I was looking for an Evansville-area business to cater a lunch that my company was organizing…read morelocally, and it was my good fortune to stumble across Just Rennie's. I am so glad that I did! In addition to the fact that they were professional, friendly, and easy to work with, the sandwiches and potato salad were absolutely divine. (I grew up eating my mother's potato salad, and I always thought it was fantastic, but Rennie's was out-of-this-world good. Sorry, Mom.) Even though I live in Indianapolis, I will contact Just Rennie's for all future business lunches/dinners that I need to have catered in Evansville and southwestern Indiana. By the way, the chocolate chunk cookies were marvelous -- make sure you try them.

Other than the great friends I made, there are precious few things I miss about living in…read moreEvansville. Rennie's is one of them. I've had their catered food on a couple of occasions and everything....I mean EVERYTHING I've tried from them has been fresh, flavorful, and fantastic! Their cookies are locally famous and to die for. You can even order them online to ship directly to you! They are not exactly cheap, but trust me - you will not care when you try them. Best cookies ever - and this coming from a non-sweet tooth kind of girl. They also now have a lunch counter downtown which is amazing, although kind of pricey. Totally worth it though. I used to stop here to pick up lunch when I felt like treating myself. Potato salad is great, as is everything else. Yum yum yum! Try Rennie's and I promise you won't regret it. Seriously. At least GET THE COOKIES!

We've come a long way from the era where Dave and Buster's was an exotic experience. These days,…read morethe barcade is a staple of cities and college towns, and this trend saved the American arcade from what seemed like certain death. They're usually dependable for a fun, lighthearted night out, but man oh man did Evansville get especially lucky with theirs. You'd be hard-pressed to find an establishment that takes better care of its pinball machines than High Score Saloon. They look sharp, play beautifully and run the gamut from blue-chip favorites like The Addams Family to quirkier machines like The X-Files. Beyond pinball, you'll spot barcade classics like Donkey Kong and Joust as well as some pleasant surprises, like a TV with Duck Hunt behind the bar. (Can't get too up-close and cheat, now!) High Score Saloon is on the compact side and could be overlooked by passersby due to its lower-level location. They get a lot of mileage out of this space, though. The decor is great and I really dig how their atmosphere is nocturnal and comfortable in equal measure. Some additional taps would be nice, but as it stands, they do a solid job selecting eclectic beers from Evansville and beyond. If you're lucky, there will even be a piece of chalk waiting for you in the bathroom so that you can write on the chalkboard walls. ("R.I.P. SIR BEEF" is a personal go-to for this.) If I still lived in Evansville, this would be my primary bar. As it stands, it's one of my most anticipated stops whenever I'm in town. Press the START button on this joint - you won't regret it.

Free video games and craft beers on draft. What more can you ask for? (Pinball machines and prize…read moregames are extra of course. )

Children's Museum of Evansville

We spent about $90 to visit Children's Museum of Evansville and it honestly felt like a complete…read morewaste of time and money. So many exhibits were broken or not working that my 7-year-old was constantly running up to something, pressing buttons, and... nothing. The place could be really cool if everything actually functioned, but it just doesn't. On top of that, there were employees cleaning in the "Rainbow Bistro" area for almost an hour, so she couldn't even play in there the entire time we were on that floor. For a children's museum that charges this much, I expected working exhibits and more consideration for the kids who are there to play. I really hope they put more effort into maintaining and fixing the exhibits instead of letting everything fall into disrepair. We won't be back unless things improve.

So I wanted to be optimistic, because I fully support educational places of play. But this place…read morewas straight up disappointing. We paid $60 for a family of 5. There are three levels in the museum with 10+ exhibits. Hardly any of them were fully functional. There was a graffiti wall in "fantastic plastic" exhibit that had 3 dry erase markers. 2 were dried up. So one marker was being shared by 4 kids. There was a Mark Twain bust that was supposed to record a small story, based on several words that you could choose, and then play it back to you. The record function did not work. My kids were excited about the quack factory exhibit, with rubber duckies/balls you would launch down tubes to a wet deck below. Nothing in the 2nd floor floor extension of this exhibit was working. They couldn't use it. We went to the ground level of the exhibit, the wet deck - but down there, the hot air balloon exhibit, which used heat to make a model hot air balloon rise, was non-functional. The portion that makes water vapor was non-functional. On the second floor, there is an "art maker" room with 3-D printers, like 6 of them. Only 2 were functional. The employee there was very apologetic and kind, but it was just one more thing. The 5th street theater portion on the second floor wasn't functioning properly. There is also a balance challenge on the second floor that is broken. There are some "piano stairs" coming down from second level to first that are out. The vending machine in the lobby was broken. The place was pretty clean, and not very crowded, which was nice- but I was honestly very sadly surprised. The cost of this experience just isn't justified. We won't be back.
