Gap-filling exercises (from 'Use of English' for PCE; again, you will do this EVERY SINGLE DAY). 3. Tests for IELTS. But don't expect to get any feedback from the tests you do. For example, when you do a sample test for writing they give you your exam back only with an overall mark and a comment on it such as: clumsy; you should have written more; bad introduction; or that sort of remarks. They don't provide any tips, or help, or imput on how to get a high score at the exam. No communicative approach, no fun in the class. It was the most boring experience I had in my whole life learning a second language! And then they charge ridiculously high for what they do! So if you can avoid this school JUST DO IT. If you decide to go here you will be throwing your money to the bin!

There is a fair outlay (£210 a term for 15 weeks of 2.5 hour classes with discounts for returning students) but if anything it only encourages you to make the most of it. Everyone I've met in the school is passionate about teaching Spanish and the school works on a full immersion model where as much Spanish is possible is spoken. There are a couple of accompanying books you need to purchase but there is also lots of free material given out to cover listening, writing, reading and speaking. It's great to feel your achieving something every week, oh and the last class of each term usually has wine and that can only be a good thing!

I studied French for Higher but didn't like the fact that in French you have really long words but you only say half of them, it really confused me. If you are interest in French language and culture than this is one of the best places to go in Glasgow. They offer various classes, daily, weekly, intensive and even evening classes so you can fit it into your busy schedule.

I LOVE the Alliance Française!!…read more Last summer I was looking for yet another hobby to occupy my time with and after considering choirs, getting an allotment and drawing class I settled on learning French! I had done French up to Higher in school and some classes at university, but it had been a good few years since I'd done any proper studying. When I contacted the Alliance they were actually having an open week (something they do before first term year year) but unfortunately I wasn't able to attend within the times. They scheduled me to have an after work meeting with one of their advisers who would give me a quick (painless) speaking test to gauge my ability and then who would discuss with me the options available. After my test the advisor recommended that I start at Beginners 2 and talked me through the pricing plan. Courses sectioned into blocks of classes held over 8 weeks (called Terms), and you have the option to pay for either one, two or four terms at a time. By June I will have attended an entire "year" of classes (four terms) at the Alliance and will have graduated from Beginners 2 through to Beginners 3+. After the summer I'll have the chance to move up to intermediate classes. :) There is a real focus on speaking in the classes, which can sound intimidating but really helps you learn. You work through many different activities using your textbooks, the internet, listening cds and fun games! My teacher Gaelle, is fantastic! She has a great enthusiasm for teaching and always immaculately plans her classes. She is very patient with her pupils and encourages questions. All the other staff I've encountered at the Alliance have been equally as great. They have a great library full of resources you can borrow, and run a full compliment of culture events each month (including movies, book clubs, art shows, scientific talks and of course, wine tastings -but be careful some events are restricted to students in intermediate classes or above). They also run children's after school classes, university and high school revision classes, summer schools and conversational classes. Recently they began running online classes you can complete at home, using Skype to communicate to your personal tutor. I would really recommend the alliance to anyone who is interested in learning French, no matter at what level you're at. What ever night your first block of classes falls on (mines was Thursday nights) will be the night all your classes will be on as you progress through the programme! I've made some great friends at class since you move through the levels together and this creates a real sense of camaraderie. Bonne chance!!

The Goethe-Institute is a non-profit worldwide organisation which aims to educate on all aspects of German language and culture, there are 149 Goethe-Institutes in 91 different countries. Anyone interested in German, whether you are a beginner or advanced learner, this is the place for you. You can access a wide range of German literature from children's stories by Erich Kästner to more advanced texts. There are also different language courses available with recognised certificates. They often link up with the GFT to show German films old and new. Last year to commemorate 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall films were shown at the CCA and a special day was held at the Goethe-Institute showing news reels from 1989. This is the only Goethe-Institute in Scotland and it's a fantastic resource if you're interested in learning German. Einfach toll!

If you don't know your Bockwurst from your Snitchengruben then this is a great place to start as they do language courses from beginner to expert level. There's also plenty information available for those that want to visit the Reich themselves, which I would encourage anyone to do if they get the chance. Berlin is without doubt the most laid-back capital city in the developed world, and during my frequent visits there I grew to think of the city of Dresden as a sort of second home. The Neutstadt area in particular, had a bohemian vibrancy that shows up the West End of Glasgow for what it actually is. If you're a football fan, you'll love the country even more, as in my opinion it's the only place in Europe where the sport still exists in any recognisable form. An excellent resource for those interested in our Teutonic friends, and one I'd highly recommend.

Having left London a little broken hearted, forced to kiss goodbye the lovely sewing cafe at the end of my street... my eyes were dried the minute I realised Glasgow had the ultimate trump card: A SEWING PUB! The Hillhead Bookclub is such a fabulous venue and it's a great space for this friendly little group. Tucked in an upstairs nook, the atmospheric lighting makes for weekly needle-threading hilarity! If I could sew within a 5m radius of a cracking bar every night - I'd be a very well dressed alcoholic (with really great curtains). While I'll be honest to say I had originally expected more of a fabric/pattern sewing vibe - as opposed to more crafty-esque sewing projects - it's a stroke of genius to have bright, super fun projects that can be whipped up in great company over the space of a couple of hours. All patterns and supplies are provided (I know, right?!) - absolute beginners are welcomed, you just bring along a smile and willingness to get stuck in. Iona has created something truly remarkable and I still can't quite believe Say It Ain't Sew catch-ups are absolutely free of charge... spreading magic sewing fairy dust to any who may seek it.
