. The desk is staffed by friendly librarians and queues are rare.

This really comes into it's own when you go upstairs to the library itself (ignore the tacky gift shop on the first level) and a mini-gallery balcony (showcasing a changing programme of local artists) that has a aperture looking down on the mosaic (so not one for the vertigo sufferers). It's a friendly place with all the usual features (internet acsess for members, comfy chairs etc) and a good range of books.

On the occasions I've used the library for studying, I've found the staff to be very helpful and knowledgeable and they will order books in for you if you can't find what you're looking for.

This is not a problem though as there is the White Rose Precint oppoiste which always has spaces. (This is also Pay & Display) But then you can always combine a visit to the library with shopping at the precint.

It's set on 3 floor, the ground floor has the gallery and you go upstairs for library facilities. There is internet access there. There is a lift for disabled people to access the upper floor. Photocopying facilities are available too. Just inside the foyer there is a great array fo What;s On and Where to Go and places of local interest. Staff members of the library are very approachable and always willing to help out with any queries you may have

Whilst the lending of books is free to all, there is usually a small charge for borrowing non-book items such as audio books or dvds, and sometimes there's a charge for using the internet. Gwynedd universities don't charge for this. They frequently have offers on whereby in a certain month, a dvd can be borrowed for free with every 5 books borrowed. Dvds usually can be borrowed for a week, which means that in a month there's the option to borrow at least 4 dvds for free. Caernarfon library was renovated last year and looks very fresh and modern. The majority of fiction books are listed alphabeticall by author but for a few stands with books belonging to certain genres, e.g. science fiction, or horror, or crime. There is a wide selection of dvds and cds, as well as a whole rack of audio books and many large print books, and a whole section devoted to books that are written in the Welsh language. There are around 6 computers that can be hired for free for up to an hour. Joining the library in Caernarfon allows the user to borrow/return their books to any library in Gwynedd, which is handy if you do a lot of travelling. Last year they seemed to have every book I was looking for, including the Booker prize nominees, which is unusual. I'd definitely recommend joining/using the library in Caernarfon.
