Franklin Hills Memory Gardens - These are the flags that caught my eye while driving past. Beautiful at sunset, looking west.

What caught my eye was a beautiful display of several United States flags placed at a central traffic rotator (circle)/cul de sac on the property. I wanted to take a longer look, as the sun was setting - it was really a beautiful sight. Of note, the paved alleyways within this memory garden were of ample width. I noted that the property seemed to be fairly well-maintained. I also noted that the headstones were flat at ground level. Probably designed this way for economy and ease of property care. Don't know much about it really, but seemed like a nice, quiet peaceful place for a cemetery.

Nobody was helpful in office and they said the plots my parents were sold were purchased 2 years prior. We had Or Woodyard (who was wonderful) take Dad back to funeral home and was in office tiring to fix problem. Our family missed the meal and closure with many people. The staff at Franklin Hills were very unprofessional and rude. Their records were a mess. No updated files in a computer and who knows who sold my parents the wrong plots. It took my son (DR. Ryan Whitt ) to figure out were there were plots closer to our family. We had to have OR Woodyard bring Dad back the next morning and put him in a grave by my grandparents and close to their daughter. The only sympathetic people at Franklin Hills were the nice men who dug up the grave. They were polite and very helpful. If you have plots at this circus .....CHECK WHERE THEY ARE.... I also heard that this place has gone bankrupt many times. Go figure

Doctors had indicated my father would pass that day. Family had come from out of town to spend final days with him but had to leave on Tuesday so we wanted the funeral on Monday. Spence director told us it would be "tight" but did not say they could not do it. Told us to inform hospital to transfer my father to their care upon his death. He passed Saturday evening and they took him to the home. 1 star is that Spence did not charge for the pick up - read on. Due to family and religious reasons we did not want a viewing, we dressed our father for burial, and we had a church service where we did everything under the direction of our Bishop. We received two calls from Spence on Sunday morning asking us to come in to sign contract. Estimated price was greater than $6000. We arrived at noon and they informed us they had booked two other services Monday and would not be able to assist us until Tuesday. There policy was not to start anything until actual death occurred. Between noon and Sat evening they had booked another Monday service. We had no issue with the policy but asked why they had not called immediately to inform us giving us more time to find another service provider. We asked for a referal as we were now less than a day away. "We do not give referrals" was the response. They wanted us to change the funeral date. In retrospect Spence did us a favor because we went with Day-Manofsky Funeral Service who charged us $2378 (over $3000 savings from Spence). Rick Day also put it together in less than 24 hours so our family could all attend the funeral and burial of our father. (I do give referals.) Bottom line - choose an alternative to Spence.

But the…read morefolks at Frank E Smith stepped in with kindness and care that it honestly felt like they were part of our family. They listened to our stories, her love of family, her sense of humor, her strength, and even of her horrible driving. They helped us create a service and an amazing! obit online that truly reflected her life. We knew they knew what they were doing. Everything was just right. At the graveside, they arranged the military honors for mom as she was in the Air Force which was big in her life, started with military, then the priest, and then even had a bagpiper at the end which didn't leave a dry eye. I can't even describe how moving that was. Seeing the flag folded with such respect by some military guys brought a lot of emotions, but the bagpiper at the end, it was something. None of us will ever forget it. Everyone there treated us with so much compassion and patience. They handled all the details even some quick last minute requests for visitation, thanks sound person! We didn't have to worry about anything, and that meant the world to us. We didn't know the local Catholic Priest, but Smith's helped helped us arrange a funeral mass at St Mary's which was just beautiful and we know she was looking down at us. You could tell this isn't just a job that they do it from the heart. We'll always be grateful for how they cared for Mom and for us. In a hard time, they made things feel a little lighter, a little more peaceful and didn't seem like the typical stereotype of a funeral director I have I guess. If you ever find yourself needing their services, I can promise you'll be in the best of hands.
